The goal of this paper is to review the first projects for building automatic computing machines during the first half of the 20th century. The presented timeline shows that 85 years ago - in October 1939 - the first breadboard proof-of-concept prototype of an electronic digital computer became operational. The credit for this revolutionary invention goes to John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State College. Using fresh insights and some nearly forgotten facts, we also review the origins of the ieee Computer Society and the role of organized professional activities, as well as the customer demand for spreading new ideas and design solutions for the fast-growing computer industry. The paper recognizes and explains the contribution of John Vincent Atanasoff to the invention and early development of electronic digital computing and the design of the modern computers that changed the world. © 2024 ieee.

An event-driven spectrum-aware routing algorithm based on the Hungarian algorithm (ESRH) is proposed to improve the spectrum utilization and the energy efficiency of cognitive radio sensor networks(CRSN). The method performs clustering in a distributed and self-organized manner and selects the node with the largest weight as the cluster head (CH). The Hungarian algorithm is used to assign the channels with smaller occupancy probability of primary user (PU), longer idle time and higher throughput to sensor nodes (SUs), which reduces the channel competition from SUs to PUs and improves the data transmission success rate. The gateway nodes and packet forwarding nodes are used for relay communication between clusters. Simulation results show that ESRH outperforms ESAC and ERP algorithms in terms of transmission performance, routing stability and network lifetime in a multi-round event-driven CRSN. © 2023 ieee.

Autonomous orchestration in distributed systems is a solution that attracts attention in 5G and beyond. Indeed, proposing a distributed orchestrator system with an Edge Cloud network can ensure autonomous management and service continuity, even when remote resources are not reachable. This feature is one of the key advantages of fifth-generation (5G and beyond) cellular networks, as stated by 3GPP (release 18), particularly regarding Proximity-based Service (ProSe), service management, and so on. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address the current gap in the edge cloud system to achieve greater proximity and distributed self-management, thereby providing services closer to the users. This is crucial for meeting the requirements of real-time applications such as gaming, Virtual Reality, augmented reality, vehicle-based services, etc. This paper proposes a self-orchestrator system within the concept of Home 5G architecture, based on 3-tier edge cloud networks, known as Home Edge computing (HEC). We validate our proposal using a Vehicle-to-vehicle-to-Home Server (V2V2H) use case to evaluate the latency of content sharing between end-devices and the HEC server.

Binary neural network (BNN) is widely used in speech recognition, image processing and other fields to save memory and speed up computing. However, the accuracy of the existing binarization scheme in the realistic dataset is obviously low, and the input layer uses 32-bit floating point to avoid excessive precision loss, which requires additional computing units and increases the computational burden. Therefore, it is very important to improve the input layer, save computing resources and reduce precision loss. In this paper, we propose a parallel convolution binary neural network accelerator architecture (PC-BNA). Based on our proposed BNN model, we design an efficient field programmable gate array (FPGA) based accelerator. The input of the first layer is binarized, the traditional binary convolution layer is replaced by a parallel binary convolution, and the network building blocks are improved. The experimental results show that the proposed PC-BNA has higher accuracy and better performance on CIFAR-10. The image recognition accuracy is as high as 91.4%, which is superior to the state-of-art of the BNN accelerator. Compared to the state-of-the-art BNN model, when using the same model size, the use of look-up-table (LUT) saves 9.08%, and the digital signal processor (DSP) saves 27.7%. The results suggest that it is promising for PC-BNA in future high performance mobile artificial intelligence applications. © 2022 ieee.

The scheduling mechanism in Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) focuses on the enhancement of energy efficiency by organizing actions like cluster management, data aggregation, and communication. Amongst the powerful algorithms proposed for WSNs, LEACH and its variants are more popular. This paper focuses on the performance of Low Energy-Aware Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and one of its variants, REACT-LEACH. The primary divergence between LEACH and the Residual Energy-Aware Clustering Transformation protocol for LEACH (REACT-LEACH) lies in their CH selection and rotation mechanisms. While both protocols optimize energy consumption and task distribution among nodes, the real-Time scheduler synchronizes the simulation clock with external real-Time, enabling accurate evaluation of WSN behavior. The significance of scheduling mechanisms in WSNs portrays the comparative advantages of LEACH and REACT-LEACH, emphasizing their adaptability and energy-efficiency features. © 2023 ieee.

