The distributed computing continuum systems (DCCS) and representation learning (ReL) are two diverse computer science technologies with their use cases, applications, and benefits. The DCCS helps increase flexibility with improved performance of hybrid IoT-Edge-Cloud infrastructures. In contrast, representation learning extracts the features (meaningful information) and underlying explanatory factors from the given datasets. With these benefits, using ReL for DCCS to improve its performance by monitoring the devices will increase the utilization efficiency, zero downtime, etc. In this context, this paper discusses the promising role of ReL for DCCS in terms of different aspects, including device condition monitoring, predictions, management of the systems, etc. This paper also provides a list of ReL algorithms and their pitfalls which helps DCCS by considering various constraints. In addition, this paper list different challenges imposed on ReL to analyze DCCS data. It also provides future research directions to make the systems autonomous, performing multiple tasks simultaneously with the help of other AI/ML approaches.

Numerous security threats, such as sinkhole attacks, tampering attacks, and denial-of-service (DoS) assaults, are present in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Thus, it is essential to design an effective system in order to identify and detect these assaults in WSNs in a timely manner. This article performs a thorough examination of several standard models used to identify intrusions in network environments. Features like statistical, higher order statistical features and technical indicators are considered in this analysis for the effective extraction of relevant features. Then, the conventional classifiers like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Neural Network (NN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and Deep Belief Network (DBN) is deployed and analysed with respect to the extracted features. At last, the conventional techniques are analyzed with varied feature combinations. By investigating these models, we hope to gain a better grasp of their strengths and limitations, opening the door for the creation of WSN intrusion detection systems (IDS's) that are more successful. This research also adds significant insights to the continuing efforts intended at guaranteeing the security and dependability of WSNs across diverse applications and domains by illuminating the subtleties of intrusion detection models. © 2024 ieee.

This paper presents a new technique to a position sensor in UWSNs with the recognition of the Seagull Optimization Algorithm. UWSNs are particularly useful for applications in environmental monitoring and military monitoring, but accurate sensor localization is difficult due to the signal loss in underwater environments and in the presence of external factors. Based on the Motivation Model, the SOA, motivated by the seagulls' distributed foraging behavior, is a possible solution to the dilemma by striking a midway between exploration and exploitation. The synthesis of exact methodology is outlined here along with the creation of synthetic dataset and a proof of concept MATLAB code for the evaluation of the proposed SOA-based localization algorithm. A performance evaluation, which involved the use of computational simulations on a wide variety of antennas, clearly shows that the SOA achieves a higher localization accuracy in much shorter time, while consuming less power compared to other methods such as PSO, GA, or hybrid methods. The stability is one more strongest side of proposed algorithm which has been confirmed by robustness analysis, so it can be effectively used in dynamic underwater environment. The current research is not only useful in showing how the SOA can be used for the UWSN localization in specific domains, but also valuable to the development of the new UWSN localization method that is efficient and accurate, for the further expansion of the UWSN in the vital marine sphere. © 2024 ieee.

With the rapid growth of industrial Internet of Things (HoT) applications, real-time wireless networks (RTWNs) are playing an increasingly important role in providing real-time, reliable, and secure communication services for these applications. A key challenge in RTWN management is to ensure real-time Quality of Services (QoS), especially in the presence of unexpected external (i.e., application-side) and internal (i.e., network-side) disturbances. This paper presents a novel framework, DS-PaS, to determine the packet transmission schedule for multi-channel multi-hop RTWNs at the data link layer in a distributed and dynamic fashion. DS-PaS is able to (i) handle external disturbances, (ii) support spatial reuse, (iii) meet deadlines of all critical tasks, and (iv) minimize the number of dropped non-critical packets. To avoid transmission collisions when using inconsistent information in a distributed framework, DS-PaS incorporates several key advances in both the data-link layer protocol and algorithm design so that individual nodes can build on-line schedules with only local interference information. Extensive evaluation based on both testbed implementation and simulation validates the correctness of the DS-PaS design and demonstrates its effectiveness compared to the state of the art.

In recent years, the volumes of information processed and transmitted over the network are rapidly increasing, while the demand for speed and quality of transmitted data is also increasing. As a result, there is a need to use edge computing, which allows reducing network response time and more efficiently using bandwidth, as well as significantly improving the performance of the data transmission system. Article describes the application of edge computing in the form of transferring processes to an edge computing cluster, and presents the results of research on existing migration processes, full transfer time and downtime, identifying the optimal migration process for further implementation of the service migration automation algorithm. The following empirical research methods were used in the work: comparative evaluation method and experiment. The work considers the transfer of computational processes to an edge computing cluster;a comparative analysis of methods for automated service migration is carried out;an optimal migration strategy is identified;an algorithm for automating service migration is developed. Solutions related to automation of migration are excellent for use in the field of Internet of Things. They contribute to improving application performance and reducing response time. Automatic service migration allows increasing process efficiency and reducing system maintenance costs."

