This work presents a proposal to use aspect orientation in the analysis and design of distributed Embedded real-time Systems (DERTS). These systems have several requirements directly related to their main characteristics, the so-called Non-Functional Requirements (NFR), which refer to orthogonal properties, conditions, and restrictions that are spread out over the entire system. Pure object-oriented methods do not address successfully those so called crosscutting concerns, so new technologies, like aspect orientation, are applied in order to fulfill this gap. The paper presents DERAF - distributed Embedded real-time Aspects Framework, an extensible and high-level framework (i.e. implementation-independent) to handle NFR of DERTS at earlier design stages. DERAF combines the use of aspects with RT-UML, aiming to separate the handling of non-functional from functional requirements in the Model Driven Design of DERTS. The paper presents the use of DERAF on a case study of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

Dynamic reconfiguration provides of powerful mechanism to adapt component-based distributed applications to changing environmental conditions. We have designed and implemented a framework for dynamic component reconfiguration on the basis of the Microsoft. NET environment. Within this paper we present an experimental evaluation of our infrastructure for dynamic reconfiguration of component-based applications. Our framework supports the description of application configurations and profiles and allows for selection of a particular configuration and object/component instantiation based on measured environmental conditions. In response to changes in the environment, our framework will dynamically load new configurations, thus implementing dynamic reconfiguration of an application. Configuration code for components and applications has to interact with man), functional modules and therefore is often scattered around the whole application. We use aspect-oriented programming techniques to handle configuration aspects separately from functional code. The timing behavior of dynamic reconfiguration depends heavely on properties of the underlying programming environment and the operating system. We have studied to which extend and with which performance impact the Microsoft NET Platform supports dynamic reconfiguration. The paper thoroughly discusses our experimental results.

Adaptation to changing environmental conditions is a major challenge for most distributed applications. The service-oriented programming paradigm leads to an increasing number of applications that are not only meant to provide services through standard user-interfaces hosted on desktop computers, but are to be accessible from small mobile devices as well. The integration of the different programming environments on desktop (i.e.;Windows) and mobile computers (i.e.;Java Micro Editions - J2ME) puts an extra burden on the programmer of this kind of applications. In addition, unstable conditions caused by modem infrastructures for mobile applications and varying properties of computational devices have to be considered during run-time of the application. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism for adaptive computing. Within this paper, we elaborate on the extension of our previously developed Adaptive .Net framework towards CORBA and Java. With the introduction of new connector types, our framework is able to provide seamless support for adaptive, heterogeneous applications based on .NET Java, and CORBA. In context of our framework, applications consist of components which interact via so-called connectors. The component/connector model allows for mediating between component frameworks (Java, NET) as well as between communication protocols (CORBA, NET Remoting, sockets, etc.). Within the paper we give an overview of our adaptation framework Adaptive .NET, that includes a monitoring infrastructure, a reconfiguration platform and tools for building adaptive applications. Using a proof-of-concept application, we experimentally evaluate our connector architecture and study interoperability of Java, CORBA, and .NET objects.

For distributed real-time systems, adequate profiling tools are exceedingly rare. The sheer variety and low-level nature of these systems impede the adoption of standard, general-purpose tools for performance analysis and visualization. Although much research has been devoted to profiling parallel clusters and supercomputers, the literature virtually ignores the real-time domain. Correspondingly, a handful of commercial tools is available for profiling realtime software, but they invariably make a single-node assumption and are unable to cope with distributed environments. We examine the state of performance analysis and discuss why profilers are conspicuously absent in the field of distributed real-time systems. We then explore how developers of these systems could benefit from graphical profiling tools with automatic instrumentation and data collection. Toward that end, we demonstrate the prototype of a performance visualization tool called "Bacara," the second addition to our suite of tools for Visual Analysis of distributed real-time systems, or VADR (va'dar).

