This paper describes the design and implementation of real-time Inter-ORE Protocol suited for multimedia applications on the CORBA environment. Conventional CORBA is not well suited for real-time applications, since it does not define policies nor mechanisms to provide QoS guarantees, and does not define key features that are necessary to support real-time programming. The existing TAO's RIOP for real-time CORBA has a mechanism to transfer QoS information but has lack of support for QoS enforcement to achieve those QoS requests. In order to solve this problem, this paper suggests an integration of GIOP/IIOP with RSVP for real-time CORBA. In this paper, a key feature is presented. eos enforcement, which is provided far real-time CORBA by integrating IIOP with RSVP.

Sensor networks introduce a new application domain and set of challenges in distributed computing including new network-level programming languages, global system abstractions, and general-purpose communication protocols. These challenges are brought about by the tight integration of computation, communication, and distributed real-time interaction with the physical world. With the growing interest in interconnecting different sensor networks across a wide-area communication infrastructure, an overarching challenge becomes one of arriving at an agreed-upon global sensor network architecture that ensures interoperability. Unlike the Internet, where a layered communication stack (namely, the TCP/IP stack) defines the network architecture, a sensor network architecture must unify not only communication interfaces but also programming interfaces, sit-ice network communication and computation functions are tightly intertwined. In that sense, the sensor network architecture refers to a layered stack of distributed computing abstractions. This paper presents an architecture and key considerations in designing and interconnecting local and global sensor networks. Candidate protocols and middleware instantiations are described from the authors' ongoing work that meet the discussed considerations.

service-orientation has been proposed as a way of facilitating the development and integration of increasingly complex and heterogeneous system components. However, there are many new challenges to the dependability community in this new paradigm, such as how individual channels within fault-tolerant systems may invoke common services as part of their workflow, thus increasing the potential for common-mode failure. We propose a scheme that - for the first time - links the technique of provenance with that of multi-version fault tolerance. We implement a large test system and perform experiments with a single-version system, a traditional MVD system, and a provenance-aware MVD system, and compare their results. We show that for this experiment, our provenance-aware scheme results in a much more dependable system than either of the other systems tested, whilst imposing a negligible timing overhead.

Many real-time systems use preemptive priority-based scheduling in their internals to guarantee certain real-time performance. This includes technologies that range from The real-time Specification for Java (RTSJ) to middleware like real-time Common object Request Broker Architecture (RT-CORBA), which offers additional models and policies that blend client and server information. This decision eases the integration of real-time admission tests and dispatching policies in these types of infrastructures. In this paper, we analyze different trade-offs that emerge from the definition of different propagation models for distributed real-time Java. The paper covers technological integration aspects as impact on interfaces and other practical issues mainly related to the performance that this model offers to a real-time application and non-functional overhead. The contribution described in the paper may help in the development of The distributed Specification for Java (DRTSJ). Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We consider the problem of recovering from failures of distributable threads in distributed real-time systems that operate tinder run-time uncertainties including those on thread execution times, thread arrivals, and node failure occurrences. When a thread encounters a node failure, it causes orphans. Under a termination model, the orphans must be detected and aborted, and exceptions must be delivered to farthest, contiguous surviving thread segment for resuming thread execution. Our application/scheduling model includes distributable threads and their exception handlers that are subject to time/utility function (TUF) time constraints and an utility accrual (UA) optimality criterion. A key underpinning of the TUF/UA scheduling paradigm is the notion of "best-effort" where high importance threads are always favored over low importance ones, irrespective of thread urgency. We present a scheduling algorithm called HUA and a thread integrity protocol called TPR. We show that HUA and TPR bound the orphan cleanup and recovery time with bounded loss of the best-effort property. Our implementation experience of HUA/TPR within Sun's distributed real-time Specification for Java demonstrates the algorithm/protocol's effectiveness.

This paper describes the design of a real-time data dispatching system (RTDDS), which is motivated by the needs of a performance guarantee on real-time data services by front-end clients. RTDDS consists of homogeneous machines with a quality of service performance guarantee. We address the resource allocation problems and consider Bin-Packing algorithms to assign requests to machines of RTDDS. Processes scheduling over each machine is done autonomously by SRP-based algorithms. The goal is to maximize the number of concurrent clients and to meet the individual quality of service requirements of clients at the same time. © 2003 ieee.

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation. © 2011 ieee.

To handle the extreme situation that must manage positional information of a very large volume, at least millions, of moving objects, a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture, called the GALIS, which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone, was proposed In this paper, we propose a valid time management and time-zone shifting scheme, which are essential in realizing the long-term location data subsystem of GALIS, but missed in our previous prototype development. We explain how to manage valid time of moving objects to avoid ambiguity of location information. We also describe time-zone shifting algorithm, with three variations, such as RT-TZS, B-TZS and TPB-TZS. Through experiments related with query processing time and CPU utilization, we show the efficiency of the proposed time-zone shifting schemes.

Java is a programming technology which has been extended in order to provide the timeliness required by real-time systems (e.g., RTSJ). There are two RTSJ-based profiles: DRTSJ supporting distributed real-time Java systems and SCJS supporting the development of programs that must be certified. However neither of them considers dynamics characteristics allowing the system to be adapted to the changing environment. distributed safety-critical systems that must provide continuous service (e.g., air-traffic control systems or enterprise and financial applications) require dynamic updates. Dynamic software modification is a useful capability because the application is able to update itself to fix bugs and add new features without requiring a stop and a restart. In this paper, we overview Java solutions considering real-time requirements in service-oriented component models allowing dynamics updates (e.g., OSGi). © 2012 ieee.

service oriented Architecture (SOA) allows multiple and heterogeneous data resources to be integrated within a single service while hiding the implementation details and formats of data resources from users of the service. However, data sources for a service are often distributed geographically and connected with long-latency networks;time and bandwidth consumption of data transportation may have an impact on the system performance. Dynamic data replication is a practical solution to this problem. By replicating data copies to appropriate sites, this approach aims to reduce time and bandwidth consumptions over networks. Existing strategies for dynamic replication are typically based on so-called single-location algorithms for identifying a single site for data replication. In this paper we discuss the issues with single-location strategies in large-scale data integration applications, and examine potential multiple-location schemes. Dynamic multiple-location replication is NP-complete in nature. We therefore transform the multiple-location problem into several classical mathematical problems with different parameter settings, for which efficient approximation algorithms exist. Experimental results indicate that unlike single-location strategies our multiple-location schemes are efficient with respect to access latency and bandwidth consumption, especially when the requesters of a data set are distributed over a large scale of locations.
