As complexity of real-time embedded software grows, it is desirable to use formal verification techniques to achieve a high level of assurance. We discuss application of model-checking to verify system-level concurrency properties of component-based real-time embedded software based on CORBA Event service, using Avionics Mission computing software as an application example. We use the process algebra FSP to formalize specification of software components and system architecture, previously only available in the form of natural language and prone to misinter-pretation and misunderstanding, and use model-checking to verify system-level concurrency properties. We also discuss effective techniques for coping with the state-space explosion problem by exploiting application domain semantics. We have applied our analysis techniques to realistic application scenarios provided by our industry partner to demonstrate their utility and power.

Worst Case Execution time (WCET) computation is crucial to the overall timing analysis of real-time embedded systems. Facing the ever increasing complexity of such systems, techniques dedicated to WCET analysis can take advantage of component Based Software Engineering (CBSE) by decomposing a difficult problem into smaller pieces, easier to analyse. To achieve this objective, the corresponding analysis results have to be composed to provide timing guarantees on the whole system. In this paper, we express the WCET of a component as a formula, allowing to represent its different computational modes. We then propose a Model Driven Engineering (MDE) approach that derives parametric WCET for composite components from parametric WCET of their subcomponents. This approach gives more accurate WCET estimates than naaive additive compositional analysis by taking into account usage context of components. However, analysis scalability concerns lead us to consider a trade-off between precision and scalability. This trade-off can be specified in the model. The composition of WCET estimations is automated and produces the parametric WCET expression of the composite component under analysis. This approach has been integrated in PRIDE. © 2011 ieee.

Testing Web services performance and their Fault Tolerance Mechanisms (FTMs) are crucial for the development of today's applications. Testing the performance and FTMs of composed service systems is hard to measure at design time because service instability is often caused by the nature of the network. Using a real internet environment for testing is difficult to set up and control. We have developed a fault injection toolkit that emulates a WAN within a LAN environment between composed service components and offers full control over the emulated environments in addition to the ability to inject network-related and application specific faults. The tool also generates background workloads on the tested system for producing more realistic results. We describe an experiment that has been carried out to test the impact of fault tolerance protocols deployed at a service client by using our fault injection toolkit. © 2012 ieee.

The size and complexity of large-scale distributed embedded systems such as automotive and process controls have increased recently. Sophisticated systems that are safe and environmentally friendly require numerous types of sensor data, which are collected from various devices and sent to computers through networks. To develop such large-scale distributed embedded systems with high dependability and productivity, we have developed a virtual execution environment platform. This platform integrates numerous CPU simulators and various device simulators through the network and provides network-wide simulation functionalities. In this paper, we describe a fast CPU simulator and controlled object simulation for testing control software in a virtual software execution environment. The virtual environment integrates a CPU simulator and a controlled object simulator in order to test functional behaviors of embedded control software. The environment enables the developer to test control software at the same execution rate as a real system without the source codes. This is very helpful because in this industry, not all of the source codes are provided. © 2011 ieee.

Web services provide the potential to offer interoperability of distributed business-to-business application integration between autonomous organisations, regardless of platforms, operating systems or languages. For both user and vendor organisations, this raises immediate problems of trust, security, privacy and prevention of malicious attacks. Until these problems are addressed and solved properly, the use of Web services will be severely restricted because no-one will trust them. We describe in this paper a service-oriented architecture and an Attack-Tolerant Information Retrieval (ATIR) service which tackles certain classes of privacy problems. In particular, we address the problem of protecting a user against malicious attacks upon an information service when the user retrieves some information from the service. Although there have been many theoretical solutions to certain aspects of this problem, the results have yet to be adapted to real systems. We report our experience of integrating the ATIR service with Taverna, a popular workflow system used amongst the UK e-Science/Grid computing community to support secure information retrieval in the biology context. Performance studies show that the overhead of ATIR server-side processing is trivial (< 5%) in comparison with the total processing time of the integrated Taverna. Our experimental results also show that the major processing overhead is caused by the Taverna enactor operations which consume no less than 50% of the total processing time.

component Based Software Development (CBSD) has been established in the development of automotive real-time embedded applications at Bosch. CBSD together with Software Product Line (SPL) practice has improved software reuse, productivity, quality and complexity management, by raising the level of abstraction for software constructions and by sharing services. Although CBSD has contributed to the aforementioned improvement in the software development practice, the existing Bosch component model often requires software developers to take a close look at the implementation including models (e.g., ASCET-MD1) and even complex source code to understand software behavior and dependencies when reusing and adapting software components. This hinders the realization of the full benefits of CBSD, as the available information on the component level does not sufficiently describe important aspects of software behavior. This paper presents the concepts and case studies of 'signal flows' and 'mode dependent signal flows', which provide crucial software behavior information for real time embedded systems at the component level.

This paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on Features Model and MDA standards, which is called Features-oriented Model-Driven Architecture (FOMDA). This proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. This is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform.

In this paper we are interested in mixed-criticality embedded real-time applications mapped on distributed heterogeneous architectures. The architecture provides both spatial and temporal partitioning, thus enforcing enough separation for the critical applications. With temporal partitioning, each application is allowed to run only within predefined time slots, allocated on each processor. The sequence of time slots for all the applications on a processor are grouped within a Major Frame, which is repeated periodically. We assume that the safety-critical applications (on all criticality levels) are scheduled using static-cyclic scheduling and the non-critical applications are scheduled using fixed-priority preemptive scheduling. We consider that each application runs in a separate partition, and each partition is allocated several time slots on the processors where the application is mapped. We are interested to determine the sequence and size of the time slots within the Major Frame on each processor such that both the safety-critical and non-critical applications are schedulable. We have proposed a Simulated Annealing-based approach to solve this optimization problem. The proposed algorithm has been evaluated using several synthetic and real-life benchmarks. © 2011 ieee.

This paper proposes a rule-based expert system model to assist developers in enhancing the quality of embedded software. The expert system supports semi-automated source code enhancements from multiple perspectives including optimization, reconfiguration to achieve quality of service (QoS) trade-offs, conformance to coding standards, etc., by defining a rule base that is composed of modularized and extensible rule sets. The rule sets are composed of re-usable rules;the rules capture the in-depth knowledge of different software experts. The expert system also adopts a technique to support automated fact generation. This allows the expert system to support processing programs developed in different programming languages.

This paper presents a framework for generic modeling of distributed embedded applications. An application is decomposed into services and mapped on a set of distributed nodes, whereas each node hosts one or more services. Each service is described by four interfaces: a real-time input/output, a configuration and planning (CP), and a diagnostic and management (DM) interface. The overall application is described by a cluster configuration description that specifies the interaction of services within and across nodes. The application requirements, the service properties of a node, and the interaction of the services as well as the application mapping are described formally with XML descriptions. The XML format allows a language-neutral and extensible semantic description of interfaces supporting the implementation of context-aware tools for modeling, scheduling, monitoring, simulation, and validation. A central concept of the model is the interface file system (IFS) that acts as a distributed shared memory and transparently implements the interfaces to services from other nodes. In principle, the communication system that updates the data in the IFS data is not bound to a specific implementation as long as it fulfills the given timing requirements. The presented concepts are applied in a case study that uses the time-triggered fieldbus protocol TTP/A for the implementation of a small sensor fusion application.
