In the twenty-first century, many technologies and applications have been developed to support the digital learning environment for teachers and students either physically in class or virtually at home. The need has increased due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, as students must join online teaching and learning at home either they are at primary, secondary, or tertiary levels. Since the requirements are different according to the level of education, some educational applications are not suitable and complicated for lower education levels. Considering various users' needs, persona-based approach has been used in many studies to elicit users' requirements and derive diverse scenarios from user personas before moving to implementation stage. Thus, this case study proposes a persona-based approach to identify students' goals or needs, pains or challenges besides their satisfaction when using educational application prototypes. It involved eight prototypes for learning Computer science topics and 29 secondary school students. The findings conclude how the persona-based approach can be used to investigate diverse users' needs, challenges, and scenarios as the inputs to design educational applications with digital contents or e-contents for specific topics or subjects. © 2021 ieee.

Synthetic Aperture Focusing (SAFT) is one of the methods to improve the spatial resolution in the traditional acoustics field. Its basic principle is to combine a series of small-aperture sensors to replace a large-aperture sensor in order to improve the detection lateral resolution. However, the practical detection results will be affected by noise. In this paper, the time-domain B-scan signal is obtained by establishing a physical model of a lead sample containing defects and computing with finite element method. Then, the influence of noise with different signal-tonoise ratio(SNR) on SAFT imaging results is studied. The results show that SAFT algorithm has better anti-noise performance, and can still obtain good results even when the SNR is low.

A futuristic infrastructure model is envisioned with distributed modules that can produce solar energy, have a storage system and provide services of lighting, electric-vehicle charging and communications. A stochastic model is formulated for the solar power production and overall consumption of power. Resource allocation in such a system translates to taking decisions in a foresighted manner while maximizing a social surplus with the goal of serving all power demands optimally. A stochastic dynamic programming approach is formulated for the same and a myopic policy is illustrated while discussing the trade-offs between serving competing demands.

Photovoltaic energy from renewable sources is becoming more prevalent nowadays, as part of the process of converting this energy to AC voltage and feeding it into the power grid network, the output voltage or injected current total harmonic distortion (THD) should be low, usually below 5 %. This unwanted distortion can lead to increased current in the PV inverter resulting in higher temperature and additional energy loss. To suppress injected grid current THD, an advanced controller, i.e. a proportional resonant (PR) control design is commonly used. In this work, we report an approach to optimally select parameters (K p , K i and W c for this controller to suppress the THD, reduce leakage current, and ensure a unity power factor operation in the system. The control algorithm is implemented in an integrated digital signal processing evaluation board from TI - TMS320F28335 eZdsp board. In this paper, both simulation and experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in reducing the injected current THD through the development of 500 W micro-inverter prototype as a case study.

electricity theft causes significant harm to social and economic development. In the past few years, it has attracted much attention that electricity theft detection based on electricity consumption data can help to solve this problem. A major challenge is that there are no explicit features in electricity consumption records. However, the existing machine learning-based detection methods mainly suffer from the following two disadvantages. (1) Handcrafted features and shallow-architecture classifiers have poor detection accuracy. (2) Most methods consider electricity consumption as static and cannot capture both the internal time-series natures and external influence factors well. To overcome the above shortcomings, we propose a novel method called electricity Theft Detection using Deep Bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network (eTD-DBRNN), which can capture the internal characteristics and the external correlation by learning the electricity consumption records and influence factors representation. experiments on real-world datasets validate the effectiveness of our method.

Modern cloud vendors provide thousands of types of virtual machines, presenting the user a bewildering choice. Many previous works try to train accurate models for a workload to predict its performance on a given configuration, which could be applicable to a concrete class of workloads (e.g., Spark-SVM jobs). But it is difficult to build a universal prediction model for all the workloads, mostly because different workloads have different runtime metrics distribution. We argue that if the runtime metrics data could be transferred before being fed to the prediction model, the knowledge learned in one workload may be reused to other workloads. In this paper, we synthetically investigate the similarity and difference between a set of workloads and the possibility to transfer between them. We use an LSTM auto-encoder to encode the temporal runtime metrics into a fixed-size vector, which is fed into a linear regression model. In our experiments, the metrics transferring approach could help reduce the prediction error of the linear regression model.

