The development of IoT technology has enabled various sensors to be integrated into mobile devices. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) based on sensor data has become an important part of the field of machine learning and ubiquitous computing. However, human activities are not evenly distributed because of the rarely performed activities. The dataset is extremely imbalanced. In this paper, we propose Balancing sensor Data Generative Adversarial Networks (BSDGAN) to generate sensor data for rarely performed human activities. To address extreme imbalances in human activity dataset, an autoencoder is employed to initialize the training process of BSDGAN, which to ensure the data features of each activity can be learned. Add the generated activity data to the original data to generate a new dataset that increases the proportion of rarely performed human activities, which makes the dataset balanced. We deployed multiple human activity recognition models on two publicly available imbalanced human activity datasets, WISDM and UNIMIB. Experimental results show that the proposed BSDGAN can effectively capture the data features of real human activity sensor data, and generate realistic synthetic sensor data. Meanwhile, the balanced activity dataset is effective for the activity recognition model to improve the recognition accuracy.

distributed Data Fusion (DDF), as a prevalent technique that empowers scalable, flexible, and robust information fusing, has been employed in various multi-sensor networks operating in uncertain and dynamic environments. This paper proposes a cognition difference-based mechanism to construct a dynamic trust network for real-time DDF, where the cognition difference is defined as the statistical difference between the sensors' estimated probability distributions. Distinguished by the mutual correlation between trust and cognition difference, two principles of determining trust are investigated, and their performances are analyzed by conducting simulations in the scenarios of source seeking. Our simulation and experiment results show that the proposed approach is effective in providing comprehensive and robust performance in general and unstructured environments.

While distributed multi-cell resource allocation (D-MCRA) is promising for improving the spectral efficiency of cellular systems, it is challenging to realize in practice due to the large overhead for exchanging the channel state information (CSI) between base stations (BSs) and limited backhaul bandwidth. Inspired by the emerging integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique for mmWave systems, we propose in this paper a new distributed user scheduling and beamforming framework with a small signaling overhead. Specifically, we employ the ISAC signal for the BSs to track the kinematic parameters of the served users, which not only can be used to estimate the line-of-sight (LoS) CSI of served users but also can be exchanged with other BSs to construct cross-cell CSI. Based on this, we propose an enhanced proportional fairness zero-forcing greedy (PFZFG) scheduler for BSs to determine the set of users for ISAC signal transmission distributively. Afterward, each BS optimizes the ISAC beamformers based on a signal-to-average-leakage-plus-interference-plus-noise ratio (SALINR) criterion and subject to sensing error constraints. Simulation results show that our proposed design can approach the performance of the centralized algorithm.

Edge computing has evolved as a decentralised technology for processing data closer to its source, thus reducing latency and improving bandwidth utilisation. However, this shift also introduces new security challenges, particularly distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. As there are numerous components associated with the edge computing environment, the effect of an attack on one component can be cascaded to other components which can severely disrupt the application execution. To handle that, this paper presents DEFID, a framework for DDoS attack detection and filtering in the edge computing environment. Defid utilises Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) to detect and filter the DDoS attack. Since eBPF allows efficient execution of custom monitoring and filtering programs executing directly within the Linux kernel, it provides a lightweight, high-performance and flexible framework for real-Time network traffic analysis. The effectiveness of Defid is analysed using three separate attack programs, Goldeneye, SlowLoris and Tor's Hammer Attack in a test environment which shows that the proposed solution is able to accurately detect and filter various types of DDoS attack traffic with minimal overhead. © 2024 ieee.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used in a variety of applications, such as industrial control systems, environmental monitoring, military applications, and structural health monitoring. Energy consumption is a key factor in the lifespan of a WSN, as all sensor nodes are energy-constrained devices. In order to improve energy efficiency, various routing protocols have been developed. These protocols aim to establish paths between sensor nodes and a data sink, while also maximizing the lifespan of the network. However, designing such protocols can be challenging due to the resource and power constraints, as well as the harsh conditions in which sensor nodes often operate. In this paper, a novel approach is proposed for improving energy efficiency in WSNs through the use of a distributed clustering-based data aggregation (DCDA) algorithm. In this approach, we use a grid structure as the basis for clustering, with each cluster having a designated cluster head (CH). Rather than transmitting data directly to the base station (BS), sensor nodes (SNs) send their data to their cluster head, which then aggregates and transmits the data to the BS. This approach can extend the network lifetime by reducing the energy required for communication between SNs. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the DCDA algorithm in a grid-based WSN. The results showed that using the specified parameters for clustering in the protocol significantly reduces the overall energy consumption of the entire network. © 2024 The Author(s).

