The design and implementation of distributed High Performance computing (HPC) applications is becoming harder as the scale and number of distributed resources and application is growing. Programming abstractions, libraries and frameworks are needed to better overcome that complexity. Moreover when Quality of service (QoS) requirements such as load balancing, efficient resource usage and fault tolerance have to be met, the resulting code is harder to develop, maintain, and reuse, as the code for providing the QoS requirements gets normally mixed with the functionality code. component Technology, on the other hand, allows a better modularity and reusability of applications and even a better support for the development of distributed applications, as those applications can be partitioned in terms of components installed and running (deployed) in the different hosts participating in the system. components also have requirements in forms of the aforementioned non-junctional aspects. In our approach, the code for ensuring these aspects can be automatically generated based on the requirements stated by components and applications, thus leveraging the component implementer of having to deal with these non-functional aspects. In this paper we present the characteristics and the convenience of the generated code for dealing with load balancing, distribution, and fault-tolerance aspects in the context of CORBA-LC. CORBA-LC is a lightweight distributed reflective component model based on CORBA that imposes a peer network model in which the whole network acts as a repository for managing and assigning the whole set of resources: components, CPU cycles, memory, etc.

This paper introduces the service object Request Management Architecture (`SORMA'), its design issues, and its concepts. It is a software framework for rapid development of object-oriented software modules and their integration into stand-alone and distributed applications. SORMA provides an intelligent `object-bus' for inter-operating and sharing distributed computing and robotics hardware. We investigate the question, why too many valuable hardware and software systems and components are a `one-of-a-kind' product which do not find economical re-use. For instance, due to the short life-time of single-usage code, extensive, robust, and verbose exception handling - a prerequisite of incremental work - is often sacrificed. We analyze the `costs of communication' between the component's builder and all its users, who build solutions. We propose to pay much more attention to interactive exploration frameworks, which support rapid, qualified information gain on context-situated, efficient applicability. SORMA demonstrates how to reach self-explaining, built-in interactivity which does not impair the component's real-time efficiency.

The paper deals with providing a specification methodology to enable flexible monitoring in large scale distributed information systems (DIS). The goal is to allow the monitoring of compliance to properties deemed as critical for functioning of a DIS. Since information attacks due to external intrusion and/or component failures often manifest as deviations from critical behaviors expected of a DIS, a violation of compliance to a specified critical property can be viewed as symptomatic of information attacks. Based on this principle, users can prescribe critical properties in the form of event predicates, which are boolean conditions on the externally visible interface state distributed among computation nodes and can be detected by distributed algorithms. Our specification methodology manifests in two facets: i) designing a meta-language which allows the interface behavior of a system to be prescribed through possible occurrences of events in the external environment;and ii) incorporating the specification language into a programming interface that exposes the computation-level states symbolizing the occurrence of events. Any target application can then plugged-in to the generic monitor tool to test for its compliance to critical functionality requirements. The realization of monitor in distributed object-oriented programming languages (such as JAVA) reduces the software development costs of implementing a DIS: due to the ease of specification, development and maintenance of the DIS.

Cloud computing is attracting an increased number of researches in delivering modeling and simulation abilities as a service. Among which, simulation execution as a service (EaaS) is a hot spot. It aims at releasing users from complex running configurations and meanwhile guaranteeing the QoS requirements. Under the motivation, focusing on EaaS for parallel and distributed simulation (PADS) application, the paper proposes a QoS-aware job scheduling framework in two-tier virtualization-based private cloud data center. In PADS EaaS, an adaptive job size adjustment component is designed to realize intelligent and adaptive job size setting for PADS instead of assigning by users. Furthermore, an adaptive deadline-aware job size adjustment algorithm, named ADaSA, is designed in the adjustment component to realize efficient job scheduling with high job responsiveness. ADaSA algorithm firstly computes a minimum processor requested that leads to maximum runtime stretch. It makes sure that more jobs can be scheduled at the same time while satisfying current job's deadline requirements. On other hand, ADaSA tries to pick up all possible idle CPU time in background virtual machines and reserved ones for other jobs. Through that way, more chances are generated to response more jobs in waiting queue. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments with trace-driven simulation. The results show that ADaSA outperforms both cloud-based job scheduling algorithm KCEASY and traditional EASY in terms of response time (up to 90%) and bounded slow down (up to 95%), and at the same time guarantees approximately equivalent deadline-missed rate. ADaSA also outperforms two representative moldable scheduling algorithms in terms of deadline-missed rate (up to 60%).

During the last 10 years, experts in critical infrastructure security have been increasingly directing their focus and attention to the security of control structures such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems in the light of the move toward Internet-connected architectures. However, this more open architecture has resulted in an increasing level of risk being faced by these systems, especially as they became offered as services and utilised via service oriented Architectures (SOA). For example, the SOA-based SCADA architecture proposed by the AESOP project concentrated on facilitating the integration of SCADA systems with distributed services on the application layer of a cloud network. However, whilst each service specified various security goals, such as authorisation and authentication, the current AESOP model does not attempt to encompass all the necessary security requirements and features of the integrated services. This paper presents a concept for an innovative integrated cloud platform to reinforce the integrity and security of SOA-based SCADA systems that will apply in the context of Critical Infrastructures to identify the core requirements, components and features of these types of system. The paper uses the SmartGrid to highlight the applicability and importance of the proposed platform in a real world scenario.

Today component- and service-based technologies play a central role in many aspects of enterprise computing. However, although the technologies used to define, implement, and assemble components have improved significantly over recent years, techniques for verifying systems created from them have changed very little. The correctness and reliability of component-based systems are still usually checked using the traditional testing techniques that were in use before components and services became widespread, and the associated costs and overheads still remain high. This paper presents an approach that addresses this problem by making the system verification process more component-oriented. Based on the notion of built-in tests (BIT)-tests that are packaged and distributed with prefabricated, off-the-shelf components-the approach partially automates the testing process, thereby reducing the level of effort needed to establish the acceptability of the system. The approach consists of a method that defines how components should be written to support and make use of run-time tests, and a resource-aware infrastructure that arranges for tests to be executed when they have a minimal impact on the delivery of system services. After providing an introduction to the principles behind component-based verification and explaining the main features of the approach and its supporting infrastructure, we show by means of a case study how it can reduce system verification effort.
