Cloud combined with Multi-Access Edge computing (MEC) empowers service creators and application developers with promising architectural design and communication performance improvements. In fifth generation (5G) and in 6G cellular networks, MEC gains more importance as a service platform to enable new applications. However, as of today, the availability of MEC resources in public networks is still low, thus not much communication performance measurement data exists. In this work, we use our private, city-level 5G test bed, to evaluate the end-to-end communication performance to different edge and cloud endpoints through realistic outdoor field tests. Multiple topological locations of the edge service are evaluated, the network is operated in stand-alone (SA) and non-stand-alone (NSA) modes, and two-way as well as one-way latency measurements with multiple traffic patterns are performed. The measurements are executed in different environmental settings: fixed position and drive tests, including 5G cell hand-overs. The results not only demonstrate the performance benefits gained from MEC resources, but also show the impact of the communication system and user mobility to Quality of service (QoS) parameters. Especially for different traffic patterns and for the performance during our drive tests, our results show the time overhead required for exchanging data, which may be challenging for service lookups or delay-constrained applications.

This study developed a cellular automaton model to investigate queuing systems with dedicated lanes for people requiring longer service times. The simulation results showed that the queue configuration has a significant impact on queue processing when a large number of people visit the queue at a steady rate. The results also revealed that the use of dedicated lanes for people with longer service times can improve waiting times and service order fairness. However, to maintain queue processing efficiency, the number of dedicated lanes for people with longer service times must be appropriately set based on their proportion among all people. © 2023 ieee.

service-oriented Architecture (SOA) promotes the use of modular., reusable., and interoperable services. This paper talks about the difficult problems in keeping systems that use SOA. One challenge is when there are different versions of services working at the same time and can cause problems because they might not work well together. Another challenge is making sure that services can adjust to new requirements while still working correctly. The complicated task of handling how services depend on each other in a changing and growing environment is discussed in this paper. This paper talks about the difficulties in keeping SOA systems working well and measures how easy it is to maintain those using different practical aspects. It looks at groups that focus on the quality of software and examines metrics (measurements) related to how easy it is to maintain the SOA. Paper also discusses regular ways of fixing and taking care of SOA and explores how soft computing technique is used in these situations. © 2024 ieee.

Edge computing (EC) allows users to access computing resources at the network frontier, which paves the way for deploying delay-sensitive applications such as Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR). Under the EC paradigm, MAR users connect to the EC server, open sessions and send continuously frames to be processed. The EC server sends back virtual information to enhance the human perception of the world by merging it with the real environment. Resource allocation arises as a critical challenge when several MAR service Providers (SPs) compete for limited resources at the edge of the network. In this paper, we consider EC in a multi-tenant environment where the resource owner, i.e., the Network Operator (NO), virtualizes the resources and lets SPs run their services using the allocated slice of resources. Indeed, for MAR applications, we focus on two specific resources: CPU and RAM, deployed in some edge node, e.g., a central office. We study the decision of the NO about how to partition these resources among several SPs. We model the arrival and service dynamics of users belonging to different SPs using Erlang queuing model and show that under perfect information, the interaction between the NO and SPs can be formulated as a sub-modular maximization problem under multiple Knapsack constraints. To solve the problem, we use an approximation algorithm, guaranteeing a bounded gap with respect to the optimal theoretical solution. Our numerical results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms baseline proportional allocation in terms of the number of sessions accommodated at the edge for each SP.

The computing Continuum drives holistic system integration, especially in the road sector, where there's a growing need for comprehensive Decision Support Systems in operation and maintenance strategies based on sensor data. These systems offer dynamic assessments, critical for managing road assets vulnerable to climate change and extreme weather events. The resulting data uncertainties, including variations in data veracity and variability require timely decision-making for coordination and adaptiveness of the system as a whole. We introduce an urgent computing architecture for a dynamic risk management framework, discussing its related challenges and software design patterns.

