Recent work in opening up distributed object systems to make them suitable for applications needing quality of service control has had the side effect of increasing the complexity in setting up, configuring, and initializing such applications. Configuration of distributed applications is more complicated than that of non-distributed applications, simply because of the heterogeneous and distributed nature of the application's components. CORBA and other distributed object middleware simplifies the configuration of distributed object applications, but hides much of the information and control necessary to achieve quality of service (QoS). We describe the techniques and tools that we have developed within our Quality objects (QuO) framework for simplifying the configuration of distributed applications with QoS attributes. We describe a QuO configuration language, as well as the specific configuration needs of particular QoS properties-real-time, security, and dependability-and the support we provide for them. © 2000 ieee.

Java's popularity, facilities and platform independence have made it an interesting language for the real time community. The RTSJ (real-time Specification for Java) is a Java extension to allow the development of real-time systems. RTSJ does not supply any support for the development of real-time distributed systems. The goal of this work is to define support for this type of systems, based on RMI (Remote Method Invocation). However, the high diversity of real-time systems implies that there is not a single RT-RMI definition that satisfies their requirements. This article presents the basics of two real-time RMI approaches: safety critical RMI, to support hard real-time and high integrity requirements, and Quality of service RMI for soft real-time systems, which is based on resource reservation to provide some minimal required quality.

A component model for hard real-time systems: CCM with ARINC-653

The size and complexity of software in safety-critical systems is increasing at a rapid pace. One technology that can be used to mitigate this complexity is component-based software development. However, in spite of the apparent benefits of a component-based approach to development, little work has been done in applying these concepts to hard real-time systems. This paper improves the state of the art by making three contributions: (1) we present a component model for hard real-time systems and define the semantics of different types of component interactions;(2) we present an implementation of a middleware that supports this component model. This middleware combines an open-source CORBA component Model (CCM) implementation (MICO) with ARINC-653: a state-of-the-art real-time operating systems (RTOS) standard, (3) finally;we describe a modeling environment that enables design, analysis, and deployment of component assemblies. We conclude with a discussion of the lessons learned during this exercise. Our experiences point toward extending both the CCM as well as revising the ARINC-653. The increasing use of wireless networks has necessitated the development of a wireless networking infrastructure that supports quality of service (QoS) for multimedia communications. Proxy servers are gaining prominence in facilitating QoS assurance and intelligent resource allocation for multimedia services. In this paper, we propose a proxy-based framework that provides QoS support to mobile users. We describe the overall QoS architecture and implement a number of key QoS functions, including bandwidth allocation and synchronization. In this architecture, admission control is exercised to ensure the long-term availability of resources to mobile clients, where the resources include bandwidth for supporting required presentation rates and buffer for synchronizing media streams. Bandwidth allocation is implemented in Linux Traffic Control using Stochastic Fairness Queueing and Token Bucket Filter disciplines to provide bandwidth guarantees for the multimedia connections. An adaptive synchronization technique is also implemented in the proxy to synchronize multiple streams originating from different sources before transmitting them to the clients for presentation. Finally, a number of quality adaptation strategies that accommodate the diverse requirements and capabilities of clients are described.

QoS (defined as a proper set of quantitative characteristics) analysis is a necessary step for the early verification and validation of an appropriate design, and for taking design decisions about the most rewarding choice, in relation with user requirements. In this paper, we describe an analytical approach for the evaluation of the QoS offered by a family of group communication protocols in a wireless environment, and rise experimental data for feeding our models. Specific indicators have been defined and evaluated, which capture the main characteristics of the protocols and of the environment, focusing our attention on performance and dependability attributes. The defined models account for the correlation among successive packet transmissions due to fading and users mobility. The main purpose of our analysis is to provide a fast, cost effective, and formally sound way to further analyze and understand the protocol behavior and its environment.

The paradigm shift from traditional on-premise software to a service based model has gained significant momentum in the past decade. One such concept, Software as a service (SaaS), delivers the functionality of traditional on-premise software as a service over the web. While a defect or a malfunction in a traditional on-premise application may affect a single user, the affected user base in a SaaS application may span the entire group of customers serviced by the provider. The physical disconnect between end users and the SaaS applications puts onus on service providers to deliver highly dependable systems that are available and reliable at all times. In this paper, we explore the general challenges faced in delivering and analyzing highly dependable service based systems. We quantify the challenges of dependability assessment utilizing a commercial case study. Furthermore, we explore one facet of dependability assessment related to log entries not necessarily related to dependability. We provide a novel approach to log filtering and show that the removal of benign log entries leads to more realistic system dependability analysis. We also show the need to merge multiple types of SaaS logs to support effective analysis. © 2011 ieee.

This document presents a simulation-based method for the development of real time embedded systems. This kind of system is really sensitive to the communication with external environment and the Quality of service (QoS) provided by the used target. So, the method is MDA-based and proposes to separate the concerns, introducing a communication layer with the outside environment, an application layer and a connection layer between these two layers. Then, it is possible to emulate each part on the system in order to validate it.

One cannot image today's life without mechatronic systems, which have to be developed in a joint effort by teams of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, control engineers and software engineers. Often these systems are applied in safety critical environments like in cars or aircrafts. This requires systems that function correctly and do not cause hazardous situations. However, random errors due to wear or external influences cannot be completely excluded. Consequently, we have to perform a hazard analysis for the system. Further, the union of four disciplines in one system requires the development and analysis of the system as a whole. We present a component-based hazard analysis that considers the entire mechatronic system including hardware, i.e. mechanical and electrical components, and software components. Our approach considers the physical properties of different types of flow in mechatronic systems. We have identified reusable patterns for the failure behavior which can be generated automatically. This reduces the effort for the developer. As cycles, e.g. control cycles, are an internal part of every mechatronic system our approach is able to handle cycles. The presented approach has been applied to a real-life case study. © 2011 ieee.

Many critical application systems require reconfigurability in order to adapt under changing environment. To achieve system reconfigurability, it is possible to use adaptation mechanisms that are external to components or to use parameterized components. This paper focuses on making components reconfigurable in terms of QoS tradeoffs. We propose a new component parameterization technique which can transform individual components to reconfigurable ones such that they can support various QoS tradeoffs to achieve overall system QoS requirements. The parameterized components can be used to develop both statically and dynamically reconfigurable systems. The proposed technique is rule based, which provides flexibility and extensibility to enhance and improve the technique. A tool set has been developed based on the proposed technique to achieve semi-automated component parameterization.
