Scheduling workloads on large-scale infrastructures, such as in the Edge-Cloud continuum is a challenging task. Usually, the scheduling algorithm considers only a limited sample of the infrastructure nodes, typically obtained through random sampling. The sampling reduces the number of nodes, which need to be evaluated in the scheduling pipeline, making the scheduling process more saleable. Unfortunately, current sampling approaches become largely inefficient when the infrastructure is heterogeneous and specific, scarce node characteristics are required to successfully execute a workload. computing continuum infrastructures are heterogeneous, hence, we need to re-think the sampling process to keep it viable at scale while also being able to identify and leverage the heterogeneity of the Edge-Cloud continuum resources. In this article, we present Intelligent Sampling - a novel technique for improving sampling in large-scale and heterogeneous infrastructures. We develop a model for any heterogeneous infrastructure. Based on this model, we provide a method to sample the infrastructure nodes more accurately, considering the specific task at hand. Finally, we leverage the Alibaba PAI dataset to show that our approach is 2.5x times more accurate compared with other state-of-the-art sampling mechanisms while retaining comparable performance and scalability.

With the rapid advancement of Internet of Vehicles technology, various in-vehicle applications requiring extensive data transmission and computational tasks have emerged. The vehicular edge caching system facilitates efficient content delivery for in-vehicle applications by storing content at roadside units, alleviating the load on backhaul links. However, the limited storage space of roadside units underscores the critical importance of formulating appropriate caching strategies. Considering the actual characteristics of the Internet of Vehicles scenario, we delve into the issue of user-centric content delivery. The problem of limited roadside unit collaborative caching replacement is modeled as a Markov decision process (MDP). A novel edge caching replacement algorithm (CR-DQN) based on Deep Q-Network is proposed to dynamically allocate and update the cached content of RSU in real time while ensuring service quality. The vast simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm proposed exhibits significant performance improvements in hit rate and payment costs compared to other baseline schemes.

Orchestrating microservices in geo-distributed Cloud-toEdge environments introduces challenges, particularly with maintaining response time SLOs due to network instability. Kubernetes, the standard for container orchestration, faces limitations in scheduling and descheduling when applied to such complex, distributed applications. Its default policies do not account for response time SLOs or the dynamic state of applications and infrastructure. This study proposes an enhancement to Kubernetes with a network SLO-aware scheduling and descheduling strategy, enabling adaptive placement based on the observed runtime application response times. Our approach is benchmarked against default Kubernetes scheduling policies to demonstrate its effectiveness.

As an innovative technical architecture, compute-storage network fusion has become a research focus by integrating various resources to provide efficient services for service applications. The article focuses on how to reasonably allocate and schedule resources to enhance system performance and efficiency, especially in the face of diverse application scenarios and complex service demands. We propose a compute-storage network fusion architecture oriented towards service priority scheduling, aiming to achieve rapid response and efficient processing of service to meet the needs of different priority service requests. This article discusses the current situation of the rapid increase in data volume and the growing demand for computing, storage, and network resources in the context of the rapid development of information technology. © 2024 ieee.

The growing need for applications that require significant computational power and high responsiveness has significantly driven the advancement of multi-access edge computing (MEC), with satellite edge computing (SEC) emerging as a formidable solution for regions where devices are marooned in areas with sparse computational resources. We present a study on enhancing task scheduling and resource allocation efficiency under the SEC framework, introducing a novel system model that simulates a heterogeneous network characterized by variable bandwidths, channel gains, and transmission powers. We propose a tailored SEC architecture that addresses stringent latency requirements and devise a dynamic scheduling method that adjusts task priorities based on urgency. Our experiments, grounded in realistic parameters from the Iridium and OneWeb satellite constellations, demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm. The findings underscore significant improvements in managing the SEC landscape, providing robust solutions that enhance overall system performance and reliability in global service networks.