The steady rollout of Industrial IoT (IIoT) technology in the manufacturing domain embodies the potential to implement smarter and more resilient production processes. To this end, it is expected that there will be a strong reliance of manufacturing processes on cloud/edge services so as to act intelligently and flexibly. While automation is necessary to handle the environment's complexity, human-in-the-loop design approaches are paramount. In this context, Digital Twins play a crucial role by allowing human operators to inspect and monitor the environment to ensure stability and reliability. Integrating the IIoT with the Metaverse enhances the system's capabilities even further, offering new opportunities for efficiency and collaboration while enabling integrated management of assets and processes. This article presents a layered conceptual architecture as an enabler for smart manufacturing metaverse environments, targeting real-time data collection and representations from shopfloor assets and processes. At the bottom layer, our proposal relies on middleware technology, serving differentiated Quality of service (QoS) needs of the Operation Technology (OT) monitoring processes. The latter contributes to feeding a virtual layer where data processes reside, creating representations of the monitored phenomena at different timescales. Metaverse applications can consume data by tapping into the metaverse engine, a microservice-oriented and accelerated Platform as a service (PaaS) layer tasked with bringing data to life. Without loss of generality, we profile different facets of our proposal by relying on two different proof-of-concept inspection applications aimed at real-time monitoring of the network fabric activity and a visual asset monitoring one. © 2023 ieee.

A paradigm known as 'Fog computing' makes use of the benefits that come from using both cloud and edge devices to help contemporary computer systems by lowering latency, enhancing mobility, offering quality services, and supporting many tenants. Fog collaboration or fogging are other names for it. This study discusses and evaluates cloud computing, giving a brief overview of the concepts that were in use earlier than fog computing. Cloud, mobile edge computing, and mobile cloud computing are some of these concepts. Enhancing the standard of service's between end devices & cloud itself was goal of all the models. A fog-based computer Based on recent research on fog computing security difficulties, service issue's, Operational challenges, and information Management, a taxonomy is proposed. The foundation of the Standard for clarifying taxonomy is essential & practical problems with Fog computing. Potential applications & challenges are noted. The research reveals that among the contributions from scholars, safety, confidentiality, usage, and communication refers to are frequently mentioned. There are additional identified potential uses for fog computing, such as creative city applications, healthcare applications & agricultural applications. © 2024 ieee.

In the multiple unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mobile edge computing (MEC) systems, the cooperative computation among multiple UAVs can improve the overall computation service capability. Multi-UAV MEC systems can meet the quality of service requirements for computation intensive applications of ground terminals (GTs) in complex field environments, emergency disaster relief and other special scenarios. In this paper, a multi-UAV cooperative computation framework is proposed while taking the GT movement and random arrival of computation tasks into consideration. A long-term optimization problem is formulated for the joint optimization of UAV trajectory and resource allocation, subject to minimizing the total GT computation task completion time and the total system energy consumption. To solve this problem, a joint multiple time-scale optimization algorithm is proposed. In particular, the optimization problem is decomposed into a long time-scale multi-UAV trajectory planning subproblem and a short time-scale resource allocation subproblem. The proximal policy optimization algorithm is invoked to solve the long time-scale subproblem. The greedy algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA) method are employed to solve the short time-scale subproblem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can quickly adapt to different degrees of environmental dynamics and outperforms the benchmark algorithm for different task requirements and available resources.

Fog computing is emerging as geo-distributed and connected edge-to-cloud ecosystems, spanning multiple domains operated by different entities. Consequently, fog-compatible applications need to support distributed operations and decentralized management. This promoted the adoption of the microservices architecture, to facilitate application modularity and autonomy. Transitioning to fog-native applications, i.e., running distributed microservice workflows over multiple domains, is a challenging endeavor. On one hand, distributing workflows require awareness of the intents and dependencies of microservices, as this may impact the supply of data and the perceived Quality of service (QoS). On the other hand, the variant capacities and energy supply, coupled with limited information-sharing across fog autonomies, hinders the prospect of end-to-end optimization. To tackle such problems, we propose a novel federate optimisation algorithm for multi-domain scheduling of fog-native microservice workflows. The algorithm incorporates workflow intents in decision-making by combining Bender's decomposition with Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to provide optimized workflow placement, mapping, routing and admission. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated analytically and compared to state-of-the-art intent-based ADMM (iADMM). The results show performance trade-offs with the proposed iBADMM (direct), with the latter improving the fraction of workflow greenness by approximate to 15%.
