The drum water level is a very important operating parameter of a drum boiler, and it is also a sign of whether the boiler steam system is balanced. Maintaining the water level of the steam drum within a certain allowable range is a necessary condition to ensure the safe operation of boilers and steam turbines. Excessive water levels will affect the normal operation of the steam separator, and the steam quality will deteriorate. When the superheater tube wall and the steam turbine blade become fouled seriously, it will cause the steam to carry water and cause the steam turbine water impact to damage the equipment. If the water level is too low, the water circulation will be destroyed, and in severe cases, the water wall pipe will be deformed and burst. Therefore, the water level control of the steam drum has always received great attention. For the control of the water level of the steam drum, the motivation is to adapt the boiler water supply to the boiler's evaporation capacity, maintain the steam drum water level within the specified range, and at the same time maintain a stable water supply flow. © 2021 ieee.

Autonomous Vehicle (AV) architectures fuse legacy, electromechanical components with advanced sensor technology and digital controllers, governed by software. An open challenge for the design of AVs are cyber threats such as Electromagnetic Injection (EMI) attacks, to the low-level layer, comprising electromechanical components, which can propagate through to the higher-level, intelligent control, affecting decision-making and the safety of the vehicle. This study analyses the robustness of the design of the software stack of a real-world AV to attacks on the low-level actuation using the example of an EMI attack on the steering angle sensor. To achieve this, we create a hybrid testbed which combines the mathematical model of the lowlevel sensor with the high-fidelity, intelligent control. We further develop safety and performance metrics measured at the highlevel, which we use to generate a detailed view on the safety and system performance of the software. We conduct diverse EMI attacks on the target AV, within 3 diverse critical driving scenarios, consisting of $>1000$ simulations. The results indicate a correlation between an increase in attack noise with an increase in safety violations and failures to complete the mission of the AV. Our results highlight the importance for AV software developers of testing under diverse attack and driving scenarios, as each scenario within our experimentation exhibits different behaviour of the system and correlations to differing safety and system performance indicators.

The analysis of approaches to assessing the vulnerability of complex network systems and indicators used to measure the effect of external influences on the nodes and connections of the network is carried out. The problem of blocking target objects of the system by constructing cross-sections using the developed practical algorithms is considered. A probabilistic modeling algorithm is proposed to construct cross-sections. For the selection of cross-sections that cause the maximum number of outages of non-Target consumers, indicators of the availability of nodes and cross-sections to resource sources are proposed. An example of the application of these indicators is given, illustrating the selection of blocking cross-sections on a typical ieee scheme. © 2021 ieee.

Emerging non-volatile memories overcome the bottlenecks associated with traditional DRAM memories, such as low density and high energy. The high operating voltages required for such non-volatile memories make them vulnerable to Biased Temperature Instability (BTI) aging. The aging of a device can be controlled by the de-stress operation, where the stress voltage applied to the device is removed for a small duration. Performing de-stress in regular intervals helps to partially recover from age degradation. Such an interval-based de-stress can affect the service of regular requests and thus can hamper the system *** control the aging of PCM memories while maintaining the system performance, we propose AGRAS: age and memory request-rate aware scheduling method to schedule de-stress as well as regular requests. AGRAS schedules the de-stress operation only when the incoming request rate is not very high, thus controlling performance degradation. Additionally, it makes sure that in events of a prolonged high request rate, the de-stress gets scheduled in order to control device age degradation. The proposal helps to improve the system performance while minimizing the age degradation compared to the setup, which de-stresses at regular intervals.

A rigorous check is a significant phase in the design process of control programs of safety-critical cyber-physical systems. Here, we consider such programs to be implemented using IEC 61499 standard for industrial automation. After the check is performed (for example, using formal verification), the engineer needs to ensure that even in unexpected situations, the system will not fail during the runtime, and for this online verification methods can be utilized. In this work, we consider attaching monitors implemented as basic function blocks to the interface of the controller, thus having a property being monitored represented in the form of a state machine. Now, monitors make the system safer only if their quality is also ensured. Since their complexity is far lower than the complexity of the controller, they can be model checked, however, in the case of IEC 61499 function blocks, open-loop model checking will produce spurious counterexamples as it will allow combinations that are not possible according to the IEC 61499 function blocks semantics (e.g., data transferred without firing the event). The current work addresses this issue and proposes a method for close-loop model checking of monitors, using the non-deterministic twin of a controller under supervision. We present our approach using the system of two orthogonal pneumatic cylinders.

