The future of computing is to be a core discipline. Nearly everything in computing is cross-cutting, not only over computing applications, but over society. systems with significant Cyber and Physical components, such as advanced transportation, electric power transmission management, advanced sensing in agriculture, and social services. To realize this future, the discipline must not only embrace all aspects of computing applications and tools, from requirements to quality over the system life cycle but also the semantics of applications [1], including socio-economic aspects of design and decision making.

We consider the scenario of distributed data aggregation in wireless sensor networks, where each sensor can obtain and estimate the information of the whole sensing field through local data exchange and aggregation. The intrinsic trade-off between energy and delay in aggregation operations imposes a crucial question on nodes to decide optimal instants for forwarding their samples. The samples could be composed of the information from their own sensor readings or an aggregation of information with other samples forwarded from neighboring nodes. By considering the randomness of the sample arrival instants and the uncertainty of the availability of the multiaccess communication channel due to the asynchronous nature of information exchange among neighboring nodes, we propose a decision process model to analyze this problem and determine the optimal decision policies at nodes with local information. We show that, once the statistics of the sample arrival and the availability of the channel satisfy certain conditions, there exist optimal control-limit type policies which are easy to implement in practice. In the case that the required conditions are not satisfied, we provide two learning algorithms to solve a finite-state approximation model of the decision problem. Simulations on a practical distributed data aggregation scenario demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed policies, which can also achieve a desired energy-delay tradeoff.

sensor localization methods based on Monte Carlo sampling approximate the sensor position distributions by a weighted set of samples. These approaches traditionally require complete knowledge of the probabilistic distributions of the uncertainties in the sensor system. In this paper, we propose alternative sampling-based methods which do not require complete knowledge of the probabilistic distributions. The sensor position distributions are represented by a set of samples and costs which are described by spatial parametric regions. Few parameters are needed to characterize these regions, and therefore the amount of information to be transmitted to the rest of the sensors to self-localize is simplified. Computer simulations show that the proposed methods are more robust and less computationally intensive than standard sampling approaches.

sensor networks are often used to sense the physical world and provide observations for various uses. In hostile environments, it is critical to control the network access to ensure the integrity, availability, and at times confidentiality of the sensor data. This paper develops efficient methods for distributed access control in sensor networks. The paper starts with a baseline approach, which provides a more flexible and efficient way to enforce access control when compared with previous solutions. This paper then extends the baseline approach to enable privilege delegation, which allows a user to delegate its privilege to other users without using a trusted server, and broadcast query, which allows a user to access the network at a large scale efficiently. The privilege delegation and broadcast query are very useful in practice; none of the current solutions can achieve these two properties.

Through automated negotiation we aim to improve task allocation in a distributed sensor network. In particular, we look at a type of adaptive weather-sensing radar that permits the radar to focus its scanning on certain regions of the atmosphere. Current control systems can only computationally handle the decision making for a small number of radars because of the complexity of the process. One solution is to partition the radars into smaller, independent sets. Redundant scanning of tasks and loss of cooperative scanning capabilities can occur as a result. With negotiation we can reduce these occurrences, helping to ensure that the correct radars scan tasks based on the overall social welfare. We develop a distributed negotiation model where on each cycle the overall system utility improves or remains constant. Experimental results show that as compared to the centralized task allocation mechanism, the proposed distributed task allocation mechanism achieves almost the same level of social welfare but with a significantly reduced computational load.

Change detection in images is of great interest due to its relevance in applications such as video surveillance. This paper presents the underlying theoretical problem of image change detection using wireless sensor network. The proposed system consists of multiple image sensors which make local decisions independently and send them to the base station which finally makes a global decision and declares whether a significant change has occurred or not.

The allocation of channel bandwidth without significantly increasing the interference among existing users is a challenge for the future UWB networks. Our research work presents a novel rake optimization and power aware scheduling (ROPAS) architecture for UWB networks. We propose to use cognitive radio (CR) for dynamic channel allocation among the requesting users while limiting the average power transmitted in each sub-band. In our proposed ROPAS architecture, dynamic channel allocation is achieved by a CR-based cross-layer design between the PHY and medium access control (MAC) layers. The joint power control and link scheduling in the MAC layer reduces adjacent channel and multi-access interference introduced by multiple access of the links. Furthermore, the Rake optimization with its strategic selection of propagation paths achieves the minimal bit-error rate (BER) at the rake receiver by mixed integer programming. Our simulated-based performance evaluation confirms the effectiveness and novelty of our proposed ROPAS architecture.

Wireless sensor-actuator networks (WSANs) have recently been suggested as an enhancement to the conventional sensor networks. The powerful and mobile actuators can patrol along different routes and communicate with the static sensor nodes. This work is motivated by applications in which the objective is to minimize the data collection time in a stochastic and dynamically changing sensing environment. This is a departure from the previous static and deterministic mobile element scheduling problems. In this paper, we propose PROUD, a probabilistic route design algorithm for wireless sensor-actuator networks. PROUD offers delay-minimized routes for actuators and adapts well to network dynamics and sensors with non-uniform weights. This is achieved through a probabilistic visiting scheme along pre-calculated routes. We present a distributed implementation for route calculation in PROUD and extend it to accommodate actuators with variable speeds. We also propose the Multi-Route Improvement and the Task Exchange algorithms for balancing load among actuators. Simulation results demonstrate that our algorithms can effectively reduce the overall data collection time in wireless sensor-actuator networks. It well adapts to network dynamics and evenly distributes the energy consumption of the actuators.

As networks become more and more complicated and applications more and more demanding, a very common network topology for state-of-the-art multimedia applications supporting emerging user - centric frameworks is a heterogeneous wired/wireless architecture. A network architecture solution for Indoor/Outdoor heterogeneous networking applications, to support both multimedia and sensor applications suitable for such frameworks is proposed in this paper. Furthermore, an integrated DRM system architecture is proposed for the protection of Intellectual Property, characterized by its interoperability aspect.

A large number of potential applications of sensor and actuator networks (SANETs) have emerged recently, for example in the areas of energy production and distribution and health care and telemedicine. SANETs integrate the tasks of sensing and actuation, the process of controlling the operation of a physical system by setting values for parameters of interest. Of particular importance in SANETs is the ability to set actuator parameters, typically depending on values observed by the sensors, so as to achieve a system-wide objective. However, SANETs with large number of nodes or covering wide geographical areas present scalability challenges that necessitate the use of summarization techniques resulting in sub-optimal actuation values. There is therefore a clear trade-off between the level of summarization and the quality of the computed actuation parameters. This paper focuses on two interdependent problems. The first is the issue of efficient aggregation and summarization of the measurements. The second is the distributed computation of optimal actuation parameters to achieve a system-wide objective. We first consider the problem under the assumption of semi-static sensed values and then extend our model to cover the general case where sensor state changes, triggering update events. We develop algorithms for efficient summarization of these events and demonstrate that they minimally impact optimal actuation. Our work is motivated by the domain of energy distribution networks and, in particular, intelligent electrical grids.