The rapid development of information and communication technology has made great advancements to grid structure, but at the same time it has also brought new security and privacy challenges to smart grid. Metering data transmitted in insecure public networks are vulnerable to eavesdropping and tampering by other organizations or users. Also, smart meters exposed to the outside could be physically attacked. Many privacy-preserving authentication schemes in smart grid have been proposed in recent years. However, most of them cannot protect smart meters from physical attacks. In this paper, a new lightweight privacy-preserving authenticated data collection scheme (PAC) based on Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) is proposed. With the uniqueness property of PUFs, the proposed scheme can not only resist physical attacks, but also support key sharing and identity authentication. Security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can guarantee the privacy of users and resist traditional attacks such as man-in-the-middle attacks, replay attacks, impersonation attacks and physical attacks. experimental performance indicates that the proposed scheme has high efficiency and low interaction.

In order to provide highly accessible and efficient computing capacities and services, fog nodes in the fog computing are geographically distributed near end-users. Normally, a single fog node cannot provide sufficient capacities to deploy services because of its own limited resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel approach aggregating resources of fog nodes: multiple fog nodes are assumed to be one resource node hosting virtual machine where services could be deployed. Our proposed approach can be decomposed into two phases: i) seeking suitable fog nodes, where we formulate the corresponding overhead computation models in terms of data transmission latency and rental cost, to balance the minimum data transmission latency and the low rental cost, and ii) achieving enough fog nodes, where we propose a novel Fog node Selection algorithm based on Simulated Annealing to meet resource requirements of a single service while minimizing the overheads of the end-users. experimental results show that the proposed approach performs better than existing start-of-theart peers in terms of data transmission latency and rental cost while meeting resource requirements of services.

In the past few years, the first commercially available quantum computers have emerged, in an early stage of development, the so-called Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. Although these devices are still very prone to errors of different natures, they also have shown to deal successfully with small computational problems. Nowadays, one of the challenges in quantum computation is exactly to be able to show that quantum computers are useful, whereby mitigating the effects of the faulty hardware is pivotal. Recently, a wide range of quantum error mitigation techniques have been proposed and successfully implemented, alternative to quantum error correction codes. Herein, we discuss several types of noise in a quantum computer and techniques available to mitigate them, as well as their limitations and conditions of applicability. We also suggest an hierarchy for them, towards the conception of a layered software framework of error mitigation techniques, and implement some of them in a quantum simulation of the Heisenberg model on an IBM quantum computer, improving the fidelity of the simulation by 2.8x.

Mobile edge computing (MeC) platform allows its subscribers to utilize computational resource in close proximity to reduce the computation latency. In this paper, we consider two users each has a set of computation tasks to execute. In particular, one user is a registered subscriber that can access the computation service of MeC platform, while the other unregistered user cannot directly access the MeC service. In this case, we allow the registered user to receive computation offloading from the unregistered user, compute the received task(s) locally or further offload to the MeC platform, and charge a fee that is proportional to the computation workload. We study from the registered user's perspective to maximize its total utility that balances the monetary income and the cost on execution delay and energy consumption. We formulate a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problem that jointly decides the execution scheduling of the computation tasks (i.e., the device where each task is executed) and the computation/communication resource allocation. To tackle the problem, we first derive the closed-form solution of the optimal resource allocation given the integer task scheduling decisions. We then propose a reduced-complexity approximate algorithm to optimize the combinatorial computation scheduling decisions. Simulation results show that the proposed collaborative computation scheme effectively improves the utility of the helper user compared with other benchmark methods, and the proposed solution method approaches the optimal solution within 0.1% average performance gap with significantly reduced complexity.
