In service-based systems, services from various providers can be integrated following specific workflows to achieve users' goals. These workflows are often executed and coordinated by software agents, which invoke appropriate services based on situation changes. These agents need to be deployed on underlying platforms with respect to various requirements, such as access Permission of agents, real-time requirements of workflows, and reliability of the overall system. Deploying these agents manually is often error-prone and time-consuming. Furthermore, agents need to migrate from hosts to hosts at runtime to satisfy deployment requirements. Hence, an automated agent deployment mechanism is needed In this paper, an approach to automated agent deployment in service-base systems is presented. In this approach, the deployment requirements are represented as deployment policies, and techniques are developed for generating agent deployment plans by solving the constraints specfied in deployment policies, and for generating executable code for runtime agent deployment and migration.

Recent advances in software processes and artifacts for automating middleware configurations in distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems are starting to address the complexities faced by system developers in dealing with the flexibility and configurability provided by contemporary middleware. Despite the benefits of these new processes, there remain significant challenges in verifying their correctness, and validating their effectiveness in meeting the end-to-end quality of service (QoS) requirements of DRE systems. This paper addresses this problem by describing how model-checking and structural correspondence can be used to verify the correctness of a middleware QoS configuration process that uses model-based graph transformations at its core. Next, it provides empirical proof to validate the effectiveness of our technique to meet the end-to-end QoS requirements in the context of a representative DRE system.

In classical real-time systems the resources for an application are allocated at system start so that every resource request can be fulfilled in future. This would lead to much internal waste of resources in the case of modern Self-X systems, because these systems have highly dynamic resource consumptions. The Flexible Resource Manager (FRM) was developed to overcome this problem. The manager puts temporarily unused resources at other applications' disposal. In this paper the FRM approach is evaluated by concrete application examples and randomly generated applications. © 2010 ieee.

A middleware model named ROAFTS (real-time object-oriented Adaptive Fault Tolerance Support) has been evolving in the UCI DREAM Lab. over the past decade as the core of a reliable execution engine model for fault-tolerant (FT) real-time (RT) distributed computing (DC) applications. It is meant to be an integration of various mechanisms for fault detection and recovery in a form that meshes well with high-level RT DC object/component-based programming, in particular, TMO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) programming. Using ROAFTS as a backbone and low-layer middleware, we developed a model and a skeleton implementation for FT DC middleware providing efficient FT execution services for component-based home network applications. Capabilities for management of home information processing devices, including health monitoring of home devices, reconfiguration of device connections, and servicing queries on device status, were added to ROAFTS. Those additions were first designed as a network of high-level RT DC components, i.e., TMOs. Then the TMO network was extended into an FT TMO network by applying the replication scheme called the PSTR (Primary-Shadow TMO Replication) scheme and incorporating a component responsible for reconfiguring TMO replicas. This extension of ROAFTS is called ROAFTS-HNE (Home Network Extension) and its architecture is presented here. In addition, during the development of the ROAFTS-HNE model, we formulated a new approach for applying the PSTR scheme to RT DC components supported by ROAFTS. Finally, evaluations of the recovery times of a prototype implementation have been conducted.

Quality of service adaptability refers to the ability of components/services to adapt in run-time the quality exhibited. A composition study from a quality point of view would investigate how these adaptable elements could be combined to meet system's quality requirements. Enclosing quality properties with architectural models has been typically used to improve system understanding. Nevertheless these properties along with some supplementary information about quality adaptation would allow us to carry out a composition study during the design phase and even to predict some features of the adaptability behavior of the system. Existing modeling languages and tools lack enough mechanisms to cope with adaptability, e.g. to describe system elements that may offer/require several quality levels. This paper shows how we reuse existing modeling languages and tools, combine them and create new ones to tackle the problem of quality of service adaptability and composition. The final goal of this work is to evaluate architectural models to predict system's QoS behavior before it is implemented.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the real-time System Compiler. The RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. This ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent. © 2010 ieee.

In this paper, a Role-based Access Control (RBAC) model is applied and extended to a multimedia version called Multi-Role Based Access Control (MRBAC), which can fully support the comprehensive and multilevel security control requirements of the distributed multimedia applications. The object-oriented concept is adopted in MRBAC to perform the hybrid role hierarchy management and security roles and rules administration. In summary, MRBAC can: 1) support the multi-level security protection for multimedia data;2) provide access control by checking both the time constrains and IP addresses;and 3) decentralize the administration functions to make the access control management more efficient.

This paper introduces ReDAC, a new algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of multi-threaded applications. In order to achieve high reliability and availability, distributed component software has to support dynamic reconfiguration. Typical examples include the application of hot-fixes to deal with security vulnerabilities. ReDAC can be implemented on top of the modern component-platforms Java and NET. We extend the statical term component, denoting a unit of deployment, to runtime by defining a capsule (runtime component instance) to be a set of interconnected objects. This allows us to apply dynamic updates at the level of components during runtime without stopping whole applications. Using system-wide unique identifiers for threads (logical thread IDs), we can detect and also bring capsules into a reconfigurable state by selectively blocking threads, relying on data structures maintained by additional logic integrated into the capsules using aspect-oriented programming. An important contribution of this paper is that ReDAC supports the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multi-threaded and re-entrant components with cyclic call dependencies.

To apply the component-based approach to distributed real-time software development, it is necessary to identify components based on both functional and real-time requirements. Since a component may be acquired from external sources, it becomes necessary during integration to ensure that a component satisfies the real-time requirements of the target application software. Since these requirements vary, customizable so that during integration it can adapt itself to the specific real-time requirements of the target-distributed software. To facilitate such activities, it is preferable to have components that are capable of performing self-customization using a set of built-in services. In this paper, an object-oriented real-time component framework and two built-in customization services are presented to address the specified issues. © 2000 ieee.

distributed applications are difficult to build and maintain and are even more difficult when the applications are distributed over wide-area networks. distributed object computing middleware has emerged to simplify the building of distributed applications by hiding implementation details behind functional interfaces. However critical applications have non-functional requirements, such as real-rime performance, dependability, or security, that are as important as the functional requirements, but are also hidden by the middleware. Because current distributed object middleware doesn't support these aspects of critical applications, application developers often find themselves bypassing the distributed object systems, effectively gaining little or no advantage from the middleware. We have developed Quality objects (QuO), a framework for including Quality of service (QoS) in distributed object applications. QuO supports the specification of QoS contracts between clients and service providers, runtime monitoring of contracts, and adaptation to changing system conditions. A crucial aspect of QuO is a suite of Quality Description Languages for describing states of QoS, system elements that need to be monitored to measure the current QoS, and notification and adaptation to trigger when the state of QoS in the system changes. This paper gives a brief overview of QuO and describes the syntax and semantics of CDL, the component of QDL for describing QoS contracts.