In this paper, the proposed system presents a two-stage forest fire detection system that first uses a wireless sensor network of MQ sensors and a Node MCU and then a YOLOv8 forest fire detection model to reduce false alarms. The entire process is seamlessly integrated with the Raspberry Pi, which immediately triggers an email notification for quick action upon receiving confirmation of a fire. As the frequency and severity of wildfires continue to escalate, it is imperative that we take swift action to address their devastating impact. The YOLO model was able to achieve an accuracy of 92% with low power and memory consumption on the MCU. The method serves as a demonstration of the potential of combining innovative technologies to solve environmental problems and contributes to the development of effective and proactive fire detection systems using IOT and Machine learning. © 2024 ieee.

As the focus on highly intelligent robots continues, a problem that cannot be ignored has emerged: resource constraints. Considering the game problem of resource limitation and the level of intelligence, we focus on lightweight intelligence. This work is a further refinement of our previous work, a heterogeneous lightweight intelligent multi-robot system. Inspired by the nature creatures "octopus" and "ants". First, we propose a heterogeneous centralized-distributed architecture, which can make robots collaboration more flexible and non-redundant. Second, to reflect lightweight intelligence, we use the Raspberry Pi, a low computing and power consumption internet of things (IoT) device, as a processing platform and first propose a quantitative definition of the lightweight intelligent system. Then, combining the centralized-distributed architecture and the lightweight computing platform, we propose an adapted algorithm called OCTOANTS and apply it to the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) field. The OCTOANTS architecture consists of one brain and eight tentacles, which can achieve complex things with proper collaboration between them. Finally, we use heterogeneous cameras and heterogeneous algorithms to form a lightweight intelligent collaborative system that can run in the real world. On the low-grade platform Raspberry Pi our heterogeneous tentacles frame rate can reach 41fps and 99.8fps respectively, power consumption is only 2W and 1.2W. At the same time, our heterogeneous system is on average 7.2% more accurate than the state-of-the-art homogeneous system and can be applied to a wider range of application scenarios, demonstrating the superiority and feasibility of our OCTOANTS.

Advances in Internet-of-Things, artificial intelligence, and ubiquitous computing technologies have contributed to building the next generation of context-aware heterogeneous systems with robust interoperability to control and monitor the environmental variables of smart environments. Motivated by this, we propose HeteroSys, an end-to-end multi-functional smart IoT-based system prototype for heterogeneous and collaborative sensing in a smart IoT-based environment. A unique characteristic of HeteroSys is that it relies on Home Assistant (HA) to collate heterogeneous sensors (e.g., passive infrared sensors (PIR), reed (door) switches, object tags, wearable wrist-mounted, water leak sensors, and internet protocol cameras), and uses a variety of networking protocols such as Zigbee open standard for mesh networking, WiFi, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communication. The reliance on HA (and its broad community support) makes HeteroSys ideal for various applications such as object detection, human activity recognition and behavior patterns. We articulated the development phase, integration, testing challenges and evaluation of the HeteroSys. We conducted an extensive 24-hour longitudinal data collection from 5 participants performing 6 activities by deploying in an indoor home environment. Our assessment of the acquired dataset reveals that the representations learned using deep learning architecture aid in improving the detection of activities to 83.1% accuracy.

In recent years, UWSNs have emerged as a game-changer in many aquatic applications, including exploration, environmental monitoring, target tracking for underwater navigation, terrain-assisted navigation, and many more. The intricacy of the underwater environment presents several obstacles for the deployment of sensor nodes, and UWSNs are dynamic networks, unlike terrestrial wireless sensor networks. Instead of transferring data from every node to a destination node, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) provide a more reliable option for data collecting in UWSNs. Nevertheless, a major challenge in data collection for UWSNs is the development of AUV positioning algorithms that are both delay-aware and energy-efficient. A trustworthy AUV-based data-collection routing strategy employed for UWSNs with the goal of decreasing network latency and increasing network lifespan. A positioning mechanism is used by the proposed protocol to gather data utilizing AUVs. With the goal of lowering power usage, the sink node coordinates AUV data collecting from the sensor nodes. To improve scalability, sensor nodes are first grouped into clusters, and then an AUV is assigned to each cluster. Second, in order to ensure the trustworthy gathering of data, the Actor 3 Critic (A3C) for every AUV is designed using the Markov decision process (MDP). In regards to energy consumption, delay, coverage percentage, and dependability, the simulation results validate the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed method. © 2024 ieee.
