We propose a new, minimal specification for real-time Java,for safety critical applications. The intention is to provide a profile that supports programming of applications that can be validated against safety critical standards such as DO-178B[15]. The proposed profile is in line with the Java specification request JSR-302: Safety Critical Java Technology, which is still under discussion. In contrast to the current direction of the expert group for the JSR-302 we do not subset the rather complex real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ). Nevertheless, our profile can be implemented on top of an RTSJ compliant JVM.

Effective resource management for distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to their unique characteristics, including (1) constraints in multiple resources and (2) highly fluctuating resource availability and input workload. DRE systems can benefit from a middleware framework that enables adaptive resource management algorithms to ensure application QoS requirements are met. This paper identifies key challenges in designing and extending resource allocation algorithms for DRE systems. We present an empirical study of bin-packing algorithms enhanced to meet these challenges. Our analysis identifies input application patterns that help generate appropriate heuristics for using these algorithms effectively in DRE systems.

Modern real-time applications are very dynamic and cannot cope with the use of worst case execution time to avoid overload situations. Therefore scheduling algorithms that are able to prevent timing faults during overload are required. In this context, the value parameter has become useful to add generality and flexibility to such systems. In this paper we present the scheduling algorithm called DMB (Dynamic Misses Based), which is capable of dynamically changing tasks value in order to adjust their importance according to its timing faults rate. The main goal of DMB is to allow the prediction of timing faults during overloads and thereby support a dynamic tuning of tasks fault rate. It is used to enhance the features of the previously defined TAFT (time-Aware Fault-Tolerant) scheduler Obtained results show that DMB in conjunction with TAFT reached the most promising results during overloads, allowing to control tasks degradation in a graceful and determined way.

Quality and risk concerns currently, limit the application of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software components to non-critical applications. Software metrics can quantify factors contributing to the overall quality, of a component-based system, and models for tradeoffs between cost and various aspects of quality can guide quality and risk management by identifying and eliminating sources of risk. This paper discusses metrics and models that can be used to alleviate quality concerns for COTS-based systems, enabling the use of COTS components in a broader range of applications.

Developing real-time software for large-scale distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to variabilities that arise from (1) integration with various subsystems based on different programming languages and hardware, OS, middleware platforms, (2) fine tuning the system to satisfy a range of customer requirements, such as various quality-of-service (QoS) properties, and (3) changing functional and QoS properties of the system based on available system resources. This paper describes our experience applying model-driven development (MDD) tools and QoS-enabled component middleware technologies to address domain- and middleware-specific variability, challenges in an inventory tracking system, which manages the storage and flow of items in warehouses. Our results show that (1) coherent integration of MDD tools and component middleware can provide a productive software process for developing DRE systems by modularizing and composing variability concerns and (2) significant challenges remain that must be overcome to apply these technologies to a broader range of DRE systems.

distributed real-time automotive embedded systems have to be highly dependable as well as cost-efficient due to the large number of manufactured units. To close the gap between raising complexity and cutting costs, upcoming software standards like AUTOSAR introduce a clear separation of concerns into their system architecture. An AUTOSAR application is built from components that deal with business logic only whereas infrastructural services are provided by standardized middleware. Unfortunately, this middleware tends to be heavy-weight due to its coarse-grained layered design. By applying a component based design to AUTOSAR's middleware, a custom-tailored version for each specific application and system node can be built to overcome this problem. This paper demonstrates how to automatically synthesize component based middleware via the Connector Transformation: component connectors in platform independent application models are utilized to automatically assemble platform- and application specific middleware. As a result, AUTOSAR middleware becomes custom-tailored and hence light-weight and flexible. In addition, the described synthesis algorithm is capable of incorporating timing annotations via interface contracts at model level, and thus reflects upcoming ambitions to cover real-time constraints at middleware level within AUTOSAR. To prove our approach we successfully synthesized middleware for a demonstrator application and compared it to its conventional counterpart.

Recently, the application domains where the development of systems with temporal guarantees is needed have increased. The majority of such domains are dynamic environments where the classical design approach is no longer applicable since it is too pessimistic. Thus, new challenges arise to adapt the current methodologies used in different architectural levels to these new environments. New directions and paradigms are needed to allow combining functional flexibility and dynamism with temporal predictability. The current work addresses these new challenges through the exploration of the applicability of concepts from the service oriented paradigm to distributed real-time systems. We propose a concrete system model based on a holistic time-triggered-based approach for design and configuration. Based on this model, we analyse the architectural entities required for two different architectural design approaches: static, when no reconfigurations at run-time are admitted, and dynamic, when these reconfigurations are possible. An exhaustive composition algorithm is also proposed.

The recent increase in complexity and functionality in embedded systems makes them more vulnerable to rootkit-type attacks, raising the need for integrity management systems. However, as of today there is no such system that can guarantee the system's safety while matching the low-resource, real-time and multi-core requirements of embedded systems. In this paper, we present a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) based monitoring service for embedded systems that checks the actual kernel data against a safe data specification. However, due to the VMM and multi-core nature of the system, the guest OS can be preempted at any time, leading to the checking of potentially inconsistent states. We evaluated two approaches to solve this problem: detecting such invalid states by checking specific kernel data, and detecting system calls using the VMM. © 2010 ieee.

service-oriented architecture (SOA) middleware has emerged as a powerful and popular distributed computing paradigm due to its high-level abstractions for composing systems and hiding platform-level details. Control of some details hidden by SOA middleware is necessary, however, to provide managed quality of service (QoS) for SOA systems that need predictable performance and behavior. This paper presents a policy-driven approach for managing QoS in SOA systems. We discuss the design of several key QoS services and empirically evaluate their ability to provide QoS under CPU overload and bandwidth-constrained situations. © 2010 ieee.

Mixed-criticality (MC) systems are composed of tasks with varying criticality co-hosted on a single shared platform. In conventional MC systems, upon criticality change, the lower criticality tasks are penalized to guarantee resources for the higher criticality ones. However, in practice, penalizing lower criticality tasks have adverse effects and hence, the system is often under-utilized. In this paper, we consider the problem of reservation-based scheduling of mixed-criticality systems on a homogeneous multiprocessor platform to guarantee full service to the lower criticality tasks when one of the processors switches to the critical state. We explore the semi-partitioned scheduling model for dual-criticality systems in which the low criticality tasks executing on a processor are migrated to another processor upon mode switch to improve the service offered to them in the high criticality mode. We present the scheduling strategy of the proposed algorithm and derive its utilization bound. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we use randomly generated task sets to compare the schedulability performance of the algorithm with the existing algorithms. Our results show that the proposed algorithm improves both schedulability and low criticality support when compared to existing algorithms for implicit-deadline task systems.
