Classification and recognition of one and multidimensional signals is one of the important tasks in emerging technologies, particularly communication systems. In this contribution, novel digital signalprocessing techniques are employed to achieve this task. Classification decision tree algorithms have been used recently in pattern recognition problems. In this paper, we are proposing a self-designing system, using the classification tree algorithms, capable of recognizing a large number of signals. Preprocessing techniques are used to make the recognition process more effective. A combination of the original as well as the preprocessed signals is projected into different transform domains. A large number of criteria, that characterize the signals, can be developed in these domains. At each node of the classification tree, an appropriately selected less-complex and more noise-immune criterion is optimized and employed by the vector quantization (VQ) design techniques to divide the signals, presented at that node in that stage, into two approximately equal groups. ne use of VQ leads to high classification accuracy even with noisy data. At the terminal node of the tree, each signal is represented by a unique composite binary word index. Experimental results verify the excellent classification accuracy of this system even for noisy or corrupted data.

In this paper we present work towards videorealistic synthetic visual speech using non-rigid appearance models. These models are used to track a talking face enunciating a set of training sentences. The resultant parameter trajectories are used in a concatenative synthesis scheme, where samples of original data are extracted from a corpus and concatenated to form new unseen sequences. Here we explore the effect on the synthesiser output of blending several synthesis units considered similar to the desired unit. We present preliminary subjective and objective results used to judge the realism of the system.

Increasing demand for automatic large area surveillance has made methods estimating direction of arrival (DOA), especially acoustic methods, an interesting topic. In these systems false alarms and faults are a disturbing factor. This paper presents a reliability criterion and a new method to diminish these errors. In very low signal-to-noise ratio conditions there are seldom any means to improve the performance of a DOA estimator. In these cases it is important to have some information about the estimation reliability. Our focus is on wideband signals propagating as planar waves in three dimensional space. If the estimation method makes no assumptions on the signal propagation speed, it is possible to compute a reliability measure for obtained estimates. With this reliability measure we are able to decide whether the data produced by a time delay based DOA estimation system is usable or not. Indeed, with this criterion an estimation system can state its own reliability.
