We consider applications of sensor networks wherein data packets generated by every node have to reach the base station. This results in a many-to-one communication paradigm referred to as convergecast. We are interested in determining a TDMA schedule that minimizes the total time required to complete the convergecast. We consider a simple version of the problem wherein every node generates exactly one packet. We propose a distributed convergecast scheduling algorithm that requires at most 3N timeslots, where N represents the number of nodes in the network. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that actual number of timeslots needed is around 1.5N. In addition to time efficiency, we prove that our convergecast scheduling algorithm requires the nodes to buffer no more than two packets at any instance. We propose a sleep schedule that conserves more than 50% of the energy. We present simulation results for a real application scenario to show that our convergecast scheduling algorithm performs significantly better than existing convergecast algorithms.

A multi-agent system (MAS) approach on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) comprising sensor-actuator nodes is very promising as it has the potential to tackle the resource constraints inherent in these networks by efficiently coordinating the activities among the nodes. In this paper, we consider the coordinated sensing coverage problem and study the behavior and performance of four distributed reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms: (i) fully distributed Q-learning, (ii) distributed value function (DVF), (iii) optimistic DRL, and (iv) frequency maximum Q-Iearning (FMQ). We present results from simulation studies and actual implementation of these DRL algorithms on Crossbow Mica2 motes, and compare their performance in terms of incurred communication and computational costs, energy consumption and the achieved level of sensing coverage. Issues such as convergence to local or global optima, as well as speed of convergence are also considered. These implementation results show that the DVF agents outperform other agents in terms of both convergence and energy consumption

Autonomous robot systems have to manage their energy wisely in order to complete their missions. Typical approaches seek to conserve energy by energy-efficient motion or sensor planning. This paper puts forth a distributed systems approach to power management. Specifically, it develops and presents AutoPower, which is a model that characterizes robot software systems' computation and communication energy behaviors. With AutoPower, it is possible to make principled decisions about (1) where to deploy software components across the distributed computing resources of autonomous robotic systems, and (2) how the different systems involved should communicate to best meet overall mission objectives. We showcase AutoPower by using a multi-robot search-and-rescue mission as a guiding application. For this scenario, application of the model shows that there are counter-intuitive energy trade-offs in configuring such application software. Further, by using AutoPower to guide deployment and interconnects at runtime, for certain configurations, overall computing system lifetimes can be increased by up to 57% over a base-line configuration

Wireless sensor networks have stringent constraints on system resources and data aggregation techniques are critically important. However, accurate data aggregation is difficult due to the variation of sensor readings and due to the frequent communication failures. To address these difficulties, we propose a scalable and robust data aggregation algorithm. The novelty of our work includes two aspects. First, our algorithm exploits the mixture model and the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for parameter estimation. Hence, it captures the effects of aggregation over different scales while keeping the communication cost low. Second, our algorithm exploits loss-tolerant multi-path routing schemes. Hence, it obtains accurate statistical information even in the presence of high link and node failure rates. We demonstrate that our techniques reduce communication cost while retaining the precious statistical information otherwise neglected by other aggregation techniques. Our evaluation shows the proposed techniques are robust against link and node failures, and perform consistently well.

In this paper we describe bio-WWS, a bio-feedback system for rehabilitation based on dedicated, wireless, sensor-network architecture. The sensor network is designed to be distributed on the user's body for balance monitoring and correction. The hardware and software architecture (communication protocols, power management policies and application-level control) have been tuned to optimize cost, battery autonomy and real-time performance required for this application. An approach combining distributed detection with error-correcting codes has recently been proposed to design a fault-tolerant classification system in wireless sensor networks. The detection result of each sensor must be transmitted to a fusion center for making a final decision. The mis-classification probability using this approach is high when the transmission channel is highly noisy. This work proposes a novel adaptive retransmission algorithm to improve the mis classification probability. The fusion center calculates reliability of each received detection result while making the final decision. When the final decision is not reliable, the sensor which has sent the received result with the lowest reliability will be asked to retransmit its detection result by the fusion center. Simulation results show that the misclassification probability can be effectively reduced through the retransmission

In a wireless sensor network, energy efficient transmissions are important because each node has a limited battery. On the other hand, the energy limitation should not compromise the robustness in end-to-end packet delivery. This paper proposes an energy efficient routing scheme that can ensure high robustness despite dynamic link quality. The key ideas are to form a routing tree with one degree of redundancy where each node maintains two parents, namely default and backup, toward the sink, and to dynamically switch between the default and backup links depending on the dynamic link quality. For energy efficiency, the default parents are selected based on the minimal expected transmission (METX) criterion while the backup parents are selected with a combination of METX and signal strength criteria. The switching mechanism is designed to be adaptive with inertia so that unnecessary changes in route can be avoided. The proposed routing scheme has been evaluated through NS-2 simulator. The results confirm that a 36% improvement in robustness can be achieved in a random topology without any significant degradation in energy efficiency.
