The development of quantum computing has caught the attention of businesses that could profit from implementing quantum software. Given this, it is not out of the question that in the coming years, hybrid systems will begin to emerge, merging together both the traditional software systems of organization and new quantum ones, giving solutions to difficulties that are today intractable. service oriented computing (soc) is a logical technique to facilitate such integration. There are some conceptual similarities between calling on a classical service and calling on a quantum service, but there are significant technological differences. This research uses the amazon braket quantum service platform and a well-known problem with a quantum solution to highlight these distinctions and the difficulties inherent in developing high-quality quantum services (integer factorization). To practice providing the factorization as a quantum service, we perform the exercise. This case study illustrates the challenges associated with adopting service-oriented computing for integrating hybrid systems based on classical and quantum principles. After conducting this study, we were able to make suggestions on where to place effort in order to bring about the most effective realization of quantum service-oriented computing. © 2024 ieee.

Serverless edge computing is emerging as an enabler to provision scalable and flexible Function-as-a-service (FaaS) applications with lightweight function instances at network edge. In serverless edge computing, the function instances with inter-dependencies are scheduled to proximate edge nodes in a distributed manner. However, the heterogeneity and unpredictability of edge networks bring significant challenge in realizing optimal scheduling decision to guarantee execution performance of applications without any prior. In view of this challenge, a Serverless Function Scheduling Method, named SFSM, is proposed in this paper for FaaS applications over edge computing. First, a long-term optimization problem is formulated to reduce completion time and decoupled into time-slot sub-problems via Lyapunov optimization. To avoid the cross-edge redundant data transmission overhead of inter-functions, a two-level graph optimization is designed with vertical and horizontal data merging. Then, SFSM incorporates an online multi-armed bandit-based scheduling algorithm that only requires the context of requests without complete information of edge networks. Finally, extensive experimental results based on real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of SFSM.

Edge computing has become a popular paradigm where services and applications are deployed at the network edge closer to the data sources. It provides applications with outstanding benefits, including reduced response latency and enhanced privacy protection. For emerging advanced applications, such as autonomous vehicles, industrial IoT, and metaverse, further research is needed. This is because such applications demand ultra-low latency, hyper-connectivity, and dynamic and reliable service provision, while existing approaches are inadequate to address the new challenges. Hence, we envision that the future edge computing is moving towards distributed intelligence, where heterogeneous edge nodes collaborate to provide services in large-scale and geo-distributed edge infrastructure. We thereby propose Edge-as-a-service (EaaS) to enable distributed intelligence. EaaS jointly manages large-scale cross-node edge resources and facilitates edge autonomy, edge-to-edge collaboration, and resource elasticity. These features enable flexible deployment of services and ubiquitous computation and intelligence. We first give an overview of existing edge computing studies and discuss their limitations to articulate the motivation for proposing EaaS. Then, we describe the details of EaaS, including the physical architecture, proposed software framework, and benefits of EaaS. Various application scenarios, such as real-time video surveillance, smart building, and metaverse, are presented to illustrate the significance and potential of EaaS. Finally, we discuss several challenging issues of EaaS to inspire more research towards this new edge computing framework.

Despite the widespread adoption of Web services in modern computing applications, there remains a lack of a systematic approach that can guide service developers in creating appealing services. This paper addresses this gap by presenting findings from a comprehensive study of RapidAPI web services, the largest service marketplace, and their integration into GitHub-hosted applications. We collected data on over 16K RapidAPI services and 19K corresponding GitHub repositories invoking these services, evaluating each service based on metrics such as latency, reliability, pricing, community support, and provider support. Our analysis examines how these metrics influence service popularity and usage patterns on GitHub. We manually analyzed 800 GitHub repositories and identified developers' service selection preferences and integration patterns, considering alternative services and their features. Additionally, we classified GitHub developers based on proficiency levels to understand how developers' levels of proficiency impact their service selection and integration strategies. Our findings offer insights for service marketplaces to recommend integration-friendly services and for service developers to create offerings tailored to real-world application needs.

Implementing, managing and updating large-scale complex IoT applications is still a non-trivial challenge. service oriented Architectures (SOA) are increasingly used for this purpose, given their well-defined communication interfaces and configurable service-to-service links that ease the implementation of complex data flows. However, these architectures usually stop at the edge, not supporting far-edge resource-constrained devices. This paper proposes embServe, a new service-oriented framework that enables SOA on networks of constrained devices. It allows users to deploy services compiled independently of the base application and configure their connections using standard IoT protocols and data models. We compared a reference implementation against traditional approaches. Results show that embServe reduces resource overhead with a subtle impact on computing performance while improving application response time and uptime.

