We give an introduction and survey of a formal modeling and verification approach that has been successfully applied to time-triggered protocols. This method allows us to capture and reason about real-time properties of distributed systems. It relies on the modeling concept of calendar similar to what has been used for a long time in discrete event simulation. It is also supported by efficient symbolic verification tools provided by the SAL environment. We present the basis of the modeling method and discuss two related verification approaches for analyzing complex, real-time distributed systems.

service oriented architecture (SOA) allows multiple and heterogeneous data resources to be integrated within a single service while hiding the implementation details and formats of data resources from users of the service. However, data sources for a service are often distributed geographically and connected with long-latency networks; time and bandwidth consumption of data transportation may have an impact on the system performance. Dynamic data replication is a practical solution to this problem. By replicating data copies to appropriate sites, this approach aims to reduce time and bandwidth consumptions over networks. Existing strategies for dynamic replication are typically based on so-called single-location algorithms for identifying a single site for data replication. In this paper we discuss the issues with single-location strategies in large-scale data integration applications, and examine potential multiple-location schemes. Dynamic multiple-location replication is NP-complete in nature. We therefore transform the multiple-location problem into several classical mathematical problems with different parameter settings, for which efficient approximation algorithms exist. Experimental results indicate that unlike single-location strategies our multiple-location schemes are efficient with respect to access latency and bandwidth consumption, especially when the requesters of a data set are distributed over a large scale of locations.

The real-time specification for Java (RTSJ) is becoming a popular choice in the world of real-time programming. However, the complexities introduced by RTSJ bring the needs for an extensive framework comprising all the aspects of RTSJ development. As the first contribution of this paper, we present a real-time component model directly fitting the needs of RTSJ. Our motivation is to clearly separate real-time and business concerns of applications. We further argue that the RTSJ concerns need to be considered at early stages of architecture design in order to mitigate the complexities of the implementation phase. Therefore, as our second contribution, we propose a design process introducing gradually RTSJ concepts into the architecture. We are thus able to alleviate the development of real-time systems and to tailor them for different real-time conditions. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of our solution on an example scenario.

A real-time database is a database in which both the data and the operations upon the data may have timing constraints. The design of this kind of database requires the introduction of new concepts to modelize both data structures and the dynamic behavior of the database. In this paper, we propose an UML2.0 profile, entitled UML-RTDB, allowing the design of structural model for a real-time database. One of the main advantages of UML-RTDB is its capacity to take into account real-time database properties through specialized concepts in rigourous, easy and expressive manner.

Today many embedded computer applications are developed under the assumptions that the hardware works always as described in the documentation, the operating system is free of design errors and the clients use the system as specified. These assumptions lead to systems that are fragile - they break if even a single transistor out of a billion transistors chip occasionally malfunctions or a sporadic Heisenbug [J. Gray, 1986] occurs in the operating system.

The ever-increasing functionality and the nonfunctional constraints that must be satisfied by embedded systems lead to an enormous growth in the complexity at the system level In this paper we investigate the notion of cognitive complexity and argue that it is not the embedded system, but the models of the embedded system that must be simple and understandable. The introduction of appropriate levels of abstraction in modeling and the associated concept formation help to reduce the emerging complexity by focusing on the relevant properties and omitting irrelevant detail, thus leading to a simpler representation of the evolving artifact. In the second part of the paper we present examples of basic-level concepts that we find essential in the design of distributed embedded systems and summarize the insights by presenting a set of concise design patterns that support the component-based design of embedded systems.

The time-triggered paradigm encompasses a set of concepts and principles that support the design of dependable real-time systems. By using the properties of physical time and the mechanism of clock synchronization, coordinated interaction between distributed nodes can be facilitated. This paper briefly explains the time-triggered approach, defines a taxonomy for real-time requirements and discusses seven protocols that provide time-triggered features. Finally, two application examples are given that show the potential of the time-triggered approach.

Computation, as expressed in modern programming languages, obscures many resource management problems. Memory is provided without bound by stacks and heaps. Power and energy consumption are not the concern of a programmer. Even when these resource management problems are important, there is no way to talk about them within the semantics of a programming language. time, however, is not quite like these other resources. First, barring metaphysical discourse, it is genuinely unbounded. To say that "the available time per unit time is bounded" is tautological, yet this is effectively what people say when they manage it as a bounded resource. Second, time gets expended whether we use it or not. It cannot be conserved and saved for later. This is true up to a point with, say, battery power. Batteries leak, so their power cannot be indefinitely conserved, but designers rarely optimize a system to use as much battery power before it leaks away as they can. Yet that is what they do with time.

Many research works have focused on developing multimedia applications such as video conferencing and video-on-demand (VoD). From this trend, we see that the VoD service will become the main issue in future. However, service providers don't efficiently provide VoD services for a great number of clients yet. One of the reasons is the high cost in providing VoD services. Because a multimedia service consumes wide bandwidth in spite of great advances of video compression, network bandwidth resource must significantly be spent to maintain multiple clients concurrently. To overcome this problem, we proposed a new transmission method using the broadcast, named as a poly harmonic staggered broadcasting (PHSB) method. The proposed method is an efficient transmission method that has a simple structure of the staggered broadcasting method and substantially improved bandwidth efficiency of the poly harmonic broadcasting method. The numerical results show that the viewer's waiting time of the PHSB method is close to the waiting time of the harmonic broadcasting method which theoretically has the best bandwidth efficiency. Furthermore, the maximum buffer requirements of this can be adapted by adjusting the short front part of a video size.
