Applying model-driven development methodologies provide inherent benefits such as increased productivity, greater reuse, and better maintainability, to name a few. Efforts on achieving model-driven development of web services already exist. However, there is currently no complete solution that addresses non-functional aspects of these services as well. This paper presents an ongoing work which seeks to integrate these non-functional aspects in the development of web services, with a clear emphasis on security. © 2010 ieee.

Many engineers are still reluctant to adopt advanced object-oriented technologies (such as high modularity: dynamic binding, automatic garbage collection, etc.) for embedded systems with real-time constraints, because of their supposed inefficiency. We set ourselves into the context of building telecommunication systems with a standard object-oriented analysis and design approach. We describe how we use relevant design patterns, followed with an implementation in a pure object-oriented language (Eiffel) to conciliate the needed efficiency with the benefits of the object-oriented approach - flexibility dynamic configurability maintenability portability, etc. We discuss a case study. based on the implementation of SMDS (Switched Multi-megabits Data service) servers featuring high-throughput and low-delay transmissions and respecting the real-time constraints of SMDS.

Complex simulation systems often comprise multiple distributed simulators that need to interoperate and synchronize states and events. In many cases, the simulation logics which are developed by different teams with specific expertise, need to be integrated to build a complete simulation system. Thus, supporting composability and reusability of simulation functionalities with minimal integration and performance overhead is a challenging but required capability. Middleware for game engines are promising to realize both the modular and reusable development criteria as well as the high performance requirements, while data-centric publish/subscribe middleware can support seamless integration and synchronization of the distributed artifacts. However, differences in the level of abstraction at which these middleware operate and the semantic differences in their underlying ontologies make it hard and challenging for simulation application developers and system integrators to realize a complete, operational system. To that end this paper presents a model-driven approach to blending the two middleware, wherein the modeling capabilities provide intuitive and higher-level abstractions for developers to reason about the composition and validation of the complete system, and the generative capabilities address the inherent and accidental complexities incurred in reconciling the semantic differences between the gaming and pub/sub middleware. We present a concrete implementation of our approach and illustrate its use and performance results using simple use cases.

time triggered devices are increasingly deployed in safety-critical distributed applications. Failures that manifest during the startup process of the synchronisation service pose a challenge to diagnose. The difficulty stems from the fact that most implemented diagnostic services for time-triggered systems employ the prior knowledge of the schedule to provide diagnosis. However, at the beginning of the startup process, when the global time base is not yet established, these diagnostic services are not viable. This work proposes the use of a fault injection framework to generate data that resembles the behaviour of failed components during startup. The data generated can then be used for developing fault diagnostic mechanisms. Due to the large data set that can be provided by fault injection frameworks, deep learning is proposed as a strategy for failure identification. The data generated from a fault injection framework is used to train the neural network to distinguish between correct behaviour, corruption and omission failures during startup.

The confluence of computers, communications, and databases is quickly creating a global virtual database where many applications require real-time access to both temporally accurate and multimedia data. This is particularly true in military and intelligence applications, but these required features are needed in many commercial applications as well. We are developing a distributed database, called BeeHive, which could offer features along different types of requirements: real-time, fault-tolerance, security, and quality-of service for audio and video. Support of these features and potential trade-offs between them could provide a significant improvement in performance and functionality over current distributed database and object management systems. In this paper, we present a high level design for BeeHive architecture and sketch the design of the BeeHive object Model (BOM) which extends object-oriented data models by incorporating time and other features into objects.

This paper provides three contributions to the study of quality of service (QoS) configuration in component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the challenges associated with mapping the platform-independent QoS policies of an application into platform-dependent values of QoS parameters used to configure the behavior of QoS-enabled component middleware. Second, we describe a novel approach that uses model-transformation to map these QoS policies onto component middleware QoS configuration parameters. Third, we demonstrate the use of model-checking to verify the properties of the transformation and automate the synthesis of configuration parameters required to tune the QoS-enabled component middleware. Our results indicate that model-transformation and model-checking provide significant benefits with respect to automation, reusability, verifiability, and scalability of the QoS mapping process compared with conventional middleware configuration techniques.

Knowledge is the source of intelligence and both knowledge representation and knowledge management are crucial for intelligent systems. Well employed knowledge helps such systems become aware of situations, recognize states and eventually respond to changes. This paper presents our vision of knowledge representation and awareness in mobile swarm systems formed as open-ended ensembles of special autonomic components. Such components encapsulate rules, constraints and mechanisms for self-management and acquire and process knowledge about themselves, other service components and their environment. In this paper, we present our approach to high-level model of structured knowledge and a formal model of awareness in such autonomic service-component ensembles. © 2011 ieee.

Standards-based quality of service (QoS)-enabled component middletvare is increasingly being used as a platform,for developing distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems that execute in open environments where operational conditions, input workload, and resource availability cannot be characterized accurately a priori. Although QoS-enabled component middleware offers many desirable features, until recently it lacked the ability to efficiently allocate resources and configure platform-specific QoS settings based on utilization of system resources and application QoS. Moreover, it has also lacked the ability to monitor and enforce application QoS requirements. This paper presents two contributions to research on adaptive resource management for component-based DRE systems. First, we describe the structure and functionality of the Resource Allocation and Control Engine (RACE), which is an open-source adaptive resource management framework built atop standards-based QoS-enabled component iniddleware. Second, we demonstrate the effectiveness of RACE in the context of a representative DREsystem: NASA's Magnetospheric Multi-scale Mission system.

component-based software development would allow application software be largely constructed, rather than programmed. This approach would dramatically improve the productivity of software development. Although there are many reusable software packages available, the integration of the chosen parts remains to be a very difficult problem because there are many barriers of integration, including programming languages, operating systems, communication mechanism, interface, etc. In this paper, an approach to developing real-time application software based on a distributed component architecture and cross-platform and cross-language integration of these software components are presented. The Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) will be used in the implementation. Our distributed components will satisfy easy retrieval and integration over a heterogeneous distributed system environment. A component replication mechanism is used for providing fault-tolerance feature. Using object adapters with real-rime request monitor-and scheduler that are transparently generated by a distributed component integration tool, real-time and fault-tolerance features can be easily incorporated in the application software.

Allowing real-time systems to autonomously evolve or self-organize during their life-time poses challenges on guidance of such a process. Hard real-time systems must never break their timing constraints even if undergoing a change in configuration. We propose to enhance future real-time systems with an in-system model-based timing analysis engine capable of deciding whether a configuration is feasible to be executed. This engine is complemented by a formal procedure guiding system evolution. The distributed implementation of a runtime environment (RTE) implementing this procedure imposes two key questions of consistency: How do we ensure model consistency across the distributed system and how do we ensure consistency of the actual system behavior with the model? We present a synchronization protocol solving the model consistency issues and provide a discussion on implications of different mode-change protocols on consistency of the system with its model. © 2010 ieee.