Nowadays we are witnessing the diffusion of the Function-as-a-service paradigm, that has emerged due to its ability to deploy fine-grained units of computation on heterogeneous resources on-demand, reducing costs and improving resource utilization. In this work, we discuss our objective: extending the runtime support of a structured parallel programming framework, FastFlow, to empower it with the mechanisms needed to exploit FaaS functionalities. To achieve this objective, we also integrates workflows as a way to specify and describe, at a very high level of abstraction, the topology and the requirements of complex parallel data stream applications.

Increasing interest in distributed manufacturing systems is a result of the dynamic nature of today's business environment and with that comes the popularity of their use. This has given rise in the interest in distributed manufacturing systems. The indirect consequence of this has led to much higher use of distributed manufacturing systems. A large number of production processes, dispersed across a multitude of locations geographically separate, must be controlled and integrated in order to achieve production agility, flexibility and efficiency of costs. In our most recent project, we developed an integrated, collaborative manufacturing platform, the centerpiece of which was LAYMOD. To address the issues posed by such systems, this research presents a collateral and integrated platform based on a service oriented approach that can operate within the cloud computing paradigm. These systems present problems which the study is conducted in order to solve. Utilising the features of cloud computing, it aims to serve as a platform in solving process coordination and hence improving efficiency and scalability of distant manufacturing processes and potential real time communications among various stake holders. Furthermore, statistical research on the rates of platform module adoption in different settings provides specifics of (a) use patterns of some platform modules and (b) what capabilities are provided by some platform modules. When extrapolated to a wider size, our work is applied towards the creation of collaborative and integrated platforms for a number of the various manufacturing processes which are currently in use. © 2025 ieee.

Vehicle-To-Everything (V2X) applications challenge mobile networks with demanding Quality of service (QoS) requirements for high data rates and low latency. While Fifth Generation (5G) addresses these needs with enhanced bandwidth, low latency, and potential for V2X, mobility still impacts QoS despite 5G advancements. This study focuses on 5G's capacity to fulfill V2X QoS demands and introduces a Spatio-Temporal model for Predictive End-To-End (E2E) Latency, aligned with the The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard. Predicted latency is available upon request for specific geographic areas and timeframes. Our approach involves a two-step prediction process: forecasting latency at the radio level within cells using historical QoS parameters and interpolating E2E latency for new positions based on spatial latency distribution. An empirical measurement campaign validated our approach, demonstrating high accuracy in predicting user latency over an extended period.

Prioritizing security concerns in modern (micro)service-based applications is paramount to protecting sensitive data and maintaining end-user trust. Self-adaptation can strengthen security measures at runtime by autonomously adjusting the configuration and behavior of the managed system with limited, or even without, human intervention. In this paper, we present AQUA, a novel approach to orchestrate microservices jointly considering Quality of service (QoS) and vulnerabilities. The framework maintains an architectural model of the system at runtime expressed through a Discrete-Time Markov Chain (DTMC). Probabilistic model checking is then used to evaluate and compare alternative DTMCs to identify the adaptation actions that reduce security threats (reducing the attack surface preventively) while increasing the delivered QoS (availability and response time). We evaluate the cost-effectiveness of AQUA using a microservice application benchmark. We show that the framework outperforms existing baseline methods by consistently planning better adaptation decisions that consider QoS and security aspects. However, this comes with higher computational costs, which increase linearly with the problem size.

The growing interest in the Internet of Things (IoT) has prompted a more innovative architectural design approach and evolutionary frameworks to integrate heterogeneous IoT devices better. Edge computing, which provides services close to end-user devices without requiring high-speed Internet connectivity, has become a popular paradigm for reducing network congestion and allowing real-time Internet of Things applications. However, the heterogeneous and resource-constrained edge nodes make it difficult to design edge computing frameworks. However, because the edge computing environment is dynamic, with irregular connections and limited bandwidth, it's critical to deal with the challenge of determining the relative performance of applications deployed in the edge computing paradigm when input traffic, networking protocols, or system software changes. So, this paper explores three software architectures, namely monolithic architecture, microservices architecture (MSA), and service-oriented architecture (SOA), providing a framework for edge computing's many requirements. A comparative analysis of these three software architectures is also covered based on the fundamental characteristics of an edge computing framework. © 2024 ieee.
