This paper shows how a class of objective functions can be incorporated into a prioritised, multi-objective optimisation problem, for which a solution can be obtained by solving a sequence of single-objective, constrained, convex programming problems. The objective functions considered in this paper typically arise in Model Predictive control (MPC) of constrained, linear systems. The framework presented in this paper can be used to design a flexible, multi-objective MPC controller that takes priorities into account during the on-line computation of the control input.

In this paper, we propose a new controller design method, where the identification technique, which directly acquires any order of reduced model, is applied to the feedforward controller design composed of time delays and inverse dynamics of a controlled object. By applying the proposed controller, the tracking error with reference signal of the N-th power of t becomes zero when the future reference signal is available. The resulting system has neither deterioration in the feedback characteristics nor increase in the tuning man-hour because feedforward controllers do not affect the feedback characteristics and the feedback controller can be designed with the accumulated know-how.

This paper considers the problem of generating LFT-based uncertainty models for the robustness analysis of the HIRM+ aircraft using the structured singular value mu. Robustness properties of the RIDE controller are evaluated according to criteria currently in use by the European aircraft industry for the clearance of flight control laws. The proposed analysis approach is shown to be both rigorous and efficient, and demonstrates increased potential for automation of the flight clearance task.

The presence of flexibility in automotive drivelines, coupled with nonlinear elements such as gear lash leads to the presence of an undesirable oscillatory response to step changes in throttle input. This oscillation is generally low frequency (approximately 2 to 5 kHz) and can be of sufficient amplitude to cause driver discomfort and subjective disappointment with the driveability of the vehicle. A pole placement controller is developed for a "drive by wire" (electronically operated throttle) system, with the objective of reducing or eliminating the oscillatory response. Due to the inherent nonlinearities present in the system and the various constraints which must be applied to the controller design, the polynomial values for the pole placement controller are selected by the application of multi objective optimisation.

In this paper, a library of Adaptive Neural Networks to be used within the Simulink(R) environment is presented. The library has been developed by the authors with the intent of giving to the Simulink user an easy access to a variety of adaptive approximators. The Neural Networks contained in the library are ready to be used and interchanged within the user's application. Differently from existing neural network collections and toolboxes, in this library, a Neural Network is strictly treated as a dynamic system with its inputs, outputs and states, and the "dynamics" of the approximation process is therefore considered as an essential part of this "system". In the following, the library is introduced and the featured network architectures are analyzed in detail. Finally, as an example, a comparison is performed between two of the presented networks.

In this paper a method is presented for deriving the explicit robust model-based optimal control law for constrained linear dynamic systems. The controller underlying structure is derived off-line via parametric programming before any actual process implementation takes place. The proposed control scheme guarantees feasibility under the presence of uncertainties and disturbances, and steady state offset elimination by (i) augmenting the model dynamics with a set of integral states and (ii) explicitly incorporating in the design stage a set of feasibility constraints.

In this paper a HVAC system consisting of the thermal and ventilation subsystem and the lighting subsystem is analyzed in detail. The objective of this work is the development of an integrated controlsystem, whose aim is to optimize the energy consumption and the user comfort. The focus of the first part of this work is on the analysis of the different subsystems. The entire controlsystem is described in detail. The cross coupling, which links the thermal system with the lighting system, is specified. This allows a separation of the control algorithms according to the requirements. The core objective of this paper is the design of several intelligent thermal control algorithms. An algorithm using a Fuzzy controller and an adapting power profile, a controller which uses the same algorithm as mentioned before but which optimizes the Fuzzy controller parameters using Genetic Algorithms and a generalized predictive controller (GPC) are presented. Different aspects of the control strategies, the diverse specifications of the algorithms and any restrictions concerning the implementation are listed. Last but not least simulation results of different controllers are presented and discussed.

This paper presents a new approach to verifying properties of computercontrolsystems with periodic sampling when the control programs include both continuous-variable computations and discrete-state transitions (mode switching). We focus on the novel aspects of the approach, which are (1) a formal model for hybrid systems with continuous-time and discretetime behaviors and (2) a method for computing conservative approximations to the sets of reachable states. The formal model and computational routines are incorporated into CheckMate, a MATLAB-based tool for verification of properties of hybrid dynamic systems. This tool is being applied to the verification of embedded controllers in automotive engines.

Explicit piecewise linear state feedback solutions to the constrained linear model predictive control problem has recently been characterized and computed numerically using multiparametric quadratic programming. The piecewise linear state feedback is defined on a polyhedral partitioning of the state space, which may be quite complex. Here we suggest an approximate multi-parametric quadratic programming approach, which has the advantages that the partition is structured as a binary search tree. This leads to real-time computation of the piecewise linear state feedback with a computational complexity that is logarithmic with respect to the number of regions in the partition. The algorithm is based on heuristic rules that are used to partition the state space and estimate the approximation error.

Modem aircraft include a variety of automatic controlsystems that aid the flight in navigation, flight management, and augmenting the stability characteristics of the airplane. Typical controlsystems development involves multiple requirements or objectives. On the other hand, the increasing level of complexity and sophistication of aircraft systems leads to a hierarchical architecture that the overall system consists of many distributed components and subsystems. It brings a even more challenging task to consider the multi-objective design and integrated control together. Previous work has been conducted to propose a uniform framework and design approach where control integration strategy and multiple objectives can be addressed simultaneously, however, the complexity of designed controller may not lead to a practically sound solution. In this paper, we present the investigation of reducing the order of the controller using the model reduction techniques. A numerical pitch/speed autopilot is further applied to illustrate the effectiveness of controller order reduction.
