The paper proposes a light-weight blockchain (BC)-envisioned scheme HeaL, that ensures secure and trusted exchange of electronic health records (EHR) over open wireless channels, with minimum encryption and signing overheads. HeaL operates in two phases. In the first phase, proximity sensor nodes (PSN) are mounted over the patient to form a wireless body area network (WBAN). The nodes elect a cluster-head (CH) in its vicinity based on resource capability to forward data to gateway sensor nodes (GSN) in WBAN, with EHR meta-information recorded in BC. Then, in the second phase, GSN executes a lightweight signcryption scheme that combines encryption and signing of data among authorized stakeholders. The data is exchanged over open channels and is accessible to authorized personals by fetching secure keys from Inter-planetary file systems (IPFS). The mined information is finally stored as block ledgers in global chain structures to reduce computational overheads. The proposed scheme HeaL is compared against existing schemes in terms of parameters like transaction and signing cost, transactional throughput, and computational and communication costs. In simulation, HeaL achieves an average signing cost and verifying cost of 3.32 seconds (s) and 6.52 s, respectively. For 200 blocks, the mining latency is 3.325 s, compared to traditional schemes with a latency of 7.8 s. The obtained transactional throughput is 142.78 Mbps, compared to traditional 102.45 Mbps. In security evaluation, the computation cost (CC) is 45.80 milli-seconds (ms), and communication cost (CCM) is 97 bytes, which indicates the viability of the proposed scheme against other state-of-the-art approaches. © 2020 ieee.

Since their appearance, Smart Cities have aimed at improving the daily life of people, helping to make public services smarter and more efficient. Several of these services are often intended to provide better security conditions for citizens and drivers. In this vein, we present Heimdall, an AI-based video surveillance system for traffic monitoring and anomalies detection. The proposed system features three main tiers: a ground level, consisting of a set of smart lampposts equipped with cameras and sensors, and an advanced AI unit for detecting accidents and traffic anomalies in real time; a territorial level, which integrates and combines the information collected from the different lampposts, and cross-correlates it with external data sources, in order to coordinate and handle warnings and alerts; a training level, in charge of continuously improving the accuracy of the modules that have to sense the environment. Finally, we propose and discuss an early experimental approach for the detection of anomalies, based on a Faster R-CNN, and adopted in the proposed infrastructure.

In the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) scenarios, it is challenging to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) due to the high mobility of the communication channels, which leads to considerable pilot overhead. To tackle this issue, we employ both integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technique and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technique to reduce the pilot overhead significantly while maximizing the achievable rate. In particular, we consider a RIS-assisted ISAC system serving the vehicle and design a transmission protocol based on communication-sensing-computing integration architecture for the proposed system, where the ISAC base station (BS) and the dedicated sensors deployed at the RIS receive the reflected echo signals from the user equipment (UE) via the BS-UE-BS link and the BS-UE-sensors link, respectively. Then the CSI of the UE can be acquired from the received signals. Furthermore, to provide both high-quality and low-latency communication services, we propose a covariance-based angle prediction neural network (CAP-Net) to predict the angle parameters facilitating the joint transmit and reflective beamforming design for the next time slot. Simulation results show that the proposed RIS-assisted ISAC system with the CAP-Net achieves better communication performance compared with other baseline schemes and can approach the upper bound in terms of achievable rate.

Dorsiflexion of the ankle serves a critical role for the functionality of gait with regards to both the swing phase and stance phase. Hemiparesis can adversely influence the ability to conduct dorsiflexion of the ankle. Inertial sensor systems have been successfully demonstrated for objectively quantifying the disparity of a hemiplegic limb pair, which can be readily visualized. The gyroscope signal provides a kinematic representation that is clinically recognizable. These achievements to visualize through inertial sensors and distinguish by machine learning classification constitute an advance for the progressive rehabilitation for the ability to dorsiflex a hemiplegic affected ankle relative to the unaffected ankle. Conformal wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems that are inherently flexible can be readily be mounted about the dorsum of the ankle for quantifying dorsiflexion of the ankle based on the gyroscope signal. Wireless access to Cloud computing enables a convenient and remote means for signal data storage. The signal data can be consolidated to a feature set for machine learning classification to distinguish between a hemiplegic affected ankle and unaffected ankle pair. Using a multilayer perceptron neural network considerable machine learning classification accuracy is attained for distinguishing between dorsiflexion for a hemiplegic affected ankle and unaffected ankle. The amalgamation of conformal wearables, Cloud computing access, and machine learning imply the opportunity to conduct at home therapy with highly augmented clinical acuity for an optimal rehabilitation experience.

Underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has received widespread attention recently due to its advantages in terms of high bandwidth, low power consumption and low delay. However, unlike underwater acoustic communication systems, the underwater wireless optical communication system is limited by its short communication range. In order to enlarge its application domain, it requires relaying and routing technology to achieve long-distance high bandwidth reliable transmissions (e.g., real-time video streaming). Although pre-deploying large number of sensor nodes is one of the possible solutions, this is impractical in response to emergency events such as oil pipeline leakage and shipwreck recovery. To this end, in this paper, we leverage swarms of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to build underwater optical communication links to transfer real-time video streaming. We first model the optical transmission channel considering solar noise, and then calculate both the optical communication angle and the reliable communicating range that satisfy a pre-defined bit error rate (BER). We then formulate the deployment optimization problem while targeting on minimizing both deployment energy consumption and delay. We also take positioning errors of AUVs into account to guarantee reliable communications. We provide an energy efficient algorithm to solve the formulated deployment problem. Through extensive simulations, we show that the algorithm effectively improves the deployment performance and achieves reliable communications.

Nowadays, safety-critical systems are becoming more prominent with the increase in reliance on technology in households. With this dependency, reliability and reaction time needs to be improved on to maintain a high standard of service. However, current designs are stagnant and only implementing rote and obsolete open-loop designs as a means of easy manufacturing and for simplicity in design but does not fully provide safety to its users since open-loop designs rely on the user's interaction to initiate the safety process or mitigation. This is too variable and unreliable and delays the process which the user will incur more damages in the end degrading the effectiveness of a safety-critical system. This study aims to addresses these issues by designing a system that implements a closed-loop feedback using values collected from sensors to survey the condition of the surroundings and respond accordingly with different fog computing methodologies and utilizing a feedback loop. This alternative closed-loop implementation will be 40% more reliable than the open-loop version, 71% reduced latency, and have a faster overall response time compared to commercial systems based on the experimental results. All designs, workflows, and ideas discussed in this paper will be implemented all in an Arduino Environment.

We propose a federated edge-computing architecture for management of data. Our vision is to enable a service provider model for "data-services", where a user can enter into economic agreements with an infrastructure maintainer to provide storage and communication of data, without necessarily trusting the infrastructure provider. Toward this vision, we present cryptographically hardened cohesive collections of data items called DataCapsules, and an overview of the underlying federated architecture, called Global Data Plane.

More and more researchers are working on improving the sensor nodes' energy efficiency owing to rise in the number of Wireless sensor Networks' applications in various fields like military, space, healthcare, climate and agriculture. sensor nodes are deployed in harsh and unapproachable environments with uncertain external conditions. Due to these reasons, it is even more important to improve the energy efficiency and thereby, network lifetime of sensors. In these unpredictable conditions, Fuzzy Logic systems work very well in handling uncertainties in an efficient manner. An attempt is made to implement a joint optimal clustering and routing solution using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic as well as Bacterial Foraging Optimization. In our proposed work, we try to design and implement an efficient cluster head selection algorithm using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic system and then use BFO routing algorithm to find optimal path for sending aggregated data to the BS. Our proposed approach will address the issues related hot-spot problem in the network by reducing the over heads in the formation of cluster, and helps in reducing the consumption of energy thereby prolonging the Network Life Time. We compared the implemented solution with LEACH protocol and achieved better network life time, increased residual energy and lower packet delivery loss. © 2020 ieee.

Based on our research, cloud computing may not be for many of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Fog computing makes available the cloud computing paradigm by taking up the gap between centralized data servers and various geographically distributed applications. It functions by deploying fog nodes throughout the Internet. In addition, WSNs are the core of any Internet of Things applications as well as they are emergent networks in many of the real-time applications. Therefore, energy is the most critical issue of WSNs, In this paper, we propose an energy efficient framework for fog computing based on multi-sink WSNs (FOGSink). We believe that selecting the best sink node(s) on the border of the fog network will save the overall energy for many of the applications. Four criteria are used for multi-sink selections which are distance from the fog network nodes, nodes degree, nodes energy, and nodes processing capabilities. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed framework. © 2020 ieee.

Estuarine aquaculture in the coastal belt plays a key role in food security, production and supply chain. In the current COVID scenario, an efficient, sustainable and contactless system is the need of the hour, to keep up with the rising demands for food. Estuarine aquaculture involves culturing of fish species in a controlled environment so as to meet the increased demands. This requires continuous monitoring of the controlled environment which results in a labor-intensive proposition at the site. To simplify the task of the aquaculture farmers, the proposed solution named as ‘Estuarine-Star’ ensures that the entire site of aquaculture is maintained autonomously without the presence of the farmer at the site. The system comprises of 5 underwater sensors connected in the form of a star placed at strategic points in the site. These strategically placed underwater sensors sense the environmental parameters and through edge computing take appropriate actions to maintain an optimal environment. The data is also stored on the cloud. Furthermore, a camera system captures the underwater view of the fishes to study and understand the behavior of the fishes. This will help in taking targeted actions when abnormality in parameters is detected. The system ensures optimal conditions for rearing of fish thereby providing sustainable and profitable growth for the farmers. The interactive application hosted on cloud makes use of real time parameters and live video for alert generation and recommendations.