Guaranteeing response times of real-time (RT) distributed computing systems has been recognized as one of the biggest challenges by the RT software research community for three decades. The concept of a hybrid approach that combines analytical derivation approaches and testing-based statistical derivation approaches in a symbiotic form for meeting this challenge was presented in recent years. However, concrete practical hybrid approaches are still in early stages of development. One such approach pursued by the authors and their collaborators is presented here. This paper focuses on the cases of deriving tight execution time bounds of the segments of object methods which do not involve calls for services from the operating system kernel and middleware. A case-study that demonstrates how the adopted approach works in handling a simple practical application is also presented.

For such networks, we propose a dynamic bandwidth management scheme for asynchromous LANS that uses the concept of time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). The scheme is to ensure qouality of service (QoS) for multimedia applications. Significant performance improvement is observed through experimental results. In particular, the transmission rates for multimedia hosts improve significantly with low jitter variations in media streams. We also propose a framework for graceful degradation of play-out quality of multimedia objects in case the LAN's total capacity is not sufficient to meet the overall demand.

As ITS technology evolves, very large volume of traffic data can be obtained in real-time. Traffic data are continuously produced and they can be considered as a kind of stream data. Currently, such traffic data are not maintained permanently because of the storage limitations of operational systems. Therefore, it was impossible to compare temporal historical patterns over long time periods. In this paper, we propose a traffic data management scheme, which can handle historical data as well as current data. The proposed scheme is based on the GALIS architecture, which is a cluster-based distributed computing system architecture that consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone. Some experimental results showing performance factors are also explained.

Recent years have witnessed the emergence and rapid growth of distributed service infrastructures such as mobile ad hoc networks, P2P PlanetLab and Grids. In such distributed infrastructures, an entity needs to utilize the services provided by other entities or the infrastructures, where trust is an important factor. There exists a gap between current trust research focusing limitedly on specific applications and a systematic, adaptable and customizable trust framework. The first limitation of current research is the lack of characterizing service-specific trust features. The second limitation lies in the restricted evaluation formulae of trust values. The trust value formulae are usually drawn from a particular mathematical model and may not satisfy some desirable properties. The third limitation is the lack of flexibility and adaptability of trust models. In this paper a comprehensive trust model is presented to address these limitations and provide a trust-based environment for distributed service infrastructures. Our simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the trust model against various attacks.

distributed event-based systems (DEBS) are gaining increasing attention in new application areas such as transport information monitoring, event-driven supply-chain management and ubiquitous sensor-rich environments. However, as DEBS increasingly enter the enterprise and commercial domains, performance and quality of service issues are becoming a major concern. While numerous approaches to performance modeling and evaluation of conventional request/reply-based distributed systems are available in the literature, no general approach exists for DEBS. This paper is the first to provide a comprehensive methodology for workload characterization and performance modeling of DEBS. A workload model of a generic DEBS is developed and operational analysis techniques are used to characterize the system traffic and derive an approximation for the mean event delivery latency. Following this, a modeling technique is presented that can be used for accurate performance prediction. The paper is concluded with a case study of a real life system demonstrating the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed approach.

This paper describes IKE 2, which is distributed object computing middleware that supports the creation of interoperable real-time distributed applications. These applications appear in many domains, such as telecom, aerospace, military testing and training ranges, and financial services. IKE 2 combines the concepts of CORBA distributed objects and anonymous publish-subscribe data dissemination to provide a programming abstraction known as a stateful distributed object (SDO). Every SDO can have both a remote method interface and publication state. The remote method interface allows client applications to invoke methods on target objects efficiently without concern for their location, programming language, OS platform, communication protocols and interconnects, or hardware. The publication state of a given SDO is disseminated to applications that have expressed their interest by subscribing to certain characteristics, such as the type of the SDO. Subscribers can read the publication state of an SDO as if it were a local object. The SDOs provided by the IKE 2 metaobject model support inheritance from other SDOs, containment of other SDOs, and references to other SDOs. IKE 2 is implemented in C++. The API relies heavily on compile-time type-safety to help ensure reliable behavior at run-time-a critical feature of any real-time system. Automatic code generation is used to provide the high-level abstractions without unduly burdening application programmers.
