In this paper we present a people tracking algorithm which is able to detect and track soccer players in complex situations with varying light conditions, high frame rate, and real time processing. Object segmentation is performed by means of an algorithm based on background subtraction. In order to cope with presence of moving objects and light changes during the background modeling phase, an approach based on the evaluation of pixels energy content has been developed. Detected objects are then classified by means of an unsupervised clustering algorithm that allows the solution of blobs splitting and merging problems. For people tracking purpose we propose a stochastic approach based on the evaluation of the maximum a posteriori probability(MAP). First of all the algorithm evaluates geometrical information on the blob overlapping and then applies a color feature classification to track players and solve blob merging situations. Experimental tests have been carried out on long soccer image sequences in different weather and light conditions.

Digital signal controllers provide the unique combination of on-chip peripherals and computational power needed to implement motor control applications that range from aerospace, automobiles, medical, robotics, manufacturing, to home appliances. A system based on a single-chip digital controller allows designers to implement multiple functions such as a general motor drive algorithm, power factor correction scheme, and communications protocol etc. needed for overall motor drive systems. In addition to motor control, these controllers also integrate various analog modules to simplify overall system design. These digital controllers can be used as universal hardware platforms for motor drive applications. This reduces the overall system cost and also shortens the time to market. This paper presents a complete implementation of a three-phase PMSM drive and highlights the advantages of analog integration and how to comply with various international standards like IEC- 60730.

A DSP process-based equipment to diagnose the power quality of a single-phase power system is developed. The artificial-intelligent equipment diagnoses the transient, the voltage sag, the voltage swell and the THD among the power quality index of a power system. The 256 data sampled in a period of the single-phase voltage of the power system are used for the real-time calculation of RMS value, Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). The type of mother function for DWT is DB4. The data are measured at 154kV or 22.9kV substations for a year. The feature vectors extracted from the data are used to train the neural network for the artificial-intelligent diagnosis of power quality. The type of the activation function in the neural network is sigmoidal. After learning with the feature vectors, the back-propagation algorithm simulated in PSIM program and C ++ code generates the weights and biases of the neural network, which are used in the DSP320C6713-based Artificial-intelligent Power Quality Diagnosis Equipment (AIPQDE). The developed equipment detects satisfactorily the PQ problems in a real situation simulated in the laboratory.

This paper proposes a parallel architecture for a fast three step search (FTSS) algorithm, which is used in motion estimation. FTSS algorithm involves reduced number of search points and is thus less computationally expensive compared to the standard three step search (TSS) algorithm. Degradation of performance while applying the FTSS algorithm to several standard images has been shown to be insignificant compared to the standard TSS algorithm. The proposed architecture uses only three processing elements accompanied with use of intelligent data arrangement and memory configuration. A technique for reducing external memory accesses has also been developed. The proposed architecture for FTSS provides an efficient solution for applications requiring real-time motion estimations, because it requires smaller area and power than what would be required to implement TSS. The proposed architecture provides the solution for low bit-rate video applications like video telephony and teleconferencing.

This paper presents a method for the detection and the geo-localization of obstacle in outdoor environment. The proposed approach exploits a geographical 3D model managed by a 3D Geographical Information System (3D-GIS) and a video camera. An image processing module is developed to match synchronized real image and virtual image. The real image is provided by an on-board camera and gives the real view of the scene seen by the vehicle whereas the virtual image is provided by the 3D-GIS. A centimetric LRK GPS provides an estimation of the geo-position of the vehicle, which is used to localized the vehicle in the geographical 3D model. Obstacle(s) are then detected and tracked by comparison between the real image that contain the obstacle(s) and the virtual image where obstacle(s) are absent. The developed method permits also to compute the distance between the camera and obstacle(s), as well as the geo-position of these detected obstacles. In order to validate the computed distance, a 2D ladar (laser range scanner) is used. A necessary condition to complete the comparison is to calibrate the camera and the ladar together. Experimental results with real data are presented in the final section.

The recent researches in the realm of virtual learning environments have revealed how children can positively contribute in the design process. Comicboarding is a participatory designed method that involves the use of comic books and drawings to produce believable and engaging scenarios with children. Researchers can elicit ideas from children by leveraging known plot formats, interaction styles and characters in comics. The paper describes collaboration with children that enabled researchers to capture the stories and experiences children tell about persistently proliferating violent behaviour in the Japanese schools namely Ijime. This collaboration resulted in the design implications that helped in generating and appraising scenarios for a virtual edutainment environment populated by intelligent virtual agents for exploring the problem of Ijime. The objective was to generate comic-type summaries of these narratives for user-centered design that vocalizes children's voice in the technology process. The technique helped the investigators in examining story logs; gathering information related to personality and emotional characteristics of the characters; understanding their actions and importance in the narrative and selecting the key fabula for interactive narrative environment.

Microarray technology provides a tool for the simultaneous analysis of the expression level for an amount of genes. Microarray studies have been shown that image processing techniques can significantly influence microarray data precision. In this paper we propose a supervised method for the segmentation of microarray images based on classification techniques. Support Vector machine is employed to classify each pixel of the image into signal, background or artefacts. In addition, a preprocessing step is applied in order to filter the initial image. The proposed method is applied both to real and simulated images. The pixels of the image are classified in two classes for the real images and three classes for the simulated one. For this task, an informative set of features is used from both green and red channels. The results obtained indicate high accuracy (∼99%).

Discovering unknown adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in postmarketing surveillance as early as possible is of great importance. The current approach to postmarketing surveillance primarily relies on spontaneous reporting. It is passive and suffers from gross underreporting (<0% reporting rate), latency, and inconsistent reporting. We propose a novel team-based intelligent agent system approach for actively monitoring and detecting potential ADRs of interest using electronic patient records. We designed such a system and named it ADRMonitor. To evaluate the performance of the ADRMonitor with respect to the spontaneous reporting approach, we conducted simulation experiments on identification of ADR signal pairs (i.e., potential links between drugs and apparent adverse reactions) under various conditions. The experiments involved over 275,000 simulated patients created on the basis of more than 1,000 real patients treated by the drug cisapride that was on the market for seven years until its withdrawal by the FDA in 2000 due to serious ADRs. The quantitative simulation results show that (1) the ADR detection rate of the ADRMonitor agents with even moderate decision-making skills is 5 times higher than that of spontaneous reporting; (2) as the number of patient cases increases, ADRs could be detected significantly earlier by the ADRMonitor.

The process of segmenting images is one of the most critical ones in automatic image analysis whose goal can be regarded as to find what objects are presented in images. Artificial neural networks have been well developed. First two generations of neural networks have a lot of successful applications. Spiking neuron networks (SNNs) are often referred to as the 3 rd generation of neural networks which have potential to solve problems related to biological stimuli. They derive their strength and interest from an accurate modeling of synaptic interactions between neurons, taking into account the time of spike emission. SNNs overcome the computational power of neural networks made of threshold or sigmoidal units. Moreover, SNNs add a new dimension, the temporal axis, to the representation capacity and the processing abilities of neural networks. In this paper, we present how SNN can be applied with efficacy in image segmentation.
