Human activity prediction has become increasingly prevalent in a plethora of time-critical applications. To realize accurate identification and prediction of human behaviour, we propose a situation-aware wearable computing system. A wearable computing system has the capability to perceive, comprehend and project situations by analyzing the human behavioral patterns in different environments. In particular, this work proposes a situation-aware human activity prediction (SA-HAP) approach based on sequential pattern mining that aims to anticipate future activities and tailor its responses according to situations by analyzing frequent sequential patterns and their correlations to understand how these situations are interrelated. The approach not only improves prediction accuracy but also provide the foundation for a more informed decision-making process, as the projected situations can be explained using the identified behavioral patterns. The approach is compared with other traditional techniques for activity prediction (LSTM and HMM), achieving better performance on the Extrasensory dataset. © 2024 ieee.

We propose a hybrid forecasting model that includes time series segmentation, which is based on the DBScan clustering algorithm, and a penalty spline. Each step of the hybrid model required modification for real-time use. The DBScan density-based algorithm was supplemented with technology for working with noise and transition between clusters. A recurrent penalty spline model has low computational complexity and, accordingly, high forecasting speed inside the hybrid model. The forecast efficiency was assessed by a number of indicators that reflect predictive efficiency and extrapolation accuracy of using synthetic, model and real TS. Accuracy indicators (MSPE, MAPE) are below 4%. In comparison with other widely-spread forecasting methods, the proposed hybrid algorithm ranks among the known algorithms. © 2024 ieee.

With Artificial Intelligence applications becoming ubiquitous, both industrial and consumer applications require more computing availability. The increasing need for power-constrained Artificial Intelligence computing asks for new and innovative solutions, on both hardware design as well as on software toolchains that leverage them. At the same time, the challenge of EU technological sovereignty encourages an industry trend oriented to developing its own solutions for power efficient High Performance computing (HPC). In this context, as partners in the ISOLDE project started in 2023, we propose the development of new power efficient embedded HPC accelerators, HPC design platforms, as well as High Level Synthesis (HLS) approaches and toolchain technology designs for RISC-V based applications. Specifically, we envisage applications such as Fast Fourier Transform, Number Theoretic Transforms, Post Quantum computing and artificial intelligence, as well as designing ONNX targeted toolchains based on the LLVM compiler, open solutions for Neural Networks (NN) accelerators and new OpenMP extensions. Within the ISOLDE framework, the envisaged applications to prove the readiness of these technologies are the Automotive and the Smart Home demonstrators.

Data-intensive applications, such as machine learning and pattern recognition, result in heavy Network-on-Chip (NoC) communication loads and a tremendous increase in the communication latency. At the same time, the error-tolerant nature of these applications makes approximate communication an effective way to relieve the sharp increase of the network latency. This paper proposes an adaptive congestion-aware approximate communication mechanism (ACAC) that can alleviate the communication congestion of NoC systems in heavy communication loads. Our cycle-accurate simulations have shown that the proposed ACAC effectively reduces the network latency similar to ABDTR under a 22% to 52% lower data approximate ratio and significantly decreases the additional compression control traffic volume under real applications.

The vehicular networks along with 5G technology is promising and has a potential to revolutionize transportation sector, making it both smarter and safer. By analyzing data from connected vehicles, ML can improve traffic flow, predict accidents, and optimize route planning. However, challenges such as accurately predicting vehicle movements, managing computational and network resources, and ensuring data security in the cloud persist. The proposed study is presenting a comprehensive approach that combines various ML techniques with a focus on edge computing and MLbased attack detection. Edge computing improves the performance, as data is being processed closer to its source, enabling real-time decision-making. Furthermore, incorporating ML-based attack detection mechanisms strengthens network security by identifying and responding to cyber threats promptly. This integrated strategy aims to refine classification algorithms used in traffic management, resulting in more accurate predictions and efficient resource use. By harnessing the advantages of both edge and cloud computing while implementing robust security measures, this study aspires to design an efficient and more secured transportation system powered by 5G technology. The ultimate goal is to develop a system that not only improves traffic flow and reduces accidents but also ensures data security and optimal resource management, paving the way for the future of smart mobility. © 2024 ieee.

The healthcare industry has seen an important development due to the Internet of Things (IoT), which has led to transformative improvements in patient care, diagnostics, and healthcare delivery systems. The many applications of IoT in healthcare and medicine are looked at in this review article, from telemedicine and smart hospitals to remote patient monitoring. IoT enables improved medication adherence, remote consultations, and real-time health monitoring through mobile devices, sensors, and connected systems. But there are also several serious obstacles to the broad use of IoT in healthcare, such as concerns about data security and privacy, interoperability, regulatory compliance, scalability, and cost impact. This article shows the apparent benefits of IoT setups via case studies and success stories, providing recommendations for conquering challenges and perceiving the future. Stakeholders in the healthcare ecosystem may make full use of IoT to enhance patient outcomes, simplify healthcare delivery, and drive innovation in digital health by navigating these challenges. © 2024 ieee.

