General-purpose middleware must often be specialized for resource-constrained, real-time and embedded systems to improve their response-times, reliability, memory footprint, and even power consumption. Software engineering techniques, such as aspect-oriented programming (AOP), feature-oriented programming (FOP), and reflection make the specialization task simpler, albeit still requiring the system developer to manually identify the system invariants, and sources of performance and memory footprint bottlenecks that determine the required specializations. Specialization reuse is also hampered due to a lack of common taxonomy to document the recurring specializations. This paper presents the GeMS (Generative Middleware Specialization) framework to address these challenges. We present results of applying GeMS to a distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) system case study that depict a 21-35% reduction in footprint, and a 36% improvement in performance while simultaneously alleviating 97% of the developer efforts in specializing middleware. © 2011 ieee.

This paper discusses the software architecture of a real-time CORBA object request broker (ORB) called ZEN, written in real-time Java, which is designed to eliminate common sources of overhead and non-determinism in ORB implementations. We illustrate how ZEN can be configured to select the minimal set of components used by an application. Our experience with ZEN indicates that combining real-time Java with real-time CORBA is a major step forward towards simplifying the development and maintenance of distributed middleware and applications with stringent quality of service requirements.

service oriented Architectures (SOAs) are composed of distributed services that interact through standard interfaces, and evolve transparently to other services and users. Although such dynamicity makes SOA a promising architectural style, it prevents organizations from having complete knowledge of the SOA and of its (possibly untrusted) services. This constitutes an important restriction to the applicability of the SOA architectural style to real-time and (business-)critical services, consequently requiring new solutions to automatically discover the services that compose the SOA and to assess their behavior during execution. In this paper we present an approach for services discovery in dynamic SOAs. The discovery algorithm we propose merges information provided by different services providers and is implemented in a testing service that becomes an intrinsic part of the SOA. The practical case study presented shows the effectiveness of the solution. © 2011 ieee.

New applications introducing restrictions in power consumption, heat, costs and available space lead to small microcontrollers becoming more and more important in distributed real-time systems. Traditional real-time middleware architectures don't fit very well for these small devices. The paper presents an ongoing approach of constructing middleware for small devices by adapting the microkernel concept known from operating systems to middleware. This middleware called OSA+ is service oriented and consists of a small core, basic-, extension-, and user-services. The core provides only a restricted functionality, while the basic and extension services adapt and scale the system according to the application environment. A first (quick and non-optimal) prototype implementation offers a core size of about 60 kBytes and an average size of about 10 kBytes for a basic service. We consider this as a basis for further optimizations leading to yet smaller sizes.

Grid computing has emerged as a new paradigm of distributed computing technology on large-scale resource sharing and coordinated problem solving. Based on a proposed Web service-based grid architecture, we have designed a service grid middleware system called CROWN which aims to promote the utilization of valuable resources and cooperation of researchers nationwide and world-wide. To address the issues of CROWN resource management, we proposed some key technologies including trustworthy remote and hot service deployment, overlay-based distributed resource organization, resource scheduling and load balance, and federation-based virtual organization management. A status of the wide-area CROWN testbed is also introduced in this paper. Three typical applications including AREM, MDP and gViz are deployed on the CROWN testbed. Experience of CROWN testbed deployment and application development shows that the middleware can support the typical scenarios such as computing-intensive applications and data-intensive applications etc.

Software component techniques have been widely used for enhancement and the cost reduction of software development. We herein introduce a component system with a real-time operating system (RTOS). A case study of a two-wheeled inverted pendulum balancing robot with the component system is presented. The component system can deal with RTOS resources, such as tasks and semaphores, as components. Moreover, a trace functionality which is a new functionality to confirm the state of components or calling components without modification of C source code is introduced. © 2010 ieee.

Many real-time systems use preemptive priorities in their internals to guarantee certain real-time performance. This includes technologies that range from RTSJ (The real- time Specification for Java) to middleware like real-time CORBA (Common object Request Broker Architecture) which offers additional models and policies that blend client and server information. This decision makes easier the integration of real-time acceptance tests and dispatching policies in these kinds of infrastructures. In this paper, we analyze different tradeoffs that emerge from the definition of different propagation models for distributed real-time Java. The paper covers technological integration aspects, impact on interfaces, and other practical issues more related to the performance that this model offers to a real-time application. © 2010 ieee.

service oriented architecture (SOA) is becoming established in computing as a means to integrate processing and data across organisations. This paper proposes that system-level integration can benefit from service oriented architectural descriptions and loose coupling between the problem domain requirements and different system solutions. The problem domain is exemplified as military capability, from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), in particular, Network Enabled Capability (NEC). Representations of military capability in the problem domain can be described in terms of processes. The processes are sequences of functions that can be described as services. Then different types of system solutions can implement the described services. Firstly, the paper presents an overview of conceptual SOA and in the context of military capability compares three levels of service integration: business services, systems services and computing services. Secondly, the paper presents a framework for evaluating the performance and effectiveness of service integration to compare different solutions in delivering military capability.

service-oriented Architecture has the major advantage of enabling rapid composition of distributed applications from various services, and has become increasingly popular for many large-scale service-based systems in various application areas, including scientific collaboration, e-business, health care, military, and homeland security. Situation awareness (SA W) is the capability of the entities in a service-based system to be aware of the situation changes and automatically adapt themselves to such changes to satisfy user requirements, including security and privacy. The continuing evolutions of the entities and environment makes SA W one of the most desired features to support dynamic adaptive computing in service-based systems. In this paper, the relationship between contexts/situations and services in situation-aware service-based systems is identified and at? extension of OWL-S with situation ontology, called SAW-OWL-S, incorporates SA W in service specifications is presented. An approach to generating service specifications for situation-aware service-based systems using SAW-OWL-S and the system diagram of situation-aware service-based systems using SAW-OWL-S are presented.
