This paper presents a cost-efficient retrofit strategy for the digitalization of low voltage grids, leveraging the advancements of Industry 4.0 technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing. Facing the challenges of traditional grid management systems, like scalability, data processing, cybersecurity, and integration of renewable energies, this strategy proposes a practical solution to enhance grid observability. By implementing this approach in a local grid station and two cable distributors, we illustrate the potential for significant improvements in grid management, including real-time monitoring of power consumption and energy feedback. The findings underscore the transformative impact of digital technologies on the energy sector, offering insights into the future of grid management and the integration of renewable energy sources. This study contributes to the evolving discourse on grid digitalization, providing a framework for deploying IoT and edge computing in low voltage grids to achieve a more sustainable and efficient energy future. © 2024 ieee.

With the proliferation of miniaturized movement sensing capabilities, human activity recognition using wearables and other forms of pervasive sensing (HAR) has seen an enormous boost in both research and practical deployments. Prominent application domains are health assessments, wellbeing monitoring, and novel interaction paradigms. Arguably, and especially when compared to video based activity recognition, the use of movement sensors such as inertial measurement units has many practical advantages including mobility, more direct movement capturing, and less privacy invasive sensing. However, those advantages come with a cost with regards to the design of machine learning based pipelines for the analysis of the sensor data streams, i.e., multi-variate time series data. Probably the biggest challenge lies in the absence of (very) large, labeled datasets that can readily be used for developing and training complex analysis models. In this paper I explore the challenges for deriving machine learning based systems for sensor-based human activity recognition. My focus is on: i) the role of representation learning in modern HAR systems that overcome the need for explicit feature engineering;ii) self-supervised methods for most effective use of small, labeled datasets;and iii) cross-modality transfer. I conclude with an outlook of next steps in the field that promise to lead to increased robustness and more flexible applicability of contemporary, machine-learnlng based HAR systems. © 2023 ieee.

A distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to reduce normal traffic service, or network by spreading a target or its associated infrastructure with an internet traffic flood. The salient features of Cloud computing (CC) are being leveraged by attackers for launching severe DDoS attacks. However, DDoS attacks are very challenging to detect and mitigate the attacks accurately due to their distributed nature. This research proposes the Deep Convolutional Neural Network-based Support Vector Machine Activation Kernel (DCNN-based SVMAK) for detecting and mitigating DDoS attacks accurately using Deep Learning (DL). Initially, the CIC-DDoS2019 and Bot-IoT datasets are utilized to evaluate the proposed technique, and min-max normalization is employed for normalizing the obtained data. Then, the data imbalance issue will be overcome using the Weighted Optimized Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (WSMOTE). The Hybrid Golden-Seagull optimization (HGSO) is performed by changing sin into cos function for feature selection. The DCNN-based SVMAK is established for the detection and classification of DDoS attacks. If the attack is detected, the BAIT approach is used to mitigate the DDoS. The existing approaches like CNN-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-BiLSTM), AutoEncoder-Multi-layer Perceptron Network (AE-MLP), Wrapper Feature selection-based Hybrid DL (WF-HDL) are used to compare with the proposed approach. The proposed approach achieves better accuracy of 99.81% and 99.87% for CIC-DDoS2019 and Bot-IoT datasets compared to CNN-BiLSTM, AE-MLP, and WF-HDL respectively. © 2024 ieee.

Lasertrackers are used for tracking moving targets. Usually, interferometric distance measurement is used to determine the 3D coordinates of the target. In this paper, a tracker network is presented that uses triangulation only. The approach is more robust e.g. in case of beam interruption. But, triangulation requires at least two cooperating lasertrackers. Hence, the triangulation method is extended to a sensor network, that also improves robustness by redundance. Moreover, multiple targets can be tracked by an alternating lasertracker. By alternating, the requirements of the triangulation method are satisfied temporarily, thus the determination of the 3D target coordinates is possible. © 2023 ieee.

Multiply and Accumulate (MAC) units are widely used in digital signal processing. They are crucial for activities like correlation, convolution, and filtering, which allow for fast and effective signal processing. A fundamental component in modern digital signal processing systems, these scalable units serve as the foundation for a wide variety of DSP algorithms. The distributed arithmetic method, which offers reduced computational complexity while preserving accuracy through parallelism and distributed multiplication operations, is a highly effective way for creating Multiply and Accumulate (MAC) structures in digital signal processing. A scalable Multiply and Accumulate (MAC) architectures are shown in this article. Also, explored the design of multiply and accumulate structures at various bit-widths: 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64-bit versions, as well as analyzed LUT-based and LUT-less approaches. Significant variations in space and power consumption between LUT-based and LUT-less systems are highlighted by the data in the article for a variety of bit-width configurations. A quantitative examination shows that whereas LUT-less devices continue to have a smaller footprint and lower power consumption even on larger bit-widths, LUT-based solutions clearly consume large area and consumes more power as width of the bits expands. The proposed method is designed and simulated using Xilinx Vivado 2022.2 software. © 2024 ieee.

Variations in feeder impedances among distributed Generators (DGs) within a microgrid lead to inaccuracies in reactive power distribution. Additionally, significant fluctuations in load and diverse droop characteristics among DGs cause fluctuations in the inverter's voltage and frequency, thereby impacting both reactive and active power sharing. The generalized droop control strategy struggles to efficiently distribute both reactive and active power loads among the distributed generators. This paper introduces a decentralized enhanced droop-based control method aimed at improving the equitable distribution of both active and reactive power within an isolated micro grid utilizing inverters. The research then proceeds into enhancing droop control to achieve better optimization and incorporating additional mechanisms to distribute voltage, power, and frequency more effectively among different energy sources. A microgrid consisting of three DGs and three loads is simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and the proposed control strategy is validated through this simulation. The outcomes offer valuable understanding on addressing challenges related to voltage, power, and frequency imbalances, thereby improving the stability of Microgrids (MGs), and ensuring dependable operation of decentralized energy systems. © 2024 ieee.

The Automatic Dependant Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) message scheme was designed without any authentication or encryption of messages in place. It is therefore easily possible to attack it, e.g., by injecting spoofed messages or modifying the transmitted Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) coordinates. In order to verify the integrity of the received information, various methods have been suggested, such as multilateration, the use of Kalman filters, group certification, and many others. However, solutions based on modifications of the standard may be difficult and too slow to be implemented due to legal and regulatory issues. A vantage far less explored is the location verification using public sensor data. In this paper, we propose LoVe, a lightweight message verification approach that uses a geospatial indexing scheme to evaluate the trustworthiness of publicly deployed sensors and the ADS-B messages they receive. With LoVe, new messages can be evaluated with respect to the plausibility of their reported coordinates in a location privacy-preserving manner, while using a data-driven and lightweight approach. By testing our approach on two open datasets, we show that LoVe achieves very low false positive rates (between 0 and 0.001 06) and very low false negative rates (between 0.000 65 and 0.003 34) while providing a real-time compatible approach that scales well even with a large sensor set. Compared to currently existing approaches, LoVe neither requires a large number of sensors, nor for messages to be recorded by as many sensors as possible simultaneously in order to verify location claims. Furthermore, it can be directly applied to currently deployed systems thus being backward compatible.
