Broadcast of information in wireless sensor networks is an important operation, e.g., for code updates, queries, membership information, etc. In this paper, we analyze and experimentally compare the performance of vanilla versions of several well-known broadcast mechanisms namely, flooding, site percolation, bond percolation, and modified bond percolation. We carry out our comparison for different network topologies: random, grid, and clustered. Our analysis is performed at the link layer level using a MAC-independent propagation model based on real experiments from the literature. Our main metrics are bandwidth, energy usage, and broadcast latency. Our analytical and experimental results show that, given a desired high reliability for all topologies, flooding and site percolation has the lowest latency; but flooding consumes the most energy per broadcast compared to site percolation. For dense networks, modified bond percolation further lowers energy consumption compared to site percolation, while basic bond percolation leads to a latency increase. For sparse networks, results are similar to a dense network except that site percolation consumes lower energy than modified bond percolation. We briefly discuss implications for different broadcast applications.

For the currently popular WiFi networks, the problem of communication blind spots is more acute, since the access points (APs) are not placed according to a central plan. In this paper, we design an Cyber physical system (CPS) based on an automatic mobile vehicle (AMV) to guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of real-time applications in WiFi networks. When a user enters the blind spot regions, the AMV is able to detect the deterioration of the userpsilas service quality and then move automatically to an appropriate position between the user and AP to serve as a multimedia repeater for the user and maintain the communication quality. Technologies in many fields, such as WiFi and sensor detection, are integrated in our system. In WiFi networks, AMV makes use of received signal strength indicator (RSSI) to evaluate the network quality. Through configuring many types of sensors, such as acceleration sensors and supersonic sensors, we are able to control the speed and direction of AMV, and effect obstacle avoidance. AMV can intelligently compute the best location to perform relaying based on collected statistics of peripheral sensors. It can also support uninterrupted real-time video transmission.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) have become a significant research challenge, attracting many researchers. This paper provides an overview of collaborative WSN, reviewing the algorithms, techniques and state-of-the-art developed so far. We discuss the research challenges and opportunities in this area. The major focus is given to cooperative signal and information processing in collaborative WSN in order to expose important constraints in wireless applications which require distributed computing, such as node localization, target detection and tracking. In this paper, we also present and discuss the applications of multi-agent systems into WSN as a core technology of cooperative information processing.

Many natural and artificial systems utilize QS to perform critical tasks, from self-preservation in bacteria to clustering in sensor networks. The disruption of these systems can serve many purposes, from treating diseasecausing bacteria to disabling computer worms. We have shown that digital evolution can produce solutions that are resistant to communication impairments. We demonstrated that QS digital organisms exhibit a resistance to communication impairments. Building on this work, we intend to test the effects of other types of therapies to prevent and promote QS.

In recent years, improved wireless technologies have enabled the low-cost deployment of large numbers of sensors for a variety of applications across different engineering disciplines. Because of the computational resources (processing capability, storage capacity, etc.) distributed throughout these sensing networks, it is often possible to perform advanced data analysis tasks autonomously and in-network, eliminating the need for the post-processing of sensor data. With new parallel algorithms being developed for in-network computation, it has become necessary to create a framework in which the computational resources available throughout a wireless sensing network can be best utilized in the midst of competing computational requirements. In this study, a Pareto-optimal market-based method is developed in order to autonomously distribute various computational tasks with competing objectives and/or resource demands across available network resources. This method is experimentally validated on a network of wireless sensing prototypes.

In wireless sensor networks (WSN), location information is one of the critical issues for both performance and efficiency. This paper presents a new positioning method in WSN with reasonable implementation cost and excellent performance. Given a few reference nodes with known locations and node range estimates based on linear frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) technique, all nodes' location information can be derived by solving a set of circle equations. This technique is cost efficient, scalable and easy to be implemented. The simulation results show that the new method is fast convergent and precise.

This paper presents a vision-based system for cooperative object detection, localization and tracking using wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The proposed system exploits the distributed sensing capabilities, communication infrastructure and parallel computing capabilities of the WSN. To reduce the bandwidth requirements, the images captured are processed at each camera node with the objective of extracting the location of the object on each image plane, which is transmitted to the WSN. The measures from all the camera nodes are processed by means of sensor fusion techniques such as Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The paper describes hardware and software aspects and presents some experimental results.

We demonstrate an anchor-free mobile node localization system using Ymote, which is equipped with the ieee 802.15.4a RF module based on chirp spread spectrum (CSS) technology. In contrast to conventional centralized systems, our system is fully distributed, hence scalable, and enables self-positioning in anchor-free environment. The localization system is implemented on the RETOS operating system.

The exponential growth in wireless services has resulted in an overly crowded spectrum. The current state of spectrum allocation indicates that almost all usable frequencies have already been occupied. This makes one pessimistic about the feasibility of integrating emerging wireless services such as large-scale sensor networks into the existing communication infrastructure. Cognitive radio is the emerging dynamic spectrum access technology to achieve open spectrum sharing flexibly and efficiently. It is an intelligent wireless communication system that is aware of its radio environment and is capable of adapting its operation to statistical variations of the radio frequency. Ad-hoc networks in terms of cognitive radio rely on a common control channel (CCC) for operation. Control signals are used to enable cooperation communicate through a common control channel. However, common control channel may not be always available in an open spectrum allocation scheme due to interference and coexistence with primary systems (PS) of the spectrum. In this paper, we propose a novel common control channel selection protocol (DCP-CCC) in a distributed way based on appearance patterns of PS and connectivity among nodes. Using simulation results, we evaluate the performance of the proposed CCC selection scheme.

The development of ambient intelligence (AmI) applications usually implies dealing with complex sensor access and context reasoning tasks, which may significantly slow down the application development cycle when vertically assumed. To face this issue, we present CASanDRA, a middleware which provides easily consumable context information about a given user and his environment, retrieving and fusing data from personal mobile devices and external sensors. The framework is built following a layered service oriented approach. The output data from every CASanDRA's layer are fully accessible through semantic interfaces; this allows AmI applications to retrieve raw context features, aggregated context data and complex `images of context', depending on their information needs. Moreover, different query modes -subscription, event-based, continuous and on-demand- are available. The current `mobile-assisted' version of CASanDRA is composed by a CASanDRA Server, developed on an applications container and hosting the system intelligence, and CASanDRA Lite, a mobile client bundling a set of sensor level acquisition services. How an AmI application may be effortlessly built on CASanDRA is described in the paper through the design of an `Ambient Home Care Monitor'.
