In this paper, a novel agent-based distributed intrusion detection system (IDS) is proposed, which integrates the desirable features provided by the distributed agent-based design methodology with the high accuracy and speed response of the principal component classifier (PCC). Experimental results have shown that the PCC lightweight anomaly detection classifier outperforms other existing anomaly detection algorithms such as the KNN and LOF classifiers. In order to assess the performance of the PCC classifier on a real network environment, the relative assumption model together with feature extraction techniques are used to generate normal and anomalous traffic in a LAN testbed. Finally, scalability and response performance of the proposed system are investigated through the simulation of the proposed communication architecture. The simulation results demonstrate a satisfactory linear relationship between the degradation of response performance and the scalability of the system

Pervasive human-centric computing, the emerging next-generation computing, focuses on humans rather than machines. Pervasive computing's goal of "all the time, everywhere" access replaces today's mobile and distributed computing's goal of "anytime, anywhere" access. Pervasive computing requires cross-disciplinary collaborations among experts in fields such as intelligent systems, agent technologies, autonomic computing, security and privacy, human factors engineering and ergonomics, human factors psychology, augmented reality computing, wearable computing, wireless and mobile computing, location-and context-aware computing, sensor computing, device technology, and social sciences. Thus, it is crucial to reform software engineering education in order to well prepare software engineers for the new challenges and opportunities presented by pervasive human-centric computing. This paper presents and discusses our project results and the lessons learned about the software engineering education reform

In the wireless sensor networks, an important issue of area coverage is to know how many sensor nodes are needed in a deployment under a certain kind of distribution. In that way, the nodes can be dense enough to form a complete and connected cover of interest area. Another issue that needs to be addressed is the "redundancy of connectivity" caused by the use of the well known sufficient condition that "the communication range is at least twice the sensing range". In this paper, we show our result in solving these problems, a practical method to form a connected -coverage with a connected dominating set (CDS). By introducing a measure of node density called the biggest vacant square territory (BVST), we prove that the point coverage offered by a CDS implies area coverage of the area of interest. The 1-point-coverage of a CDS with a reduced R and a certain number of deploying sensors guarantees -area-coverage, or simply -coverage. Such assurance is verified via a simulation study on the CDS in [7] under random node distribution.

This paper introduces an agent-based target tracking system. A comparison between two communication schemes among these agents and a central processing unit to provide the target tracking task is also provided. The target tracking is done in two stages. In the first stage, Genetic Algorithms is implemented to insure optimum coverage of the available agent-sensors over the target area. sensors are activated based on need according to the tracking requirement of the moving object. To optimize power usage and hence minimize human intervention for maintenance purpose, unneeded sensors are kept in a low-power stand-by state. In the second stage sensor-agents can communicate among each other through either a centralized or a distributed communication scheme. Results show that distributed system, in which sensor-agents have direct communication among themselves without the need for a central processing unit, proves to be more efficient.

Current sensor network platforms perform multiple processes including sensor sampling, communication, and various computational tasks. When deployed in unpredictable environments, complex schedules of those processes may arise. Typical sensor network qualities like periodic sampling of sensors, avoidance of process starvation and automatic energy management are required to be maintained in such situations. We propose a scheduling framework for senor nodes consisting of a scheduler, a dispatcher and a controller for an on-line adaptation of the process execution. The key components are a controller and an enhanced dispatcher implementing strategies like jitter correction and starvation avoidance. Further, the framework is aware of the energy consumption of sensors. We show that our controlled scheduling framework performs significantly better than a non-controlled single scheduler in unpredictable environments. Our proposed measures are efficient to implement. Results are shown by extensive simulations and a first implementation on the particle computer platform

In this paper the problem of efficient data aggregation and report delivery in QoS-constrained distributed sensor networks is investigated. An analytical statistical model is introduced, to represent the data aggregation and report delivery process in sensor networks, with specific delivery quality requirements in terms of the achievable end-to-end delay and the successful report delivery probability. Furthermore, a lower bound approximation of the corresponding successful report delivery probability is obtained. The tradeoffs among various design parameters, as well as the impact of these parameters on the successful report delivery probability and its corresponding bound, are also discussed and evaluated

Localization is a key function in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Many applications and internal mechanisms require nodes to know their location. This work proposes a new sequential estimation algorithm for distributed cooperative localization, whose simplicity makes it amenable to self-localization in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), characterized by their restricted resources in energy and computation. The algorithm is inspired in sequential Monte-Carlo estimation techniques, viz. particle filters that excel in robustness and simplicity for estimation applications. However, particle filters require significant amounts of memory and computational power for managing large numbers of particles. The presented technique reduces the number of particles, while retaining the convergence, accuracy and simplicity properties, as demonstrated in simulation experiments

The location estimation is a fundamental and essential issue for wireless sensor networks( WSNs). In this paper, we assume that only a few sensor nodes (named as beacon nodes) get their locations by Global Positioning System (GPS) and the remaining nodes without GPS (named as normal nodes) need to estimate their own locations by gathering the nearby neighboring information. Existing works are either too costly or not accurate enough. To improve previous works, we propose a distributed location estimation algorithm for WSNs. In our algorithm, each node without location information only needs to collect the location information of neighboring nodes and use simple computation to estimate its location. Besides, we improve the accuracy of the normal node's estimative region by discarding the communication area of the beacon node (named as the farther neighboring beacon node), which does not cover the normal node, from the original estimative region. We derive some rules to adjust the estimative region according to the relative location of the normal node and the farther neighboring beacon node. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better accuracy of estimative locations

A computation, communication, command and control (C4) model is proposed for the scenario of a space-borne remote sensing application involving a spacecraft or satellite cluster. An XML brokerage system is a distributed XML database system that comprises data sources and brokers which, respectively, hold XML documents and document distribution information. However, all existing information brokerage systems view or handle query brokering and access control as two orthogonal issues: query brokering is a system issue that concerns costs and performance, while access control is a security issue that concerns information confidentiality. As a result, access control deployment strategies (in terms of where and when to do access control) and the impact of such strategies on end-to-end system performance are neglected by existing information brokerage systems. In addition, data source side access control deployment is taken-for-granted as the "right" thing to do. In this paper, we challenge this traditional, taken-for-granted access control deployment methodology, and argue that query brokering and access control are not two orthogonal issues because access control deployment strategies can have a significant impact on the "whole" system's end-to-end performance. We propose the first in-broker access control deployment strategy where access control is "pushed" from the boundary into the "heart" of the information brokerage system