Timely hybrid synchrony distributed systems are the kind of systems that do have timely-bounded synchrony constraints for both node processing execution and link message delivery. This hybrid synchrony feature proved to be useful for solving certain problems in the literature, for example, the consensus problem. A physical hybrid substrate for these systems is not a solution that goes in accordance with sus-Tainability standards for several reasons basically in terms of energy use, resource consolidation, E-resources waste, and data centers' environmental effect. In our work we propose virtual networks for data centers that host timely hybrid synchronous distributed systems, and this solution would result in minimizing the environmental impact, while still providing reliable and available solutions. This work is a continuity of our previous one where we proposed a resources allocation mathematical model. The contribution of our current work is threefold, firstly we motivate the use of hybrid synchrony virtual networks by clarifying sustainable aspects, along while listing real-life applications that would benefit from it, secondly, we detail the phases of the resources allocation process, and thirdy, we make further experiments that our previous ones with the objective of evaluating the performance of the micro-embedding phase. Results show that the proposed model can handle the embedding problem in an efficient manner within an acceptable solving time. © 2024 ieee.

This paper presents a Consensus ADMM-based modeling and solving approach for the stochastic ACOPF. The proposed optimization model considers the load forecasting uncertainty and its induced load-shedding cost via Monte Carlo sampling. The sampled scenarios are reduced using a clustering method combined with simultaneous backward reduction techniques to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed approach is tested on two ieee systems, achieving about 2% cost reduction and more than 15 times lower reliability index in stochastic load settings compared to the baseline approach. © 2024 ieee.

Scheduling tasks close to their associated data is crucial in distributed systems to minimize network traffic and latency. Some Big Data frameworks like Apache Spark employ locality functions and job allocation algorithms to minimize network traffic and execution times. However, these frameworks rely on centralized mechanisms, where the master node determines data locality by allocating tasks to available workers with minimal data transfer time, ignoring variances in worker configurations and availability. To address these limitations, we propose a decentralized approach to locality-driven scheduling that grants workers autonomy in the job allocation process while factoring in workers' configurations, such as network and CPU speed differences. Our approach is developed and evaluated on Crossflow, a distributed stream processing platform with data-aware independent worker nodes. Preliminary evaluation experiments indicate that our approach can yield up to 3.57x faster execution times when compared to the baseline centralized approach where the master controls data locality. © 2023 ACM.

The paper investigates the problem of optimizing a sensor network for monitoring a continuous area, considering the bounded coverage areas of sensors. This task is formulated in terms of the maximum coverage location problem. A mathematical model is proposed as a two-criteria optimization problem. The objective functions are the maximum area of the covered part of the region and the minimum total overlapping of sensor coverage areas. This model is transformed into an elastic (quasi-physical quasi-human) model, which differs from the known one in forming the extrusion potential energy function. To solve the problem, an original approach was implemented, combining local and global optimization stages. At the stage of local optimization, the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method was used, in which the gradients were calculated analytically or from first-order differences depending on the shape of sensor coverage areas. At the stage of local optimization, the multistart method was used. The implementation of the approach has been tested for the polygonal shape of the region and elliptical shapes of the sensor coverage areas. © 2023 ieee.

Blockchain technologies have gained significant popularity for their decentralized and tamper-evident characteristics. The key component of these technologies is the consensus protocol that dictates the correctness and operational efficiency of the system. Bitcoin's Proof of Work(PoW) is one such widely used promising consensus protocol. The major concern of the PoW consensus is the harm it does to the environment. It consumes a large amount of electricity and produces a high carbon footprint on the environment. In this paper, we propose "Proof-of-Pedal(PoP)", a novel Byzantine consensus protocol to address these major environmental issues in PoW. The proposed PoP consensus protocol is designed to replace the computer energy in PoW with human energy, specifically calories generated through cycling. It has been implemented on Pedalchain(also referred to as Greenchain), a novel blockchain system and support for both public and permissioned environments. The PoP consensus protocol represents a variation of Proof-of-Stake (PoS), employing PedalCoin cryptocurrency tokens as the staking mechanism for block miners. The protocol facilitates applications that allocate Pedalcoins to individuals as rewards for their cycling activities and the subsequent reduction in carbon emissions achieved through those activities. In the Pedalchain blockchain, individual activities and corresponding carbon footprint scores are securely recorded as transactions, resulting in automatic credit of Pedalcoins to the respective individuals. To ensure privacy while capturing Cycling activity and carbon footprint data, we have developed ClimGuards, a mobile application enabled with Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) technology. The system also incorporates a feature that allows users to spend their Pedalcoins at a variety of businesses, including sports stores, hotels, restaurants, and more, while unlocking special offers.
