This paper deals with distributed and asynchronous discrete event systems diagnosis. This paper has proposed an unfolding approach to the distributed diagnosis of concurrent and asynchronous discrete event dynamical systems. This presentation was informal, based on a toy illustrative examples. Fault diagnosis for distributed discrete event systems with asychronous communication is analyzed.

We have proposed smart sensor networks (S-Nets) as an architecture and set of distributed algorithms to extract, interpret and exploit networked sensor devices. Heretofore, the development of this approach has been done in simulation. In this paper, we describe two complementary implementations of S-Nets: (1) on a set of Berkeley motes comprised of low-power 8-bit, 128 Kb memory processors, communication devices and sensors, and (2) on a set of JStamps having 32-bit controllers, 2 Mb of memory and native execution Java hardware.

Emerging large scale distributed networking systems, such as P2P file sharing systems, sensor networks, and ad hoc wireless networks, require replication of content, functionality, or configuration to enact or optimize communication tasks. The placement of these replicated resources can significantly impact performance. We present a novel self-stabilizing, fully distributed, asynchronous, scalable protocol that can be used to place replicated resources such that each node is "close" to some copy of any object. We describe our protocol in the context of a graph with colored nodes, where a node's color indicates the replica/task that it is assigned. Our combination of theoretical results and simulation prove stabilization of the protocol, and evaluate its performance in the context of convergence time, message transmissions, and color distance. Our results show that the protocol generates colorings that are close to the optimal under a set of metrics, making such a protocol ideal for emerging networking systems.

This paper presents a novel semantic model and a hybrid perceptive frame approach for the integration of sensing, computation, communication and control of reconfigurable mobile sensor networks composed of a collection of mobile robotic sensing nodes. In this paper, the entire mobile sensor network is modelled as a dynamical system, which has sensing, computation, communication and locomotion capabilities. A semantic model of mobile sensor networks is proposed to describe the relationship of different sensor nodes and the corresponding multi-modal sensory information at varying abstraction levels. Based on this model, the hybrid perceptive frame describes the hybrid nature of cooperative sensor networks and integrates sensing, communication and cooperation by perceptive references and perceptive semantics. The hybrid perceptive reference frame approach allows the mobile sensor nodes to respond to the unpredictable environments and coordinate with each other based on communication and the perception of environments.

The architecture of the acquisition image supporting flow control of the projector is presented. It is achieved by a simple filtering of a periodic sample string, which results in a reduction of updates of high-level concrete images. It is shown that the reduction of the observation flow performed by the filtering action equals to the ratio of the maximum and the average of the absolute value of the first signal derivative in relation to time. An example of the event-triggered signal monitoring in LonWork/EIA-709 technology as a built-in feature of an intelligent sensor device is also presented. The Neuron C code, that exemplifies the "send on delta" technique implementation in a sensor node's application program, is shown.

Limited battery life of the nodes in a sensor network, has encouraged optimization of resources so as to maximize network lifetime. When network resources are scarce, satisfying user requirements without sacrificing network performance becomes a challenging problem. In this paper, we address this by using a novel service differentiation approach and use mutipath routing, to provide prioritized treatment to time critical applications in a distributed, energy-efficient and scalable manner. We utilize our multipath routing protocol primarily designed for load balancing and enhance its usefulness by exploring the use of resource reservation in achieving Quality of Service aware multipath routing. We are able to provide a reduced response time to critical queries without adversely affecting the network lifetime.

Energy in a wireless sensor network (WSN) is a precious resource. Deployment of mobile sensors in a WSN is an energy consuming process and it should be carefully designed. In this paper, we propose an intelligent energy-efficient deployment algorithm for cluster-based WSN by a synergistic combination of cluster structuring and a peer-to-peer deployment scheme. Performance of our algorithm is evaluated in terms of coverage, uniformity, and time and distance traveled till the algorithm converges. Our algorithm is shown to exhibit excellent performance.

We present DINTA, distributed in-network task allocation - a novel paradigm for multi-robot task allocation (MRTA) where tasks are allocated implicitly to robots by a pre-deployed, static sensor network. Experimental results with a simulated alarm scenario show that our approach is able to compute solutions to the MRTA problem in a distributed fashion. We compared our approach to a strategy where robots use the deployed sensor network for efficient exploration. The data show that our approach outperforms such an exploration-only algorithm. The data also provide evidence that the proposed algorithm is more stable than the exploration-only algorithm.

A large number of sensors networked together form selforganizing pervasive systems that provide the basis for implementation of several applications involving distributed, collaborative computations. Energy dissipation is a critical issue for these networks, as their life-time is limited by the battery power of the sensors. In this paper, we focus on design of an energy-balanced, energy-optimal algorithm for sorting in a single-hop sensor network. Energy optimality implies that the overall energy dissipation in the system is minimized. Energy-balancedness ensures that all the sensors spend asymptotically equivalent amount of energy in the system. Uniform energy dissipation is desirable as it enables the network to remain fully functional for the maximum time. We demonstrate that given a single-hop, singlechannel network of n randomly distributed sensors, sorting can be performed in O(n log n) time and energy, with no sensor being awake for more than O(log n) time steps. In a p-channel network, where p ∓ n 1-ϵ for 0 < ϵ ∓ 1, sorting can be performed in O(n = p log n) time and O(n log n) energy with no node being awake for more than O(log n) time steps.

In mobile-agent-based distributed sensor networks (MADSNs), instead of moving data from an individual sensor node to a processing center as a typical scenario in the client/server-based computing, mobile agents on that carry the executable code are dispatched from the processing center to the sensor nodes and process data locally. Because of the complicated behavior of the mobile agents, there has not been much work done in modeling and simulation. In this paper, a Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) is used to model the mobile agents in DSNs. GSPN is a very popular modeling tool for systems that feature concurrency, synchronization and randomness. One of the most challenging problems in GSPN modeling is to design a mechanism for breaking the transition conflicts. This paper presents a random transition selector based on joint entropy and a so-called "rolling rocks random (R3) selector" to break conflicts among immediate transitions. The GSPN model based on this transition selector is synthesized on a Xilinx Virtex 1000E Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) using reconfigurable components. Simulation results show that the proposed transition selector performs better than the commonly used random selector.
