System engineering has been integral to some of mankind's greatest achievements in the 20th Century from launching astronauts into space to building some of the most intricately designed and built systems ever devised. However large-scale systems acquisition has often struggled conceptually with being responsive to change. Often this stems from engineering following a defined process focused on solving the challenges presented to them and devising an end-product(s) that meets specifications. This paper draws parallels from the challenges faced by businesses to stay relevant in a forever-changing dynamic business environment to glean lessons for defence acquisition. We suggest exploring circular systemsengineering ecosystems to address the needs of stakeholders seeking to create future-proof complex adaptive systems and products that must operate in uncertain environments. The main goals here are to address the inherent uncertainty and improve stakeholder value.

Industrial companies developing complexsystems have face challenges with undesired unforeseen system behavior emerging in late development stages or during the system's operational use. This paper proposes a systematic approach from a systemsengineering perspective to overcome these challenges. Combining Design of Experiments with regression analysis while conveying a beneficial human vs machine task balance enables us to shift the focus from individual requirements to the overall system design for system testing without overwhelming efforts. We aim to keep the specific performance stated through requirements while ensuring a minimum performance throughout the parameter space. Actively using measurements during the development enables monitoring of the system performance throughout the parameter space facilitating detection and subsequent elimination or reduction of inherent detrimental emergent behavior. The proposed procedure also gives a solid rationale for the case company in what to test and not.

This research adopts the system modeling approach to develop an alliance risk ontology framework, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method for alliance risk extraction, and NVivo qualitative analysis for data analytics and risk visualization. The research developed the System of systems (SOS) alliance risk ontology framework and found two hundred and seven alliance risks from interactions of systems. Research provides the fundamental framework for risk categorization, analytical depth, and data treatment method, which can be significant to pre-analyze and mitigate critical risks in engineering projects involving alliances.

Tendon-driven systems have become popular and efficient solutions for remotely positioning motors and actuation systems in various mechanisms. They address specific needs such as reducing the weight and inertia of moving components and minimizing their dimensions. Tendon-actuated systems offer benefits like low cost and the absence of backlash, leading to significant interest in tendon modeling within the scientific community. This interest spans from analytical solutions with inextensible tendons to computer-aided engineering (CAE) approaches utilizing tendons as deformable elements. However, developing tendon-based actuation systems through CAE tools has been limited due to substantial computational requirements and the challenge of obtaining reliable, technically applicable results. Finite element analysis (FEA) becomes complex and unsuitable for the design phase due to the significant deformation and displacement resulting from tendons' flexible behavior. Consequently, research into robotic systems actuated by tendons typically relies on analytical calculus and data from costly prototypes, requiring significant time and investment. Moreover, incorporating soft structures makes creating a comprehensive analytical model of the entire system in three-dimensional space daunting or even impossible, particularly with more complex soft structures, thus making FEA analysis the only viable approach. This work reviews the main solutions explored in the literature for solving these systems, aiming to provide designers with a broader view of the possible techniques that can be used based on the specific application.

Ensuring the modeled SoS accurately represents real-world systems is challenging. Due to the significant amount of interaction these models have with the actors using them throughout the design lifecycle, their reliability can often be unpredictable and typically degrade unless constant verification and quality assurance protocols are followed. This paper aims to shed light on ways to address this concern, particularly by gleaming into how information systems (IS) can be made robust to aid in making data models less vulnerable to change.
