A new service discovery scheme using mobile agents for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) we have proposed are effective for dissemination and collection of service information because mobile agents can migrate among nodes in spite of topology change in MANETs. In the proposed scheme, mobile agents migrate to one of neighboring nodes in which the number of services collected in the predefined time (called service collection time) is the lowest. This paper investigates the property of the proposed mobile agent based scheme for real-time service dissemination and collection in MANETs through simulation experiments. The simulation results show that the service collection time has the impact on the dissemination time of the proposed scheme in imbalanced location of services, and that the proposed scheme can achieve real-time service dissemination and collection by autonomously adjusting the service collection time.

A software partitioning has been used to develop safety-critical systems in recent years. In addition, software component technologies supporting a software partitioning have been developed. This paper describes the new component technology for embedded software that requires memory protection, which is one of the important features for the partitioning. HR-TECS is a new component technology based on the real-time operating system supporting the static memory layout. Developers can easily allocate components to partitions in order to protect memory areas. In addition, HR-TECS supports inter-partition communications so that developers can implement components without consideration for inter-partition communications. The results of evaluation demonstrate the effectiveness of HR-TECS.

In this work, we present the design and implementation of distributed visualization and collaboration for an immersive 3D visualizer in a component-oriented fashion. The design follows an MVC approach, isolating all the business objects in the lowest level of the application, making it modular and extensible, therefore providing an easier prototyping of functionality and the isolation of complex business logic algorithms. This design as a solution came from the necessity of an existing visualizer with a monolithic implementation, whose maintainability and improvement are impaired due to the coupling between the business logic and the diverse visualization and distribution algorithms. Our design may be reused as an inspiration for other visualizers that wish to reduce the complexity and cost of the development of new business functionality. We implemented the designed visualizer, where we verified both the synchronism of the distributed visualization and the consistency of the collaboration among multiple nodes. We also evaluated the performance impact caused by the distributed visualization.

The proper composition of independently developed components of an embedded real-time system is complicated due to the fact that besides the functional behavior also the non-functional properties and in particular the timing have to be compatible. A number of formal approaches have been developed, which try to guide the upfront decomposition of the embedded real-time system into components such that integration problems related to timing can be excluded. However, the proposed solutions come with severe limitations or require an analysis that does not scale such that these approaches are hardly applicable in practice. In this paper, we present an approach that ensures real-time compatibility by modeling the component behavior with timed automata and by only locally checking that the component is compatible concerning timing. The effort to establish the required guarantees for the integration scales as only local checks are employed. An AUTOSAR application example from the automotive domain is employed to demonstrate the applicability and scalability of the approach.

real-time databases are different from conventional databases in that they have timing constraints on data and on transactions upon the data. The timing constraints of data require that the current status of the real world must be close enough to the state represented by the contents of the database. The timing constraints of transactions are typically expressed in the form of deadline which indicates a certain time in the future by which a transaction must be completed. Conventional data models can not be directly applied to describe the conceptual data model of a real-time database, since there is no mechanism to deal with the representation of timing constraints. A real-time data model should simultaneously satisfy many goals. It should clearly and concisely provide support for specifying timing constraints on data and transactions, semantics of real-time data and real-time transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies to meet the timing constraints defined by the real-time applications. This paper presents a real-time object-oriented data model and its use in designing real-time extensions to the DB4O database management system. This data model supports expression of time-constrained data, time-constrained transactions, concurrency control mechanisms, and transactions scheduling policies. It also can be integrated easily in existing object-oriented method and permits automatic code generation of all the real-time code of an application.

This paper presents a method and tool named the Dataflow Model Auto-Constructor (DMAC). DMAC uses frequent-sequence mining and Dempster-Shafer theory to mine a system execution trace and reconstruct its corresponding dataflow model. distributed system testers then use the resultant dataflow model to analyze performance properties (e.g., end-to-end response time, throughput, and service time) captured in the system execution trace. Results from applying DMAC to different case studies show that DMAC can reconstruct dataflow models that cover at most 94% of the events in the original system execution trace. Likewise, more than 2 sources of evidence are needed to reconstruct dataflow models for systems with multiple execution contexts.

Unlike state-of-the-art Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) upcoming technologies may not base on a static software and system architecture. This is especially true for DAS for truck and trailer combinations were the components needed are distributed over both parts of the articulated vehicle. As a truck might be connected to different trailers changes are very common. In order to handle these changes at runtime the usage of service-oriented Architecture (SOA) is a promising approach. Using this principle the functionalities are encapsulated into services which are Re-Orchestrated whenever the system architecture changes. Since the services in such a system run on small embedded units and are connected through specialized network systems existing SOA frameworks cannot be used here. This paper introduces SODA, a tailored SOA middleware and development process to design runtime adaptive DAS for truck and trailer combinations using services.

Embedded real-time systems with dynamic resource management capabilities are able to adapt to changing resource requirements, resource availability, the occurrence of faults and environmental changes. This enables better resource utilization, more flexibility and increased dependability. Depending on the application domain, reconfiguration decisions must be found and applied within temporal bounds. Although semantic techniques are used to react to unexpected events in standard IT systems, they exhibit a computational complexity and temporal unpredictability that is not suitable for real-time systems. This paper describes a temporally predictable framework for reconfigurable embedded real-time systems. It uses a service-oriented approach to dynamically reconfigure component interactions. Knowledge about the system structure and semantics is provided in a system ontology with relevant information for embedded real-time systems (e.g., transfer delay times, accuracy of relations). The ontology allows to automatically generate service substitutes by exploiting implicit redundancy in the system. Furthermore, an algorithm is presented that searches the ontology for semantically equivalent implementations of failed services. The process of substitution search and substitute service generation is demonstrated with an example from the automotive domain.

In the recent years we have witnessed a proliferation of distributed stream processing systems that need to operate efficiently, even when data bursts occur. Examples include road traffic networks, processing of financial feeds, network monitoring and real-time sensor data analysis systems. An important challenge in managing these systems is effective resource management and meeting the QoS demands of the stream processing applications under different workload conditions, even under bursts. In this paper we present our approach that aims to predict the execution times of the distributed stream processing applications by taking into account the effects of the bursts and what is the typical workload of the stream processing system. Our approach builds application data rate patterns at run-time and predicts the effect of the burst on the performance of the applications, to identify whether there is a need to react on the onset of a burst. Our detailed experimental results over our Synergy middleware illustrate that our approach is practical, depicts good performance and has low resource overhead.

While Cluster-Tree network topologies look promising for WSN applications with timeliness and energy-efficiency requirements, we are yet to witness its adoption in commercial and academic solutions. One of the arguments that hinder the use of these topologies concerns the lack of flexibility in adapting to changes in the network, such as in traffic flows. This paper presents a solution to provide these networks with the ability to self-adapt to different bandwidth and latency requirements, imposed by traffic flows, by changing the cluster's duty-cycle and scheduling. Importantly, our approach enables a network to change its cluster scheduling without requiring long inaccessibility times or the re-association of the nodes. We show how to apply our methodology to the case of ieee 802.15.4/ZigBee cluster-tree WSNs without significant changes to the protocol. Finally, we analyze and demonstrate the validity of our methodology through a comprehensive simulation and experimental validation using commercially available technology on a Structural Health Monitoring application scenario.
