This paper presents an application of wireless sensor networks (WSN) to an in-service motor monitoring and energy management system. Based on the ieee 802.15.4 standard, wireless sensor devices are developed in the proposed system. The motor current and voltage signals are acquired and analyzed by a DSP device to get the condition of motors, and the results are transmitted over the wireless network to a central supervisory station (CSS), where they are stored, displayed and analyzed to meet the requirement of motor monitoring and energy management. This approach greatly reduces the transmission time. That makes the proposed system acceptable in real-time cases. The wireless sensor devices are demonstrated and the test results are given.

Computer-aided diagnosis and simultaneous visualization based on independent component analysis and clustering are integrated in an intelligent system for the evaluation of small mammographic lesions in breast MRI. These techniques are tested on biomedical time-series representing breast MRI scans and enable the extraction of spatial and temporal features of dynamic MRI data stemming from patients with confirmed lesion diagnosis. By revealing regional properties of contrast-agent uptake characterized by subtle differences of signal amplitude and dynamics, these methods provide both a set of prototypical time-series and a corresponding set of cluster assignment maps which further provide a segmentation with regard to identification and regional subclassification of pathological breast tissue lesions. Both approaches lead to an increase of the diagnostic accuracy of MRI mammography by improving the sensitivity without reduction of specificity.

We describe a method for determining the location of a mobile device, such as a handheld computer or mobile phone, in an indoor environment using Bluetooth beacons. Since it uses inexpensive commodity devices, this method is inexpensive to deploy. The limited range of Bluetooth reception is used to advantage. Another important advantage of this method is that it allows the mobile device to determine its location while remaining anonymous, unidentified to the beacons or other nearby devices. In such a deployment, an important design task is the placement of beacons. signal propagation in indoor environments is complex, affected by factors such as floor-plans and duct-work, varying transmission and reflection properties of building materials and furniture, and interference from other devices. Therefore, the area from which a beacon is visible is very irregular and not well approximated by simple models such as ellipsoids. Our solution permits complex reception characteristics to be accurately modeled and provides a simple method for choosing beacon locations.

The aim of this paper is to create an interface for human-robot interaction. Specifically, musical performance parameters (i.e. vibrato expression) of the Waseda Flutist Robot No.4 Refined IV (WF-4RIV) are to be manipulated. Our research is focused on enabling the WF-4RIV to interact with human players (musicians) in a natural way. In this paper, as a first approach, a vision processing algorithm, that is able to track the 3D-orientation and position of a musical instrument, was developed. In particular, the robot acquires image data through two cameras attached to its head. Using color histogram matching and a particle filter, the position of the musician's hands on the instrument are tracked. Analysis of this data determines orientation and location of the instrument. These parameters are mapped to manipulate the musical expression of the WF-4RIV, more specifically sound vibrato and volume values. We present preliminary experiments to determine if the robot may dynamically change musical parameters while interacting with a human player (i.e. vibrato etc.). From the experimental results, we may confirm the feasibility of the interaction during a performance, although further research must be carried out to consider the physical constraints of the flutist robot.

A state estimation algorithm for rejecting noise and tracking bias in both real-time and post-processing applications of inertial measurement for intermittent motion is presented with experimental results for one-dimensional motion. The algorithm uses characteristics of the sensor noise to automatically recognize motionless periods and update the sensor's bias level without any dependency on application-specific parameters, frequency separation between the signal of interest and the sensor noise, or a high-level system model. Accumulated error in the velocity estimate is eliminated during periods of rest allowing useful velocity estimates to be obtained for arbitrarily long periods given reasonably frequent pauses in the motion. This significantly extends the length of time over which useful position estimates are obtained, especially for post-processing applications. While derived and demonstrated in the context of inertial measurement, the algorithm can be used to reject noise and/or track bias drift for any signal where zero-level inputs occur intermittently and limits can be set on the noise amplitude, frequency, and bias drift rate.

In this study we propose a new approach to analyze data from the P300 speller paradigm using the quadratic B-spline wavelet coefficients and committee machines technique. Data set II from the BCI competition 2005 were used. The data were decomposed into five-octave frequency bands. We used coefficients between 4-8 Hz (theta) and 0.5-4 Hz (delta) frequency ranges as features. Extracted features used as inputs into committee machines (CM) based on LDA, MLP and SVM. This algorithm achieved an accuracy of 94% in P300 detection. We used only 7 electrodes of 64 recorded electrodes, Therefore it can noticeably reduce the time and cost of EEG measurement.

While the " 'quasi-state-of-the-art'" towards acoustic emotion recognition relies on multivariate time-series analysis of e.g. pitch, energy, or MFCC by statistical functionals as moments or extrema, only few respect statistical noise by outliers due to too long segments as turns. Such noise can be overcome by hierarchical functionals as means of extrema over smaller units as words or chunks. Segmentation of such units however usually relies on transcription. We therefore discuss hierarchical functionals based on automatic segmentation and their systematic generation as opposed to common expert-driven selection. To cope with rapidly growing feature spaces iquest5k, we discuss data-driven two-stage compression based on SVM- SFFS. Extensive test-runs are carried out on two known emotion and behavior corpora, and show superiority of the suggested approach.

Modeling realistic driving behavior at signalized intersections is crucial for many applications, for instance to determine the traffic signal performance, to assess the effect of different control strategies, or to estimate traffic emissions. In these applications, often microscopic models are used to simulate the trajectory of each vehicle. Despite the possibility to model vehicles with great detail and at fractions of a second, speed, acceleration and deceleration characteristics are determined by parameters that are rarely calibrated using real data, and default parameters are often chosen. This is because collecting real vehicle trajectories near traffic signals is a challenging task. This paper presents a method to collect such dataset using image processing techniques. This methodology allows one to obtain vehicle trajectories near a signal control, and to measure individual vehicles speeds and accelerations at a microscopic level. We focus on the analysis the empirical distributions of speeds and accelerations observed with this unique dataset near and up to a few meters upstream of the stop-sign. We compared these distributions with the results of repeated simulations of two microscopic software programs, using default parameters. Some inconsistencies were found with this comparison, which suggests that the two analyzed microscopic simulation programs run with default parameters do not provide realistic results for this type of road sections.

The recent years have witnessed a surge of interest in Graph-Based Semi-Supervised Learning (GBSSL). However, despite its extensive research, there has been little work on graph construction, which is at the heart of GBSSL. In this study, we propose a novel active learning method, Active Model Selection (AMS), which aims at learning both data labels and the optimal graph by allowing the learner the flexibility to choose samples for labeling. AMS minimizes the regularization function in GBSSL by iterating between the active sample selection step and the graph reconstruction step, where the samples querying which leads to the optimal graph are selected. Experimental results on four real-world datasets are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of AMS.

Using intelligent resource allocation based on the information content in the imaging system's field-of-view for the successful design of a flat-profile multiplexed optical imaging system requires the use of adaptive techniques. This paper describes a model-based technique for determining regions of interest in aerial images using the 2D normalized power spectral density within Gilles' saliency map estimator. The proposed technique exploits the 1/f alpha spatial spectral shape of such natural imagery in a computationally-simple approach that is robust to additive noise. Application of the method to candidate aerial images shows its ability to identify consistent regions of interest for such data.
