This paper reports a multi-band surface-enhanced molecular detection technique induced by bright-dark coupling in the mid-IR fingerprint region. Our device enables the excitation of four plasmonic resonances (3 mu m, 5.6 mu m, 6.9 mu m, and 7.4 mu m) covering an ultra-wide spectral range, which paves the way to molecule recognition from the whole IR fingerprint region. The multi-band plasmonic sensor with ultra-wide continuous resonance spectra can be used for a wide range of infrared molecular sensing applications with enhanced detection resolution and sensitivity.

Inertial sensor data collected from wearable smart devices such as smartwatches are expected to be used in various smart applications such as video game controllers, hand drawing, hand writing, gestural input devices, human activity recognition, and remote communication using sign language. However, since the maximum sampling rate of inertial sensors in commercial smartwatches is restricted, capturing fine-grained body movements using the low-sampled signals is difficult for these sensors. Therefore, this study proposes a new method for generating high sampling rate signals from the low-sampled signals by upsampling the low-sampled signals using interpolation with an artificial neural network. Because it is impossible to obtain "non-existent" data from low-sampled signals according to the information theory, we estimate these data from experience, i.e., using high-sampled signals prepared in advance for training. This is possible because trajectories of a sensor are restricted by the skeletal structure of the body part to which the sensor is attached.

A number of sensor network applications are envisioned to be applied to industry settings where the existence of mobile nodes (MN) is required. In critical applications, the real-time monitoring of a MN must always be available, something that requires the existence of a suitable mobility protocol to control the handoff procedure. In this paper, we use an industrial WSN setting to perform a comprehensive performance evaluation of different mobility handling solutions based on single- and multiple-metric options. The results show that Fuzzy Logic-based Mobility Controller (FLMC), the multiple-metric approach we used (based on Fuzzy Logic), performs better compared to any single metric-based approach under a varying set of conditions. More specifically, we demonstrate that the Fuzzy Logic -based approach can efficiently control the handoff triggering procedure and provide high reliability (low packet loss) under different mobility models, different radio propagation models, and different topologies.

distributed smart sensors are more and more used in applications such as biomedical or domestic monitoring. However, each sensor broadcasts data wirelessly to the others or to an aggregator, which leads to energy-hungry sensor nodes not ensuring data privacy. To tackle both challenges, this work proposes to distribute the feature extraction and a part of a clique-based neural network (CBNN) in each sensor node. This scheme allows standardizing data at the sensor level, ensuring privacy if the data is intercepted. Besides, a lower number of bits is transmitted, thus limiting the communication overhead. The inherent redundancy of clique-based networks makes them resilient to out-of-range connections, allowing an additional power reduction in the sensor nodes. Compared with a localized CBNN in the aggregator, the distributed structure reduces the inference latency by 28%, the sensor energy consumption by 25% and increases the protocol robustness. The circuit implementation is possible with the use of single-cluster iterative clique-based circuits, and demonstrated for a posture recognition application. To this end, a hardware circuit has been fabricated and performs a classification using 115fJ per synaptic event per neuron in 83ns.
