Solving the system of linear algebraic equations (LAE) is the most well known and probably the most important of all numerical computations involving real numbers. Researchers have been committed to developing distributed algorithms to solve such systems for a long time. However, traditional distributed algorithms have serious security risks when the coefficients and the solution are of great value. To address the privacy issue, we propose a new secure distributed outsourcing protocol for solving large-scale LAE systems. Specifically, we give an algorithm for generating a generic repeatedly jointly strongly connected sequence, for the first time as far as we know. Then we embed the matrix masking technique in our distributed system requiring multiple rounds of iteration while keeping the correctness of convergence. In addition, for the first time, we give a method for discriminating by the agents under masking whether the plaintext approximate solution corresponding to the current masked solution satisfies a predetermined constraint. Finally, we give the experimental result to show the practicality of our new protocol.

Offloading software modules to the edge/cloud can enhance a robot's capabilities by leveraging massive computing power. However, determining which software module should be offloaded and scheduled to which robot/edge/cloud node is a challenging task, particularly for robot fleets with diverse tasks. In this paper, we tackle the software scheduling problem and introduce a taxonomy to categorize software modules and classify their applicability and requirements for offloading. Additionally, by using prior measurements, we model the compute cluster and formalize software scheduling as a multi-objective optimization problem which we tackle with a genetic algorithm. To evaluate our approach with a challenging setup, we build a mobile manipulation task using open-source frameworks and libraries in the Robot Operating System (ROS2) community in simulation as well as a mildly simplified real-world variant. Our evaluation shows significant improvements compared to the built-in scheduler of Kubernetes (K8s) regarding robotic specific metrics such as the rate of missed cycle time in both simulated and real-world experiments.

Ultra-dense mobile edge computing (MEC) is expected as an effective approach to provide services with ultra-low latency and massive connectivity, which is extremely important for delay-sensitive applications. In this paper, we study service instance (SI) placement for delay-sensitive applications in ultra-dense MEC, which decides where to place applications and the required data (programming codes and datasets). In general, the SI placement problem is a combinatorial optimization and usually does not have low-complexity optimal solutions. Existing centralized policies are difficult to implement due to the high complexity, especially when edge servers are densely deployed in the ultra-dense network (UDN). To design an approach that can make SI placement decisions quickly and efficiently, this paper investigates a distributed strategy for multi-user multi-server edge systems in UDN. We first formulate the SI placement problem as a non-linear combinatorial optimization, which is proven to be NP-hard to compute a centralized optimal solution. Then, we propose an uncooperative game to design a low-complexity distributed algorithm. We further analyze the properties of the game and prove the existence of pure strategy Nash Equilibrium. A polynomial-complexity distributed algorithm is proposed to get the Nash Equilibrium. Theoretical analysis shows the algorithm's convergence and the bound of the price of anarchy (PoA), which serves as a performance guarantee in the worst-case scenarios compared to the global optimum. Numerical results validate the convergence and near-optimal performance of the proposed distributed algorithm. © 2021 ieee.

We consider the problem of cost-effectively mapping a swarm of soft real-time stream processing applications with moldable-parallel tasks to multicore resources in the device-edge-cloud continuum, consisting of mobile devices, edge resources and cloud resources. We leverage flexibility from different parallelization degrees and frequency levels (DVFS) for the tasks, keeping application throughput constraints and communication bandwidth limitations while minimizing overall cost (including device/edge resource energy and cloud resource renting). We present two offline algorithmic solutions with a global view of the environment: an integer linear program (ILP) extending the crown scheduling approach for multi-layer distributed systems and a greedy heuristic algorithm. Our experimental evaluation for several real-world and synthetic scenarios shows that the time required for solving the scheduling problem to cost-optimality by the ILP is feasible for nontrivial scenarios. The heuristic achieves about 12% worse cost efficiency on average, yet operates much faster (by 1-2 orders of magnitude), allowing to scale up the problem size more than the ILP approach.

Randomized fault-tolerant consensus protocols with common coins are widely used in cloud computing and blockchain platforms. Due to their fundamental role, it is vital to guarantee their correctness. Threshold automata is a formal model designed for the verification of fault-tolerant consensus protocols. It has recently been extended to probabilistic threshold automata (PTAs) to verify randomized fault-tolerant consensus protocols. Nevertheless, PTA can only model randomized consensus protocols with local coins. In this work, we extend PTA to verify randomized fault-tolerant consensus protocols with common coins. Our main idea is to add a process to simulate the common coin (the so-called common-coin process). Although the addition of the common-coin process destroys the symmetry and poses technical challenges, we show how PTA can be adapted to overcome the challenges. We apply our approach to verify the agreement, validity and almost-sure termination properties of 8 randomized consensus protocols with common coins.

