Requirements of High Integrity systems now encompass distribution mechanisms along with strong functional and non-functional features (run-time support for hardware, dependability, safety, analyzability). In this paper, we show how model processing help addressing such needs. We present a generic distribution model suitable for High Integrity systems, and demonstrate how a high-level modeling deployment view allows one to greatly reduce the model complexity. Finally, we conclude by assessing a case study.

Many emerging applications operate on continuous unbounded data streams and need real-time data services. Providing deadline guarantees for queries over dynamic data streams is a challenging problem due to bursty stream rates and time-varying contents. This paper presents a prediction-based QoS management scheme for real-time data stream query processing in distributed environments. The prediction-based QoS management scheme features query workload estimators, which predict the query workload using execution time profiling and input data sampling. In this paper, we apply the prediction-based technique to select the proper propagation schemes for data streams and intermediate query results in distributed environments. The performance study demonstrates that the proposed solution tolerates dramatic workload fluctuations and saves significant amounts of CPU time and network bandwidth with little overhead.

Embedded real-time applications are often built from scratch on a trial-and-error basis, which leads to sub-optimal designs with latent errors that are not detectable in early stages of use or deployment and often incurs prolonged time-to-market. A new application framework, called Verifiable Embedded real-time Application Framework (VERTAF) is proposed for embedded real-time application development, with the aim of reducing design errors and increasing design productivity VERTAF is an integration of three technologies, namely object-oriented technology, software component technology, and formal verification technology. VERTAF consists of five software components: Implanter, Modeler, Scheduler, Verifier, and Generator. Experiences of using VERTAF show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse, and a significant decrease in design time and effort through design verification. An example shows a relatively low design effort on the part of the designer using VERTAF.

A key challenge in keeping distributed clocks well synchronized in a LAN environment via OS- or middleware-level mechanisms is to create an interference-free condition in a network channel(s) and a nonpreemptible on-alert condition in the responsible thread in each node during each resynchronization round while keeping the length of each round as short as possible. An approach for meeting this challenge which is based on the middleware architecture TMOSM, has been presented. A prototype implementation and its measurements indicated that with a typical network of PCs connected via a 10 Mbps Ethernet, the PC nodes can be kept synchronized within the deviation bound of 0.5 milliseconds. The organizing principle is believed to be applicable to many real-time OSs or middleware used to support distributed computing applications.

Nowadays, there are many protocols able to cope with process crashes, but, unfortunately, a process crash represents only a particular faulty behavior. Handling tougher failures (e.g. sending omission failures, receive omission failures, arbitrary failures) is a real practical challenge due to malicious attacks or unexpected software errors. This paper proposes a component-based methodology allowing to take a protocol A resilient to crash failures and to add software components, namely liveness and safety failure detectors, in order to adapt the protocol A to be resilient to more general failures than crashes, without changing the code of A.. Then, the feasibility of this approach is shown, by providing an implementation of liveness failure detectors and of safer failure detectors for a protocol solving the problem of global data computation.

The component/container paradigm helps to reduce the complexity and enhance the scalability of software development for plain desktop or enterprise systems. However the frameworks enabling this approach are often not suitable for systems with limited processing power and memory sizes, and are not dedicated to real-time requirements. As part of the European IST project COMPARE, we study a possible projection from a high-level component model (CORBA component Model) towards a low-level RT/E platform (OSEK). Preliminary results from this study are accounted in this paper In the first part, the main features of CCM and OSEK are examined. Then we propose execution and communication models using an API for OSEK that is as similar as possible to that in the CCM framework.

The service-oriented architectural style is widely perceived today. However service orientation is a very general concept and its application in real-life situations is somewhat ambiguous. This is partially due to the fact that service-oriented principles are subject to interpretation rather than elements of the style. In this paper we propose a set of design metrics for service-oriented design. Based on an established metric for the coupling of component-based systems we introduce a complexity metric by the means of service coupling. We argue that service aggregators and the centralization of a system's control flow is appropriate to address a system's complexity. In order to approach an objective design that incorporates these principles, we introduce four metrics for the analysis of how a system handles its complexity with service-oriented means. Finally, we apply the presented metrics to an enterprise-scale real-life case study that we have conducted

The complexity of software in systems like aerospace vehicles has reached the point where new techniques are needed to ensure system dependability while improving the productivity of developers. One possible approach is to use precisely defined software execution platforms that (1) enable the system to be composed from separate components, (2) restrict component interactions and prevent fault propagation, and (3) whose compositional properties are well-known. In this paper we describe the initial steps towards building a platform that combines component-based software construction with hard real-time operating system services. Specifically, the paper discusses how the CORBA component Model (CCM) could be combined with the ARINC-653 platform services and the lessons learned from this experiment. The results point towards both extending the CCM as well as revising the ARINC-653. © 2010 ieee.

This paper discusses how to maize a distributed object system flexible so as to satisfy the application's requirement in the change of the system environment. Each object supports other objects with quality of service (QoS). The change of the system is modeled to be the change of not only types of service but also QoS supported by the objects. We discuss equivalency and compatibility relations among operations with respect to QoS. By using the QoS-based relations, we newly discuss a QoS-based compensating way to recover the object from the less qualified state. Finally, we discuss QoS-based replication of objects to make required QoS available even if some replicas get less qualified. Here, the replicas may not necessarily be the same.

Dynamic software reconfiguration is a useful tool to adapt and maintain software systems. In most approaches, the system has to be stopped while the reconfiguration is in progress. This is not suitable for real-time systems, even on small-embedded systems. Timing constraints must be met even while the system is reconfiguring. Our approach is based on the realtime middleware OSA+. Our main objective is to be able to reconfigure services during run-time, with a predictable and predefined blackout time (the time the systems does not react due to the reconfiguration). Three different approaches concerning the blocking or non-blocking state of a service are presented. These approaches can be used to realize a tradeoff between the reconfiguration time and the blackout time.