This paper presents a compact driver circuit with independent pixel-level temperature regulation for thermo-optic based 2D Nanophotonic phased arrays (NPAs) in light detection and ranging (LIDAR) and Virtual Reality (VR) applications. To minimize the interconnection density, the proposed driver unit uses only a single electrical contact to its corresponding NPA pixel for both heating and temperature measurement functions. The driver was fabricated using TSMC 65 nm technology and each unit is realized in an area of $15\ \mu\mathrm{m}\times 15\ \mu\mathrm{m}$ . The design enables scalable 3D heterogeneous integration between any tile-based NPA with pixel pitch below $15\ \mu\mathrm{m}$ and its electrical control system. The temperature regulation performance of the proposed circuit was characterized by intentionally introducing a ±20% variation to the load resistance to simulate the temperature deviation in the NPA. The measured phase errors are suppressed by the feedback controller to a maximum of $0.07\pi$ and an average of $0.02\pi$ within the full $2\pi$ phase shift operation range.

Many have predicted the future of the Web to be the integration of Web content with the real-world through technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR). This has led to the rise of Extended Reality (XR) Web Browsers used to shorten the long AR application development and deployment cycle of native applications especially across different platforms. As XR Browsers mature, we face new challenges related to collaborative and multi-user applications that span users, devices, and machines. These collaborative XR applications require: (1) networking support for scaling to many users, (2) mechanisms for content access control and application isolation, and (3) the ability to host application logic near clients or data sources to reduce application latency. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of the AR Edge Networking Architecture (ARENA) which is a platform that simplifies building and hosting collaborative XR applications on WebXR capable browsers. ARENA provides a number of critical components including: a hierarchical geospatial directory service that connects users to nearby servers and content, a token-based authentication system for controlling user access to content, and an application/service runtime supervisor that can dispatch programs across any network connected device. All of the content within ARENA exists as endpoints in a PubSub scene graph model that is synchronized across all users. We evaluate ARENA in terms of client performance as well as benchmark end-to-end response-time as load on the system scales. We show the ability to horizontally scale the system to Internet-scale with scenes containing hundreds of users and latencies on the order of tens of milliseconds. Finally, we highlight projects built using ARENA and showcase how our approach dramatically simplifies collaborative multi-user XR development compared to monolithic approaches.

High-quality ocean observation is essential for research and applications in ocean exploration and climate change. With moving into the era of big data in recent years, it becomes crucial to process these massive raw observations accurately and efficiently. This paper addressed issues encountered in processing ocean big data within traditional delayed-mode quality control systems, including substantial serial I/O workloads and frequent context switching. A parallel quality control scheme named CODC-pyParaQC was proposed by constructing computing process groups. It retains the advantages of the existed delayed-mode quality control system (e.g. CODC-QC) while improving the efficiency of the quality control procedure, solving the feasibility of a large-scale parallel computation of the quality control scheme and realizing the (near) real-time quality control of massive ocean observation profiles. The results showed that the efficiency of single-node quality control has been improved by about 10 times. Leveraging the computing power of supercomputers and employing multi process groups for cross-node parallel computation, we have developed a fast and efficient (near) real-time quality control procedure. This system processed approximately 22,548,733 temperature profiles from the world ocean database (1940-2023) in about 6.5 hours. Our new quality control scheme can ensure the computing capability necessary for establishing a high-quality ocean observation profile database.

Neural networks have been increasingly applied to control in learning-enabled cyber-physical systems (LE-CPSs) and demonstrated great promises in improving system performance and efficiency, as well as reducing the need for complex physical models. However, the lack of safety guarantees for such neural network based controllers has significantly impeded their adoption in safety-critical CPSs. In this work, we propose a controller adaptation approach that automatically switches among multiple controllers, including neural network controllers, to guarantee system safety and improve energy efficiency. Our approach includes two key components based on formal methods and machine learning. First, we approximate each controller with a Bernstein-polynomial based hybrid system model under bounded disturbance, and compute a safe invariant set for each controller based on its corresponding hybrid system. Intuitively, the invariant set of a controller defines the state space where the system can always remain safe under its control. The union of the controllers' invariants sets then define a safe adaptation space that is larger than (or equal to) that of each controller. Second, we develop a deep reinforcement learning method to learn a controller switching strategy for reducing the control/actuation energy cost, while with the help of a safety guard rule, ensuring that the system stays within the safe space. Experiments on a linear adaptive cruise control system and a non-linear Van der Pol's oscillator demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on energy saving and safety enhancement.
