component based software development (CBSD) has been established in the development of automotive real-time embedded applications at Bosch. CBSD together with software product line (SPL) practice has improved software reuse, productivity, quality and complexity management, by raising the level of abstraction for software constructions and by sharing services. Although CBSD has contributed to the aforementioned improvement in the software development practice, the existing Bosch component model often requires software developers to take a close look at the implementation including models (e.g., ASCET-MD ) and even complex source code to understand software behavior and dependencies when reusing and adapting software components. This hinders the realization of the full benefits of CBSD, as the available information on the component level does not sufficiently describe important aspects of software behavior. This paper presents the concepts and case studies of 'signal flows' and 'mode dependent signal flows', which provide crucial software behavior information for real time embedded systems at the component level.

This paper introduces ReDAC, a new algorithm for dynamic reconfiguration of multi-threaded applications. In order to achieve high reliability and availability, distributed component software has to support dynamic reconfiguration. Typical examples include the application of hot-fixes to deal with security vulnerabilities. ReDAC can be implemented on top of the modern component-platforms Java and .NET. We extend the statical term component, denoting a unit of deployment, to runtime by defining a capsule (runtime component instance) to be a set of interconnected objects. This allows us to apply dynamic updates at the level of components during runtime without stopping whole applications. Using system-wide unique identifiers for threads (logical thread IDs), we can detect and also bring capsules into a reconfigurable state by selectively blocking threads, relying on data structures maintained by additional logic integrated into the capsules using aspect-oriented programming. An important contribution of this paper is that ReDAC supports the dynamic reconfiguration of distributed multi-threaded and re-entrant components with cyclic call dependencies.

timeliness-guaranteed computing considering the worst case can hardly be accomplished at run time because of the uncertainty caused by resource sharing, asynchronous events and conflicting timing constraints between tasks. An easier way to reach it is to do some off-line analysis from design time with predictable characteristics of tasks. The TMO model supporting time-triggered (SpM) and message-triggered (SvM) member-threads is a well-known real-time object-oriented task model that aims the design-time guaranteed computing. In this paper, a new efficient task serializer that allocates the executions of time-triggered periodic tasks of multiple TMOs without delay and preemption to avoid resource conflicts is presented. The serializer tries to find scheduling scenarios in that each SpM is executed at its exact trigger-time without delay based on the given WCET. This is done by recasting the initial offsets of SpMs to avoid overlaps of executions. And several methods to handle SvMs according to the types of SvMs using the serializer are also proposed.

A coordination procedure is proposed for a multi-robot rescue system that performs real-time exploration over disaster areas. real-time exploration means that every robot exploring the area always has a communication path to human operators standing by a monitor station and that the communication path is configured by ad hoc wireless networking. The proposed system procedure consists of the autonomous classification of robots into search and relay types and behavior algorithms for each class of robot. Search robots explore the areas and relay robots act as relay terminals between search robots and monitor station. The rule of the classification and the behavior algorithm refer to the forwarding table of each robot constructed for ad hoc networking. Computer simulations are executed with the decision-theoretic approach as the exploration strategy of search robots.

The technology supporting multiplayer online games (MOGs) has greatly improved in the past few years. This represents great news both for players all over the world and for researchers that are struggling behind tough problems in real-time distributed systems. Indeed, MOGs represent a peculiar class of distributed systems, sharing features, requirements, challenges, and thereby also feasible solutions. To this aim, we focus on issues and state-of art solutions related to a crucial aspect in MOG deployment: the synchronization of its nodes. In particular, we review techniques able to guarantee that the system evolves in a quick and consistent way and highlight how they can be made more effective by exploiting specific game features. To further support this claim, we also present results from an experimental evaluation we performed.

Predictable deployment and configuration (D&C) of components in response to dynamic environmental changes or system mode changes is essential for ensuring open distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) system real-time QoS. This paper provides three contributions to research on the predictability of D&C for component-based open DRE systems. First, we describe how the dependency relationships among different components and their criticality levels can cause deployment order inversion of tasks, which impedes deployment predictability. Second, we describe how to minimize D&C latency of mission-critical tasks with a multi-graph dependency tracing and graph recomposition algorithm called CaDAnCE. Third, we empirically evaluate the effectiveness of CaDAnCE on a representative open DRE system case study based on NASA Earth Science Enterprise's Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission system. Our results show that CaDAnCE avoids deployment order inversion while incurring negligible (<1%) performance overhead, thereby significantly improving D&C predictability.

time-triggered communication is a favored design strategy for safety-critical systems. However, the startup of time-triggered systems is a significant concern, since the time-line from which fault-tolerance is supported must be established in segmented mediums, e.g. multi-hop networks. The startup problems are particularly challenging since clique formation, i.e. the establishment of disjoint time-triggered communication sets, may be systematically induced. This paper presents an alternative startup solution based upon a braided-ring architecture called BRAIN (braided ring availability integrity network). Segmentation-induced cliques are particularly prevalent in this architecture, since each node presents a potential medium break. The described strategy dramatically improves startup performance in relation to current approaches by leveraging the cooperative action of adjacent nodes during startup and high-integrity data propagation.

An important part of implementing device drivers is to control the interrupt facilities of the hardware platform and to program interrupt handlers. Current methods for handling interrupts in Java use a server thread waiting for the VM to signal an interrupt occurrence. It means that the interrupt is handled at a later time, which has some disadvantages. We present constructs that allow interrupts to be handled directly and not at a later point decided by a scheduler. A desirable feature of our approach is that we do not require a native middelware layer but can handle interrupts entirely with Java code. We have implemented our approach using an interpreter and a Java processor, and give an example demonstrating its use.

As Moore's law comes to an end, multi-processor (MP) systems are becoming increasingly important in embedded systems design, hence real-time schedulability analysis for MP systems has become an important research topic. In this paper, we present an exact method for schedulability analysis of global multiprocessor scheduling with either fixed-priority (FP) or earliest-deadline-first (EDF) algorithms using the model-checker NuSMV. Compared to safe but pessimistic schedulability tests based on processor utilization bounds, model-checking can provide an exact answer to the schedulability of a taskset, as well as quantitative information on each task's best-case and worst- case response times.

Modelling languages and development frameworks give support for functional and structural description of software architectures. But quality-aware applications require languages which allow expressing QoS as a first-class concept during architecture design and service composition, and to extend existing tools and infrastructures adding support for modelling, evaluating, managing and monitoring QoS aspects. In addition to its functional behaviour and internal structure, the developer of each service must consider the fulfilment of its quality requirements. If the service is flexible, the output quality depends both on input quality and available resources (e.g., amounts of CPU execution time and memory). From the software engineering point of view, modelling of quality-aware requirements and architectures require modelling support for the description of quality concepts, support for the analysis of quality properties (e.g. model checking and consistencies of quality constraints, assembly of quality), tool support for the transition from quality requirements to quality-aware architectures, and from quality-aware architecture to service run-time infrastructures. Quality management in run-time service infrastructures must give support for handling quality concepts dynamically. QoS-aware modeling frameworks and QoS-aware runtime management infrastructures require a common evolution to get their integration.