The ionosphere is a highly variable region existing in upper atmosphere of earth, showing notable physical and structural dissimilarities in electron concentration and ion composition. These dissimilarities cause delay in reception of radio signals travelling through ionosphere, which finally affects accuracy of satellite based navigation and positioning systems like NavIC. For modelling and reducing the effects of ionospheric delay on NavIC signals considering the comprehensive study of Ionospheric Pierce Point (IPP) distribution is very important. It is also responsible for enhancing accuracy and reliability of navigation and positioning of NavIC system by including precise positioning algorithms into actual/real-time IPP data. This paper presents approach for IPP calculation, evaluating the effect of geostationary and geosynchronous satellites on IPP distribution. For real-time monitoring and calculation of ionospheric parameters over particular regions geostationary satellites are found more beneficial in calculating IPP as there are less variations in latitude and longitude coordinate values of IPP as shown in this paper. Thus the system can correct ionospheric delay and enhance positional accuracy of NavIC system more effectively by using real-time IPP data specifically in tough conditions such as equatorial and low-latitude regions where ionospheric irregularities/space weather activities are more active. Moreover, paper also investigates future studies directed at improving IPP calculation methods and enhancing NavIC positioning algorithms for tough and authentic positioning in various operational environment. ©2024 ieee.

5G-and-beyond cellular networks are set to enable ultra-reliable, low-latency communications (URLLC), catering to a wide range of applications such as real-time control and extended reality (XR). For these URLLC applications, it is crucial to ensure per-packet communication reliability and high throughput. To this end, we propose a novel joint scheduling and power control approach, denoted by PktR, that ensures application-specific per-packet communication reliability as well as high channel spatial reuse and high network throughput. PktR is designed as a close-loop system, incorporating Gain-Ratio-K (GRK) interference modeling, optimization, and transmit power control mechanisms. PktR ensures predictable interference control for receivers and fine-tunes transmit power at transmitters in a highly agile manner. Our measurement studies demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of ensuring per-packet communication reliability in live cellular systems, by showing that PktR ensures high per-packet communication SINR (e.g., 20dB) and high success probability (e.g., 0.9) across diverse network and environmental settings. Through local, distributed coordination, PktR also outperforms state-of-the-art solutions significantly. For instance, besides ensuring predictable guarantee of required per-packet communication reliability in scenarios where existing solutions are unable to provide such guarantees for up to 31.01% of the network links, PktR improves the network throughput by a factor up to 1.596.

State-of-charge (SOC) estimation of supercapacitors has been extensively studied in the literature, while most of existing studies are focused on the SOC estimation of a stand-alone supercapacitor cell. In practical applications, however, supercapacitors are connected with balancing circuits to eliminate the imbalance among cells. When the balancing circuit is activated, the system dynamics of the cell switches to a new mode, implying that existing SOC estimation methods cannot be applied directly. In this paper, we propose a switching Kalman filter method for the SOC estimation of supercapacitors balancing systems. The linear switched systems model is established by combining the equivalent circuit model of supercapacitors and the switched resistor balancing circuit. The observability of the switched system is analyzed and its discrete-time form is given. A switching Kalman filter is designed to estimate the SOC of the switched system where the filter gain can be dynamically switched according system mode. A laboratory experimental platform has been built for the supercapacitor balancing system. Extensive experiment results verify that, the proposed method can significantly improve the SOC estimation accuracy when supercapacitors are under the cell balancing mode. © 2023 ieee.

We present CoboDeck - our proof-of-concept immersive virtual reality haptic system with free walking support. It provides prop-based encountered-type haptic feedback with a mobile robotic platform. Intended for use as a design tool for architects, it enables the user to directly and intuitively interact with virtual objects like walls, doors, or furniture. A collaborative robotic arm mounted on an omnidirectional mobile platform can present a physical prop that matches the position and orientation of a virtual counterpart anywhere in large virtual and real environments. We describe the concept, hardware, and software architecture of our system. Furthermore, we present the first behavioral algorithm tailored for the unique challenges of safe human-robot haptic interaction in VR, explicitly targeting availability and safety while the user is unaware of the robot and can change trajectory at any time. We explain our high-level state machine that controls the robot to follow a user closely and rapidly escape from him as required by the situation. We present our technical evaluation. The results suggest that our chasing approach saves time, decreases the travel distance and thus battery usage, compared to more traditional approaches for mobile platforms assuming a fixed parking position between interactions. We also show that the robot can escape from the user and prevent a possible collision within a mean time of 1.62 s. Finally, we confirm the validity of our approach in a practical validation and discuss the potential of the proposed system.
