Emergence of smart appliances and high performance IoT devices is promoting studies on more functional and intelligent home services using these devices. Especially, in developed countries including Japan with aging population and declining birthrate, it is urgent to develop technologies to monitor living situations of residents including elderly persons and improve their quality of life (QoL) through home services based on the activity recognition technology. However, activity recognition systems in general require many types/number of sensors and hence they are difficult to deploy and operate. In this paper, we propose a system consisting of low-cost and easy-to-deploy sensors based on energy harvesting that can collect data of resident's activities of daily living (ADL) for months without maintenance. The system was deployed in 10 homes of senior citizens where we collected ADL data for two months each. We also estimated the ADLs from the collected data by using long short-term memory (LSTM), a deep learning model. As a result, ADLs could be estimated at high recall rate of 82.4% on average and hence we found that the proposed system has high applicability to actual services.

Multi-tenant database is a new cloud computing paradigm that has recently attracted attention to deliver database functionalities for multiple tenants to create, store, and access their databases over the internet. This multi-tenant database should be highly configurable and secure to meet tenants' expectations and their different business requirements. In this paper, we propose an architecture design to build an intermediate database layer to be used between software applications and Relational database Management systems (RDBMS) to store and access multiple tenants' data in the Elastic Extension Table (EET) multi-tenant database schema. This database layer combines multi-tenant relational tables and virtual relational tables and makes them work together to act as one database for each tenant. This architecture design is suitable for multi-tenant database environment that can run any business domain database by using a combination of a database schema, which contains shared physical structured tables and virtual structured tenant's tables. Further, this multi-tenant database architecture design can be used as a base to build software applications in general and Software as a Service (SaaS) applications in particular.

Working towards gaining competitive advantage and establishing stable relationships with their supply chain intermediaries, fast moving consumer goods companies are currently focusing their attention on intelligent, goal-based funds investment. Traditional trade promotion management systems (TPMS), however, fail to provide the complex, yet flexible analytical functionality required for accurate tracing of promotional effectiveness and optimization of trade promotional spending. Most commonly encountered issues range from unreliable, inaccurate and inconsistent data and low user friendliness of the system to complicated, inflexible and time-consuming reporting. In this paper, we design the first reference system architecture integrating business intelligence technologies with trade promotion management systems, meeting the business needs and rendering high-quality reporting services to the end users. Our proposed architecture incorporates a reference trade promotion management process and is the first architecture model extending the in-built functionality of TPMS with BI tools. We outline the theoretical foundations and the design principles of the architecture and evaluate its validity with 19 interviews and one case study following the TOGAF ADM steps. Despite the time restriction for further validation, the architecture is based on extensive academic and industry literature and the evaluation confirmed its potential of solving common issues of current trade promotion management systems.

The rising need for security in the last years has led to an increased use of surveillance cameras in both public and private areas. The increasing amount of footage makes it necessary to assist human operators with automated systems to monitor and analyze the video data in reasonable time. In this paper we summarize our work of the past three years in the field of intelligent and automated surveillance. Our proposed system extends the common active monitoring of camera footage into an intelligent automated investigative person-search and walk path reconstruction of a selected person within hours of image data. Our system is evaluated and tested under life-like conditions in real-world surveillance scenarios. Our experiments show that with our system an operator can reconstruct a case in a fraction of time, compared to manually searching the recorded data.
