The classical approaches to teach the controlsystems present drawbacks, such as: (i) the general overview of the problem is sometimes underemphasized by the knowledge acquisition; (ii) they mainly use the academic examples that are only dealing with simple concepts and problems; (iii) laboratory experiments are either simple or under developed. design aspects of controlsystems when applied to practical processes are important to improve the knowledge of the students and to motivate the utilization of modern methodologies as an emergent technology for the applications in industry. In this work, we point out some important aspects for conceiving a new educational product. We describe our experiences in creating a didactic environment for teaching and learning the control theories in engineering courses based on CACSD (computeraidedcontrolsystemdesign) and its extension to the research field of industrial problems. Two distinct proposals arise from these experiences for reducing the gap between the theoretical and practical classes, and for teaching the controlsystems development cycle using mathematical tools and real plants under the virtual instrumentation concept.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a sine-output ROM-less direct digital frequency synthesiser by using a polynomial approximation of which a maximum error less than 2e-4 can be achieved for phase values between 0 to /spl pi//2. The full-period sinewave is generated by using a quadrant-decode technique. This yields a very high spectral purity sinewave output. system-level approximation and experimental results using an FPGA show that the maximum harmonic distortion is less than -67.4 dBc and -64.8 dBc respectively.

The speed or the position synchronization is required for some industrial equipments, such as rolling machine and gantry crane, driven by the servo-motor driver in order to carry the cooperative job. When we design the synchronizing controller by using the commercial servo-amp, it is necessary to obtain its system parameters which are generally unknown. In this paper, the equivalent model of the commercial servo-amp system is verified by using the frequency characteristics between speed command and output speed. And, also, we designed H/spl infin/ controller from the obtained model of servo-amp and its performance is compared with that of conventional mater-slave method by the computer simulation using Matlab.

This paper focuses on the analog VLSI design of a reduced KII set and network, which are basic building blocks in the computational model of the olfactory cortex proposed by Walter Freeman. Previous implementation issues were discussed in 2001, but this paper will present recent developments in the circuit design of individual blocks in a reduced KII set as well as a system architecture for the KII network. The coupling coefficients are built into the chip and the shape of the nonlinear block is controlled externally. To improve the efficiency of the nonlinear block and to reduce the problem of massive interconnections in the KII network, a mixed-signal design to multiplex nonlinear blocks is proposed. Simulation results and chip measurement are presented for the reduced KII set.

This paper presents a novel VLSI architecture for a fully parallel static type content addressable memory with low-power, low-voltage, and high-reliability features. In this paper, the proposed CAM word structure adopts a static pseudo nMOS circuit that not only improves system reliability, but also prevents using a clock signal to drive the overall system. In order to reduce static power occurring in the proposed CAM word structure, a precomputation approach is used to turn off a major part of the pseudo nMOS circuits. The whole design was simulated by HSPICE with the TSMC 0.35 /spl mu/m SPQM CMOS process. With a 128 words by 30 bits CAM size, the simulation results indicate that the proposed circuit operates up to 250 MHz with a power-performance metric less than 59 fJ/bit/search.

There has recently been a trend in requirements engineering towards combining techniques in order to complement the deficiencies of one with the strengths of another. RESCUE is a process that continues this tradition and combines human activity modelling and i* system goal modelling in a concurrent engineering approach to support the generation of more complete and correct use case models and descriptions, and hence better requirements. The process is aimed at developing large socio-technical systems where confidence in the correctness and completeness of use cases, and hence requirements, is important. The RESCUE process has been applied and tested in the specification of requirements for CORA-2, a real and large-scale socio-technical system in which computerised assistance will be provided to air traffic controllers.

This paper addresses recent developments of circular line-scan imaging system for applications of 3D scene visualization and/or reconstruction. Such an imaging system is characterized by rotating linear sensors capturing one image column at a time respectively. This allows for accurate mappings onto a cylindrical image surface and very high image resolutions paid by motion distortions in dynamic scenes. These images can be used, for example, for stereo visualization and 3D reconstruction in the VR applications where extremely high image resolution is of benefit (for static scenes). The paper elaborates the basic geometry, the geometric analysis, and the design and control of imaging parameters to ensure high-quality 3D data acquisition.

An advanced reconfigurable controller improved by a multiple model architecture is proposed as a tool to achieve fault tolerance in complex nonlinear systems. The most complete adaptive critic design, Globalized Dual Heuristic Programming (GDHP), constitutes a highly flexible nonlinear adaptive controller responsible for the generation of new control solutions for novel plant dynamics introduced by unknown faults. Working on a higher hierarchical level, the proposed supervisor makes use of two quality indexes to perform fault detection, identification and isolation based on the knowledge stored in a dynamic model bank. In the event of abrupt known faults, such knowledge is then used to greatly reduce the reconfiguration time of the GDHP controller. The synergy of the proposed supervisor and GDHP goes beyond, as solutions designed by the controller to previously unknown faults are autonomously added to the model bank. The fine interrelations among the algorithm's subsystems are illustrated in a rich numerical simulation of a MIMO nonlinear system subject to different fault scenarios.
