service overlays that support distributed stream processing applications are increasingly being deployed in wide-area environments. The inherent heterogeneous, dynamic and large-scale nature of these systems makes it difficult to meet the Quality of service (QoS) requirements of the distributed stream processing applications. In this paper we address the load balancing problem for distributed stream processing applications and present a decentralized and adaptive algorithm that allows the composition of distributed stream processing applications on the fly across a large-scale system, while satisfying their QoS demands. The algorithm fairly distributes the load on the resources and adapts dynamically to changes in the resource utilization or the QoS requirements of the applications. Our experimental results demonstrate the scalability, efficiency and performance of our approach.

service-oriented Architecture has the major advantage of enabling rapid composition of distributed applications from various services, and has become increasingly popular for many large-scale service-based systems in various application areas, including scientific collaboration, e-business, health care, military, and homeland security. Situation awareness (SA W) is the capability of the entities in a service-based system to be aware of the situation changes and automatically adapt themselves to such changes to satisfy user requirements, including security and privacy. The continuing evolutions of the entities and environment makes SA W one of the most desired features to support dynamic adaptive computing in service-based systems. In this paper, the relationship between contexts/situations and services in situation-aware service-based systems is identified and at? extension of OWL-S with situation ontology, called SAW-OWL-S, incorporates SA W in service specifications is presented. An approach to generating service specifications for situation-aware service-based systems using SAW-OWL-S and the system diagram of situation-aware service-based systems using SAW-OWL-S are presented.

The TMO (time-triggered Message-triggered object) model is a well-known real-time object model for distributed timeliness computing. In a couple of years ago, we developed a Linux-based real-time kernel, named TMO-Linux, supporting deadline driven executions of TMO. TMO-Linux and its distributed IPC subsystem have been used well in developing networked control systems consisting of cooperating embedded devices, but there have difficulties in executing some TMO applications accurately due to the lack of timeliness in distributed communications. To overcome this problem, we newly developed a real-time distributed IPC over ieee1394 for the TMO-Linux kernel. In the new system, predictable delivery services for real-time messages are provided by isochronous transmissions of ieee1394. To implement predictable delivery services, each node is set to have its own isochronous channel for receiving data that is allocated to a fixed time-slot bandwidth in an ieee1394 flame. This paper presents an implementation technique for the ieee]394-based real-time distributed IPC and collaborations of computing nodes using TMO-Linux.

Developing real-time software for large-scale distributed real-time and embedded (DRE) systems is hard due to variabilities that arise from (1) integration with various subsystems based on different programming languages and hardware, OS, middleware platforms, (2) fine tuning the system to satisfy a range of customer requirements, such as various quality-of-service (QoS) properties, and (3) changing functional and QoS properties of the system based on available system resources. This paper describes our experience applying model-driven development (MDD) tools and QoS-enabled component middleware technologies to address domain- and middleware-specific variability, challenges in an inventory tracking system, which manages the storage and flow of items in warehouses. Our results show that (1) coherent integration of MDD tools and component middleware can provide a productive software process for developing DRE systems by modularizing and composing variability concerns and (2) significant challenges remain that must be overcome to apply these technologies to a broader range of DRE systems.

Web services provide the potential to offer interoperability of distributed business-to-business application integration between autonomous organisations, regardless of platforms, operating systems or languages. For both user and vendor organisations, this raises immediate problems of trust, security, privacy and prevention of malicious attacks. Until these problems are addressed and solved properly, the use of Web services will be severely restricted because no-one will trust them. We describe in this paper a service-oriented architecture and an Attack-Tolerant Information Retrieval (ATIR) service which tackles certain classes of privacy problems. In particular, we address the problem of protecting a user against malicious attacks upon an information service when the user retrieves some information from the service. Although there have been many theoretical solutions to certain aspects of this problem, the results have yet to be adapted to real systems. We report our experience of integrating the ATIR service with Taverna, a popular workflow system used amongst the UK e-Science/Grid computing community to support secure information retrieval in the biology context. Performance studies show that the overhead of ATIR server-side processing is trivial (< 5%) in comparison with the total processing time of the integrated Taverna. Our experimental results also show that the major processing overhead is caused by the Taverna enactor operations which consume no less than 50% of the total processing time.

This paper proposes a rule-based expert system model to assist developers in enhancing the quality of embedded software. The expert system supports semi-automated source code enhancements from multiple perspectives including optimization, reconfiguration to achieve quality of service (QoS) trade-offs, conformance to coding standards, etc., by defining a rule base that is composed of modularized and extensible rule sets. The rule sets are composed of re-usable rules;the rules capture the in-depth knowledge of different software experts. The expert system also adopts a technique to support automated fact generation. This allows the expert system to support processing programs developed in different programming languages.

For distributed real-time systems, adequate profiling tools are exceedingly rare. The sheer variety and low-level nature of these systems impede the adoption of standard, general-purpose tools for performance analysis and visualization. Although much research has been devoted to profiling parallel clusters and supercomputers, the literature virtually ignores the real-time domain. Correspondingly, a handful of commercial tools is available for profiling realtime software, but they invariably make a single-node assumption and are unable to cope with distributed environments. We examine the state of performance analysis and discuss why profilers are conspicuously absent in the field of distributed real-time systems. We then explore how developers of these systems could benefit from graphical profiling tools with automatic instrumentation and data collection. Toward that end, we demonstrate the prototype of a performance visualization tool called "Bacara," the second addition to our suite of tools for Visual Analysis of distributed real-time systems, or VADR (va'dar).

Guaranteeing response times of real-time (RT) distributed computing systems has been recognized as one of the biggest challenges by the RT software research community for three decades. The concept of a hybrid approach that combines analytical derivation approaches and testing-based statistical derivation approaches in a symbiotic form for meeting this challenge was presented in recent years. However, concrete practical hybrid approaches are still in early stages of development. One such approach pursued by the authors and their collaborators is presented here. This paper focuses on the cases of deriving tight execution time bounds of the segments of object methods which do not involve calls for services from the operating system kernel and middleware. A case-study that demonstrates how the adopted approach works in handling a simple practical application is also presented.

To handle the extreme situation that must manage positional information of a very large volume, at least millions, of moving objects, a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture, called the GALIS, which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone, was proposed In this paper, we propose a valid time management and time-zone shifting scheme, which are essential in realizing the long-term location data subsystem of GALIS, but missed in our previous prototype development. We explain how to manage valid time of moving objects to avoid ambiguity of location information. We also describe time-zone shifting algorithm, with three variations, such as RT-TZS, B-TZS and TPB-TZS. Through experiments related with query processing time and CPU utilization, we show the efficiency of the proposed time-zone shifting schemes.

This paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on Features Model and MDA standards, which is called Features-oriented Model-Driven Architecture (FOMDA). This proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. This is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform.
