The objective of this work is to address the problem of efficient, security-aware and fault-tolerant resource management in Cloud computing (CC) systems, aiming to allocate and schedule client's submission to available machines in such a way that providers achieve optimal resource utilization while users meet their applications' performance and security requirements with a minimum expenditure and overhead. To this aim we developed a number of intelligent scheduling and load balancing mechanisms for an optimal spread of workload on distributed machines and servers of the considered cloud platform taking into account two general criteria: the execution time of the submitted tasks and the level of provided security assurance.

Using fuzzy logic rules, a Self-tuning structure for the self-tuning level of a Human Simulated intelligent Controller (HSIC) has been designed. This structure has fuzzy self-tuning abilities in the swing-up control of a cart-double pendulum system. It efficiently accomplishes the online self-tuning of the control parameters of a HSIC with hierarchical and multi-mode control structure. The computer simulation and real-time experiments of the swing-up control of a cart-double pendulum system show that the online fuzzy self-tuning of the control parameters markedly enhances the robustness and adaptability of the HSIC.

False alarms are a big challenge for intrusion detection systems (IDSs). A lot of approaches, especially machine learning based schemes, have been proposed to mitigate this issue by filtering out these false alarms. But a fundamental problem is how to objectively evaluate an algorithm in terms of its ability to correctly identify false alarms and true alarms. To improve the utilization of various machine learning algorithms, intelligent false alarm reduction has been proposed that aims to select and apply an appropriate algorithm in an adaptive way. Traditional metrics (e. g., true positive rate, false positive rate) are mainly used in the algorithm selection and evaluation, however, no single metric seems sufficient and objective enough to measure the capability of an algorithm in reducing false alarms. The lack of an objective and single metric makes it difficult to further fine-tune and evaluate the performance of algorithms in reducing IDS false alarms. In this paper, we begin by describing the relationship between the process of intrusion detection and the process of false alarm detection (reduction). Then we provide an information-theoretic analysis of intelligent false alarm reduction and propose an objective and single metric to evaluate different algorithms in identifying IDS false alarms. We further evaluate our metric under three scenarios by comparing it with several existing metrics.

One of the major benefits of driving vehicles in controlled, close formations such as platoons is that of reduced air drag. However, this will set hard performance requirements on the system actuators, sensors and controllers of each vehicle. This paper analyzes the effects of fundamental limitations on the longitudinal and lateral control performance of a platoon and the effects on following distance, perceived safety and fuel economy. The trade-off between minimizing fuel consumption and maintaining a safe following distance is analyzed and described. The analysis is based on fundamental properties of linear systems such as Bode's phase area relation. Design guidelines are proposed and results from vehicle testing are presented.

In this paper, we study the effects of impaired communications on the performances of auction-based task allocation in a dynamic surveillance scenario. We propose a novel connectivity term to include in the bid valuation formula, that aims at improving communications in the multi-robot team. We evaluate our method as well as another state-of-the-art method using robot inter-distance to maintain communication, on randomly generated scenarios and on a real-world scenario. We demonstrate that including our connectivity term in the bid valuation formula improves the performances of the auction scheme.

The only direct method to evaluate safety is to monitor the number of accidents and near misses. However, vehicle accidents are statistically infrequent and near misses are heavily underreported, making this approach unfeasible. An alternative strategy is to examine and evaluate metrics which have been shown to be precursors to accidents. The widespread use of metric evaluation for measuring safety in vehicle operations is limited due to a lack of ubiquitous data collection and communication systems. In addition, the effective evaluation of a safety metric is strongly dependent on the high-level context of the situation. This paper presents a system that records and exchanges data and context information to facilitate the calculation of informative safety metrics, and shows results from a number of implementations of this system in a mining context.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) may change both vehicle dynamics and driver behaviour. To study traffic-related impacts of a powertrain-related ADAS for trucks, a simulation-based approach was developed. The paper presents an approach to interconnecting a microscopic traffic simulation model and a vehicle simulation model including modelling of ADAS functionality. Verification tests demonstrate that the approach is practical and that high ADAS penetration rates can be run within reasonable simulation execution times. The verification tests also demonstrate that current truck dynamics modelling in the Aimsun and Vissim traffic simulation models does not capture all relevant aspects of truck driving behaviour and dynamics related to vertical grades.
