Existing studies on solar thermal systems for residential complexes often face challenges in achieving a balance between energy generation, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact. This paper investigates the feasibility of a solar thermal system for meeting the Sanitary Hot Water (SHW) demand in a residential complex. The study addresses these challenges by evaluating the potential of solar thermal energy in comparison to other renewable energy sources. The analysis focuses on an existing residential complex located at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, where the roof space available for solar collectors is limited to 150 m2. The proposed system consists of 58 flat-plate vertical collectors, which were selected based on this available area. The system is projected to generate 8,217 kWh in June and 2,193 kWh in November, offsetting the energy demand in June and approximately half of the demand in November. A 30kW auxiliary boiler is proposed to cover the remaining energy deficit in November. The environmental benefits of the system include a reduction of 7.7 tons of CO2 emissions annually, by replacing gas-fired boilers. With an initial investment of £32,000, which includes the cost of collectors, heating system, and installation, the system offers a payback period of 12.5 years when factoring in annual savings from reduced gas consumption. © 2025 ieee.

In this work, an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) framework with presence of jammer, which enabled by a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (STAR-RIS) is proposed. The jammer exists in the reflective region and interferes communications, which is considered as an extended target. Then, the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the jammer's response matrix is derived. To maximize the achievable rate (AR) of the transmission user, we jointly optimize the active and passive beamforming, while satisfying the reflection users' AR constraints, the transmission power budget, the CRB for target estimation constraint and the STAR-RIS coefficient matrices constraints. Based on the alternating optimization and successive convex approximation algorithms, the original problem is decomposed into two subproblems, and each subproblem is solved by using fractional programming (FP) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) theorem. The simulation results verify the feasibility of the algorithm. © 2024 ieee.

The ability of bipedal robots to adapt to diverse and unstructured terrain conditions is crucial for their deployment in real-world environments. To this end, we present a novel, bio-inspired robot foot design with stabilizing tarsal segments and a multifarious sensor suite involving acoustic, capacitive, tactile, temperature, and acceleration sensors. A real-time signal processing and terrain classification system is developed and evaluated. The sensed terrain information is used to control actuated segments of the foot, leading to improved ground contact and stability. The proposed framework highlights the potential of the sensor-integrated adaptive foot for intelligent and adaptive locomotion.

Turbine is an important part of aero-engine, and the appearance of turbine blade crack affects the normal operation of aero-engine. It is very important to diagnose the blade crack of turbine, but due to the interference of many factors, the picked fault signal carries a lot of noise, which affects the subsequent signal processing. Therefore, improved coati optimization algorithm-variational mode decomposition-correlation coefficient(ICOA-VMD-CC) denoise algorithm is designed in this paper. Firstly, the ICOA is used to make original COA have better parameter optimization ability, then it is also used to optimize VMD parameters, and CC is used for Intrinsic mode function(IMF) screening to reconstruct signals. The results show that the optimization ability of ICOA in single-peak and multi-peak functions is greatly improved compared with other algorithms. At the same time, ICOA-VMD-CC algorithm has a good noise reduction effect on three-dimensional tip clearance signals of cracked blades. Compared with other algorithms, ICOA-VMD-CC algorithm removes the noise of irrelevant components and retains the effective peak data, achieving a good noise reduction effect. © 2024 ieee.

In electronic communications, the capability to accurately demodulate signals is a cornerstone for effective data exchange. However, in adversarial or non-cooperative settings where system parameters are unknown, traditional demodulation techniques often fail to decode the complex waveform characteristics influenced by modulation and communication specifics. This paper introduces an novel solution-a complex-valued transformer with an encoder-decoder architecture specifically designed for the classification and demodulation of single-carrier signals. By leveraging the nuances of modulation, synchronization, and bit-level information embedded within I/Q data, our proposed model learns to discriminate and decode a plethora of communication signals through a unified transformer framework. This architecture encapsulates the complexities inherent in signal processing into an end-To-end trainable model, and demonstrates robust performance in both signal classification and blind demodulation scenarios. Our experimental findings confirm that this novel architecture not only excels in classifying single-carrier signals but also performs commendably in challenging conditions where demodulation occurs without prior knowledge of signal parameters which highlights it's potential as a versatile tool for communication systems operating under non-cooperative environments, offering significant advancements over traditional methods by providing concurrent classification and demodulation capabilities within a single forward pass. © 2024 ieee.