Many web services are often latency-sensitive, have high network capabilities, and have computing resource limitations, as demonstrated by deep neural network (DNN) model-based web applications. In this work, a DNN model-based web application providing visual cognitive services is implemented and explored to address latency-sensitive problems, taking into account the broad practicability and importance of web object recognition tasks in intelligent applications and modern systems. We propose a collaborative architecture of end-user, edge server, and cloud server, employing a binary offloading strategy to reduce the upload rate of images while ensuring good detection performance, thereby reducing the response time. Detection scenario-oriented data augmentation is carried out on the dataset to improve detection accuracy. Finally, we compare the performance of the proposed approach with traditional object recognition services running entirely on the cloud. The experimental results show that the detection scenario-oriented strategy significantly improves the detection accuracy of fine-trained YOLOv5 models on the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset. Compared with the traditional cloud-based architecture, the proposed edge-cloud collaboration architecture can detect more objects and reduce response time efficiently.

With the deepening of the digital transformation of power systems, new service scenarios such as computing power access and interconnection are continuously developing. The electric power communication network urgently needs to evolve to comprehensively carry the existing services and new computing services. This paper analyzes the typical service scenarios and performance characteristics of new power systems against the development of computing services, summarizes the evolution demands faced by the electric power communication network. In response to the demand for comprehensive carrying of multiple services, the paper proposes a computing application oriented overall evolutionary architecture for the power communication network, and proposes key technologies such as all-optical interconnection based on OTN/OSU, multi-dimensional perception of computing and network, deterministic bearing, and intelligent collaborative operation and maintenance of computing and network. This paper can provide solid strategic suggestions for the future design and technological evolution of the electric power communication network oriented to computing services. © 2024 ieee.

Edge computing and Internet of Things (IoT) avail a technological environment where everybody (human, objects) can join the internet to process, store, collect and exchange data from the surrounding environment. Embedding of large scale IoT applications to the network of distributed computational resources has become a challenging part of the edge-cloud continuum paradigm. Due to the high distance between the local devices and the cloud, there would be an issue for latency sensitive and energy-intensive applications like healthcare (i.e., patient remote monitoring, wearable health devices), and AR/VR. The edge computing paradigm resolves these challenges by providing data resources and services closer to data sources and end devices at the network's edge. This research will focus on investigating challenges and issues for the combined multi-tier orchestration in edge-cloud continuum consisting of local edge nodes, edge servers and cloud servers with emphasis on future 6G systems. The PhD research will focus on resource and QoS-aware IoT application deployment and resource orchestration in local edge-cloud continuum three-tier architecture in 6G.

When deploying machine learning (ML) applications, the automated allocation of computing resources - commonly referred to as autoscaling - is crucial for maintaining a consistent inference time under fluctuating workloads. The objective is to maximize the Quality of service metrics, emphasizing performance and availability, while minimizing resource costs. In this paper, we compare scalable deployment techniques across three levels of scaling: at the application level (TorchServe, RayServe) and the container level (K3s) in a local environment (production server), as well as at the container and machine levels in a cloud environment (Amazon Web services Elastic Container service and Elastic Kubernetes service). The comparison is conducted through the study of mean and standard deviation of inference time in a multi-client scenario, along with upscaling response times. Based on this analysis, we propose a deployment strategy for both local and cloud-based environments.

With the increased usage of public clouds for hosting applications, it becomes essential to choose the appropriate services from the public cloud offerings in order to achieve satisfactory performance while minimizing deployment expenses. Prior research has demonstrated that combining different services can be more cost-effective than solutions based on a single service type. However, automating the combination of resources for applications composed of large graphs of loosely-connected microservices has not yet been thoroughly explored, especially in the context of microservice-based cloud applications. Motivated by this, targeting microservice-based applications, we propose MicroBlend, an automated framework that mixes Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and Function-as-a-service (FaaS) cloud services in a way that is both cost-effective and performance-efficient. MicroBlend focuses on: (i) providing an automated approach for blending resources that takes microservice dependencies into account, (ii) generating FaaS-ready code using a compiler-based approach, and (iii) suggesting an optimization plan for combining microservices with user annotation. We implement MicroBlend on Amazon Web services (AWS) and evaluate its performance using real-world traces from three different applications. Our findings demonstrate that by employing automated microservice-to-cloud service assignment, MicroBlend can significantly reduce service Level Objective (SLO) violations by 9%, compared to traditional VM-based resource procurement schemes. Additionally, MicroBlend can decrease costs by 11%.
