In this paper, we have proposed a framework of systems-on-chips clustering in application to complicated sensor networks. The framework can be applied to address the communication issues in distributed and large-scaled sensor nodes in wireless sensor network application. There are two communication categories under consideration, i.e. intra-nodes and inter-nodes. Due to the potentially higher frequency in the signal propagation within the sensor node, the characteristics of the interconnect among various systems-on-chips cannot be described in the traditionally lumped R, L, C components. We adapt a distributed transmission line model to address such issues and possibly improve the reliability in the intra-nodes communication. Furthermore, based on the bandwidth requirements of each sensor node, the large-scaled senor network is proposed to be transformed into a maze diagram by a user defined threshold bandwidth, so that many existing approaches may be applied to determine the routing paths in the inter-nodes communication to improve the efficiency of the overall network.

Connected dominating sets (CDSs) are probably the most common way of constructing virtual backbones for broadcasting operation in wireless sensor networks. This is because such backbones guarantee to reduce unnecessary message transmissions or flooding in the network. In this paper we propose a simple localized algorithm to construct a small-sized CDS. Considering the sensors deployed in the plane, our main idea is based on the computation of convex hulls of sensor nodes (nodes are considered points in the plane) in a localized manner and a simple coloring scheme, which produces a CDS in unit disk graphs whose size is at most 38*|MCDS| where |MCDS| is the size of a minimum CDS. To the best of our knowledge, this is a significant improvement over the best published results in the same context [5]. We also analyze grids and trees to compute the exact approximation ratios for the problem. We show that our algorithm produces an optimal CDS if the graph is a tree and in the case of grids the approximation factor is 2.

While electronic sensors and actuators have a long history of being used for a broad variety of industrial applications, these applications tend to be self-contained, for example, to control a process or to automate an operation. The recent technology advancements in ubiquitous connectivity and distributed computing have afforded improved business performance or novel business models by narrowing the gap between the real-world conditions and the state of business information systems with sensors and actuators seamlessly integrated in critical business processes. This paper first describes three industry examples to motivate and discuss the key challenges for the ubiquitous applications of sensors and actuators. In particular, it argues for the need of an architecture that promotes component assembly for deployment scalability and supports application-specific QoS requirements such as timeliness, reliability and security. The paper also describes a prototype solution to illustrate our approach and progress.

This paper proposes a distributed coordinate-free non-triangulated hole recovery algorithm for sensor networks called 3MeSH-DR (triangular mesh distributed hole recovery), which recovers coverage holes with the minimum number of redundant nodes using only connectivity information. If this hole cannot be triangulated by edges between pairs of nodes closer that 2 units from each other, the boundary of the hole is detected accurately with the minimum number of edges. It is shown to be error-free by thousands of simulations with different random topologies and node densities. Because of its high reliability and modest requirements for computing power and memory, 3MeSH-DR is an efficient solution for hole detection and recovery without location information in real sensor network applications.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) deployed for mission-critical applications face the fundamental challenge of meeting stringent spatiotemporal performance requirements using nodes with limited sensing capacity. Although advance network planning and dense node deployment may initially achieve the required performance, they often fail to adapt to the unpredictability of physical reality. This paper explores efficient use of mobile sensors to address the limitations of static WSNs in target detection. We propose a data fusion model that enables static and mobile sensors to effectively collaborate in target detection. An optimal sensor movement scheduling algorithm is developed to minimize the total moving distance of sensors while achieving a set of spatiotemporal performance requirements including high detection probability, low system false alarm rate and bounded detection delay. The effectiveness of our approach is validated by extensive simulations based on real data traces collected by 23 sensor nodes.

In this paper, we present the idea that large-scale ambient intelligence takes the vision of anytime-anywhere to anytime-anywhere-anything (A3). Based on this vision, we argue that a mix of computing, communication and interface technologies remains limited in providing seamless access to services if the data and services from various autonomously operating entities remain non-sharable. Thus, we propose a sensor grid infrastructure that forms the key resource sharing backbone and provides secure access to valuable sensor, computational, data, and storage resources for supporting large-scale ambient intelligence.

While symmetric-key schemes are efficient in processing time for sensor networks, they generally require complicated key management, which may introduce large memory and communication overhead. On the contrary, public-key based schemes have simple and clean key management, but cost more computational time. The recent progress of elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) implementation on sensors motivates us to design a public-key scheme and compare its performance with the symmetric-key counterparts. This paper builds the user access control on commercial off-the-shelf sensor devices as a case study to show that the public-key scheme can be more advantageous in terms of the memory usage, message complexity, and security resilience. Meanwhile, our work also provides insights in integrating and designing public-key based security protocols for sensor networks.

This paper presents a distributed support vector regression (SVR) algorithm for sensor networks. The idea behind this algorithm is to make use of the structure similarity between sensor networks and SVRs with 2D input data in order to implement SVR in a distributed way. During training stage, each sensor node provides its 2D coordinates as an input pattern and a sensory data as an output to the algorithm. By using local wireless communication with neighbors and kernel function with finite support, each sensor node independently learns its own Lagrange multipliers. During evaluation stage of learned regression function, each sensor node obtains a local result by communicating with local neighbors and estimates a global result by using a consensus algorithm. Simulations are provided to verify the proposed algorithm.

Low power radios, such as the CC2420, have been widely popular with recent sensor platforms. This paper explores the potential for energy savings from adding a high-power, high-bandwidth radio to current sensor platforms. High-bandwidth radios consume more power but significantly reduce the time for transmissions. Consequently, they offer net savings in total communication energy when there is enough data to offset wake-up energy overhead. The analysis on energy characteristics of several ieee 802.11 radios show that a feasible crossover point exists (in terms of data size) after which energy savings are possible. Based on this analysis, we present a bulk data transmission protocol for dual radio systems. The results of simulations and prototype implementation show significant energy savings at the expense of introducing acceptable delay.

Personal Health (pHealth) sensor networks are generally used to monitor the well being of both athletes and the general public to inform health specialists of future and often serious ailments. The problem facing these domain experts is the scale and quality of data they must search in order to extract meaningful results. By using peer-to-peer sensor architectures and a mechanism for reducing the search space, we can, to some extent, address the scalability issue. However, synchronisation and normalisation of distributed sensor streams remains a problem in many networks. In the case of pHealth sensor networks, it is crucial for experts to align multiple sensor readings before query or data mining activities can take place. This paper presents a system for clustering and synchronising sensor streams in preparation for user queries.