Efficient search is an essential aspect of a question-answer system with the number of answers related to a question. Every day, millions of users seek answers that meet their needs. Thus, displaying the most relevant answers at the highest level would enhance the user experience. This paper provides a unique method for ranking answers based on a user question by combining a transformers-based model with a listwise loss function. We use the Bert model on a non-factoid question-answer dataset and then fine-tune it using the listwise loss function. The architecture is created using a list-wise technique that trains a ranking function by taking individual lists of answers to a question as in- stances and minimizing a loss function defined on both the predicted and ground-truth labels. The proposed framework is evaluated using the public dataset SemEval (2016), obtaining a MAP of 90.77%. The Paper demonstrates a considerable improvement over state-of-the-art techniques with extensive experiments. © 2023 ieee.

This research introduces innovative configurations for hybrid power divider combiners (HPDCs) featuring five and nine ports, aligning with the standards set by ieee 802.11b, g, ISM, and 802.11. The HPDCs are designed to operate at multiple bands - 2.45 GHz, 5.8 GHz, and 6 GHz - corresponding to ieee 802.11n, a, and 802.11ac, respectively. These tailored designs are specifically crafted to address the energy-efficient requirements of applications spanning the DC to 6-GHz frequency range. Notable applications include 5Genabled Passive Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, Energy Harvesting (E.H) tags, and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna beamforming. When implemented on an FR4 substrate, the proposed HPDC configurations demonstrate consistent power distribution, robust port isolation, and excellent port matching, particularly at a central design frequency of 3 GHz. These designs hold great promise in the context of satellite-cellular convergence, finding potential applications in RF energy harvesting, adaptive intelligent energy-efficient data transmission, and seamless connectivity. Of significance is the achievement of return and isolation losses falling below -7 dB, meeting the criteria for Wi-Fi 6E. This underscores the suitability of the proposed HPDCs for advanced wireless applications, affirming their potential contribution to RF energy harvesting, adaptive data transmission, and enhanced connectivity within the specified frequency range. © 2024 ieee.

In today's increasingly severe aging age, the safety requirements of the elderly living alone both in indoor and outdoor activities are increasing, in response of this social phenomenon, this paper completes a lightweight embedded fall detection system by combining embedded technology, network communication technology and the behavior recognition module of the target detection algorithm using deep learning. This study used 534 images containing fallen objects as a dataset, based on the YOLOv5 (You Only Look Once) algorithm model[1]. The model was lightweighted, and the model network structure was improved by densely connected networks. In the experimental comparison with the original model, the new model achieved the best performance with fewer iterations, and the recall rate of 97.74%, which was 1% higher than the original model;the best accuracy of 97.09%, which was 0.96% higher than the original model;and the mAP value of the improved network of 0.962. © 2023 ieee.

In this paper, a radio-frequency (RF) domain symbol level precoding technique is developed for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted downlink multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. We study a system with a base station (BS) employing an analog architecture formed by a phase shifting network which serves a number of single antenna users with the help of a RIS. Such an architecture facilitates significant reductions in power consumption and hardware complexity. The objective of this paper is to jointly derive the optimal RF precoder, RIS reflection matrix and receive processing coefficients, subject to constraints on the BS analog architecture, the total transmit power, and the structure of the RIS reflection matrix. To that end, a difficult nonconvex optimization problem is formulated and solved. An efficient algorithmic solution is developed for the considered problem. Numerical results show that the derived solution offers significant energy efficiency gains when compared to non-RIS-assisted approaches. © 2023 ieee.
