The field of "smart city" has recently seen an increasing demand on the technology consumer market, this leads to the need to develop new solutions to meet the demands of users. A smart city is defined as an urban area that uses various types of electronic methods and sensors to collect data. Statistics obtained from this data are used to manage assets, resources, and services effectively;moreover, this data is used to improve or optimize the various activities within the city. The present research consisted of studying and implementing different neural network training models using the NVIDIA Jetson Nano development kit. This is a small embedded system capable of running Artificial Intelligence applications supported by the parallel processing capabilities of the embedded GPU. Using this built-in system, certain real-timeapplications can be developed for image classification or object detection, in our case asphalt pits.

Dynamic reconfiguration is one of the key challenges in adaptive systems. As many tasks of adaptive systems are carried out by software and flexible machines, adaptation can be mainly defined by reconfiguration. The real-time Container Architecture provides a novel framework for these updates by running distributed embedded software in containers and enabling real-time reconfiguration of these software components following a reconfiguration plan. Yet, it limits I/O access of the containerized software components to GPIO, besides UDP-based communication. We extend the platform with new I/O methods and evaluated the extension with the smart factory showcase system Cube Bot. The extensions enable access to a camera and a robot from within the containers in compliance to the platform concepts. Within the application containers, different languages, state-of-the-art AI technology and the serial interface of the robot can be used. This will show the usefulness of the real-time Container Architecture in an even broader industrial context and its capability for extension to other use cases.

With the trend to consolidate multiple systems onto the same hardware platform, which can be observed for example in the automotive industry, virtualization of embeddedsystems becomes increasingly important. Often small and efficient realtime operating systems (RTOS) run besides general purpose operating systems (GPOS) with a convenient, high level application interface. When virtualizing embedded reconfigurable systems, FPGA characteristics have to be considered like limited FPGA area and high reconfiguration latencies. We present the FPGA virtualization layer L4ReC that enables the shared usage of reconfigurable resources by several guest operating systems under consideration of the constraints given by embedded reconfigurable systems. First results target isolation, energy efficiency, and FPGA resource management considering special requirements of guest operating systems.

A deep learning-based face anti-spoofing system has been proposed here. This work has been implemented in four segments. Firstly, an image preprocessing task is performed to extract the facial region. Then, the texture analysis of the facial region is performed to compute discriminant features. For this, a robust approach to deep learning techniques is needed, starting with defining some convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures for feature computation, followed by the classification of genuine vs. imposter face liveliness. The motivation of this work is to find both software- and hardware-based solutions to access biometric-based real-timesystems through robust and vigorous face-liveness detection techniques. The recognition system's performances are further improved by image acquisition-challenging issues, image augmentation, fine-tuning, transfer learning, and the fusion of various trained CNN models. Finally, the above steps have been embedded in Raspberry Pi devices to build the system for real-timeapplications. The experimentation with two benchmark databases, NUAA and CASIA Replay-Attack, and comparing the performance with some well-known methods relating to the proposed system area show the proposed system's superiority.