Fiber optic sensors have been widely used in various biomedical applications due to their high sensitivity, reliability, and non-invasiveness. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to designing an optical sensor for detecting impurities in a mixture. The proposed sensor utilizes a flexible polymer layer and an optical fiber cable to detect variations in the power of the adulterated mixture. The polymer layer is made of PDMS, which swells or shrinks in response to the level of adulteration present in the mixture. As a result, the intensity of the output spectra changes, which can be used to detect impurities. The sensor's results will be compared with those obtained from the pure mixture to evaluate its accuracy. In conclusion, the proposed sensor has several advantages, such as low cost, easy to handle, ease of fabrication, and high sensitivity, making it a promising candidate for detecting impurities in various mixtures. © 2023 ieee.

The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) results in tremendous interest in research for low-power wireless sensors. The energy harvesting (EH) ability of IoT sensors determines the efficiency and reliability of network connectivity inside IoT. This work considers a wireless sensor network (WSN) where a fusion center (FC) gathers data packets from EH sensors which can store energy without battery overflow or leakage. The FC selects a subset of nodes per time slot to gather data from them under stochastic data arrival processes via its mutually orthogonal channels. EH processes and battery states of sensors are unknown to FC. Similarly, data arrival (DA) processes and buffer states of sensors are unknown to FC, which only knows previous transmission results. We aim to propose a simple, efficient policy that maximizes network throughput and fairness in IoT network systems, which is very important, especially for 5G and next-generation networks. Data transmission relies on not only scheduled nodes' gathered energy but also their buffered data. If it has data to send and sufficient energy for transmission, a node can transmit data when scheduled. This paper proposes a low-complexity algorithm that is almost throughput and fairness optimal for quite general EH and DA processes over finite time horizons. We show that by removing the battery capacity limit, the proposed approach yields asymptotically optimal throughput and fairness for general EH and DA processes over an infinite time horizon. It achieves nearly optimality in throughput and fairness across finite time horizons with finite-capacity batteries, according to numerical simulations whereas existing solutions become suboptimal. © 2024 ieee.

The ongoing energy transition increasingly relies on a resilient communication infrastructure for monitoring, controlling, and optimizing the performance of energy distribution. In energy distribution systems, this is nowadays realized by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) networks, which communicate sensor data and commands to the actuators. As also witnessed in other application areas, an integrated communication infrastructure can leverage cyber attacks. While recent advances in Intrusion Detection systems (IDS) specifically designed for SCADA networks in energy distribution enable the detection of certain domain-specific attacks, they assume the existence of a secure and dependable communication channel and a central entity responsible for coordination. Addressing the mentioned requirements, we propose a resilient decentralized communication architecture for an IDS that operates next to the SCADA communication and uses rumor-spreading algorithms to mitigate central coordination. We discuss essential steps to transition an existing prototype into a real-world application, ensuring security in the evolving smart grid landscape. We showcase the functionality of the robust communication infrastructure using a distributed Raspberry Pi cluster and multiple evaluation scenarios.

The scarcity of energy resources and computational capabilities poses significant challenges for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) when tasked with executing time-sensitive and complex demands, such as those necessary for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled applications. Integrating Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) in Ground-Air Cooperative systems offers a promising solution by providing additional computational and storage capacities near the point of need. However, these systems' distributed, dynamic, and resource-constrained nature presents a critical challenge for efficient task scheduling. This study introduces a novel two-tiered distributed online task scheduling approach aimed at optimizing the resource utilization of UGVs in edge computing environments. Our methodology encompasses two algorithms: a task dispatching algorithm designed to identify a UGV server that meets the deadline requirements while minimizing energy consumption and a computing scheduling algorithm that employs the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) strategy to refine the sequence in which tasks are processed, thereby reducing the average task completion time. We thoroughly assess the performance of the suggested algorithm with state-of-the-art methods using the OMNeT++ network simulator. The outcomes indicate that the proposed method significantly reduces the average task latency and energy consumption while meeting task deadline requirements.