The growing demand for intelligent environments unleashes an extraordinary cycle of privacy-aware applications that makes individuals' life more comfortable and safe. Examples of these applications include pedestrian tracking systems in large areas. Although the ubiquity of camera-based systems, they are not a preferable solution due to the vulnerability of leaking the privacy of pedestrians. In this paper, we introduce a novel privacy-preserving system for pedestrian tracking in smart environments using multiple distributed LiDARs of non-overlapping views. The system is designed to leverage LiDAR devices to track pedestrians in partially covered areas due to practical constraints, e.g., occlusion or cost. Therefore, the system uses the point cloud captured by different LiDARs to extract discriminative features that are used to train a metric learning model for pedestrian matching purposes. To boost the system's robustness, we leverage a probabilistic approach to model and adapt the dynamic mobility patterns of individuals and thus connect their sub-trajectories. We deployed the system in a largescale testbed with 70 colorless LiDARs and conducted three different experiments. The evaluation result at the entrance hall confirms the system's ability to accurately track the pedestrians with a 0.98 F-measure even with zero-covered areas. This result highlights the promise of the proposed system as the next generation of privacy-preserving tracking means in smart environments.

The rapid development of various autonomous unmanned systems has increased the endogenous intelligence of machines, which empowers functional collaborations among intelligent machines. However, traditional protocols for intelligent machine collaboration have limitations regarding functionality, efficiency, and scalability. Moreover, existing research on intelligent machine collaboration is not yet approaching a unified paradigm that facilitates interactions among machines and between machines and humans. Therefore, aiming to enable a more efficient functional collaboration among intelligent machines, we propose a natural language-based instruction (NLI) protocol, which enjoys the advantages of autonomy, robustness and efficiency. In particular, we specify the NLI protocol architecture by introducing a corpus of NLIs, an NLI generation module, and an NLI parsing module, wherein the corpus contains control instructions, intents and slots, the generation module is used to generate NLIs, and the parsing module is used to parse the intents and slots in the instruction. Furthermore, we case-study the proposed NLI protocol in an electromagnetic interference avoidance scenario based on semi-physical simulation with software-defined radio. Simulation results show that the NLI protocol is more robust and efficient than traditional control protocol in severe wireless channels, which validates the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing intelligent machine collaboration based on NLI.

This article presents the results of the research aimed at determining the influence of photovoltaic distributed microgeneration, with load profile variation on energy efficiency in residential supplies with BT5B tariff and consumption over 100kWh/month in the district of EI Tambo, province of Huancayo, Peru;the population consisted of all residential supplies of the district in question, the sample was a typical residential supply selected using non-probabilistic sampling by convenience because the research was conducted as an experimental type. The design and simulation of the results was carried out with the software 'Perfilcargafv', which was developed in Matlab;by means of this application and from the load profile of each supply, different profitable configurations of generation systems connected to the network can be obtained, analyzing each of the variables of the research. The results showed that the electrical energy consumed from the commercial network is considerably reduced, as well as the monthly billing, greenhouse gas emissions and energy losses;this allows concluding that the energy efficiency of residential supplies was significantly improved. © 2024 ieee.

Mobile sensor networks can be realised using robot swarms where simple robots interact only locally to achieve swarm scalability and robustness. One of the main challenges is to develop suitable sensor fusion methods, both for autonomous swarms and human supervisory control, without gravely reducing the benefits of decentralisation. Hence, we introduce the Self-organising Hierarchical Extending (SHE) approach for distributed sensor fusion in robot swarms under communication and control constraints found in harsh, heterogeneous, and dynamic environments. The SHE approach is designed for fast autonomous swarm control in local environments, radially extending the sensor-effector range of a central node for global autonomous or human supervisory control. We discuss possible approaches to distributed object search and a SHE fusion architecture. An exemplary simulation based on the virtual pheromone approach provides a proof of concept for a self-organised, hierarchical, and extending fusion topology with a minimal robot controller. © 2023 ieee.

As our reliance on micro autonomous vehicles increases, security vulnerabilities and software defects threaten the successful completion of tasks and missions. Recent work has developed end-to-end toolchains that provide trusted and resilient operation in the face of defects and attacks. These toolchains enable automatically repairing (and patching) the control software in the event of a failure. Existing techniques force the subject control software to terminate and the vehicle to be motionless, making the restart or post-repair deployment more complex and slow. The challenge remains to ensure that vehicle control software can recover from attacks and defects quickly and safely, even while the target vehicle remains in motion. This paper presents a technique for faster, simpler, and seamless hardware switchover that operates while the vehicle is in motion. The key contribution is the ability to restart the control software post-repair while the vehicle is in motion by transplanting sensor data between onboard control computers to bypass a costly portion of initialization. Although existing checkpoint and restore methods allow software to recover execution at a known-functional state, they are not lightweight enough to support recovery during mission execution. Instead, our approach transplants known-good sensor data from a trusted, isolated execution environment in the onboard computing hardware. Our evaluation successfully reproduces prior simulation results in hardware. Further, sensor transplantation allows for successful initialization while in motion, reduces time-to-ready by 40%, and is robust to variances in sensor readings.
