In the last 5-10 years, there have been several attempts at the creation of a musical database that can be queried acoustically. The main problem hindering such efforts so far has been scalability, with limits of the frequently used three-character representation for melodic contour becoming apparent even at relatively small database sizes. Extending the contour representation to 24 semitone resolution would go a long way towards solving such problems, but applying current string matching methods to a 24 character alphabet would prove difficult at best, and human errors would be far more prevalent. Here we show that the vast majority of errors at this resolution, although more numerous, are quite predictable using current methods of probabilisic modeling. This is evidence which we hope opens the door to more intelligent forms of note matching.

This paper reports on an industrial application of modern signalprocessing technology in the development of a new automatic conveyor and bolting machine for underground coal mining. The machine is of special interest to the mining industry as it improves mine personnel safety as well as increasing the efficiency of roadway construction. We show how real-time signalprocessing component technologies are needed to overcome a range of sensing, monitoring, control, and navigational challenges. We also highlight some of the important practical issues associated with the deployment of intelligentprocessingsystems in coal mining contexts.

This paper presents an intrusion detection system consisting of multiple intelligent agents. Each agent uses a self-organizing map (SOM) in order to detect intrusive activities on a computer network. A blackboard mechanism is used for the aggregation of results generated from such agents (i.e. a group decision). In addition, this system is capable of reinforcement learning with the reinforcement signal generated within the blackboard and then distributed over all agents which are involved in the group decision making. systems with various configurations of agents are evaluated for criteria such as speed, accuracy, and consistency. We describe in this paper the application of type-2 fuzzy logic to the problem of automated quality control in sound speaker manufacturing. Traditional quality control has been done by manually checking the quality of sound after production. This manual checking of the speakers is time consuming and occasionally was the cause of error in quality evaluation. For this reason, we developed an intelligent system for automated quality control in sound speaker manufacturing. The intelligent system has a type-2 fuzzy rule base containing the knowledge of human experts in quality control. The parameters of the fuzzy system are tuned by applying neural networks using, as training data, a real time series of measured sounds as given by good sound speakers. We also use the fractal dimension as a measure of the complexity of the sound signal.
