This paper presents an overview of the real time markup language (RTML). RTML is a XML profile which provides the syntactic representation for describing the semantics of real time data for exchange over distributed networked real time systems. For the basis of interoperability, this profile is described in the XML schema language. This paper describes the background of this work and shows how the vocabularies are developed, and how it derives the extensibility of XML schema in aiding the definition of data in real time systems in order to achieve the goal of interoperability

Guaranteeing response times of real-time (RT) distributed computing systems has been recognized as one of the biggest challenges by the RT software research community for three decades. The concept of a hybrid approach that combines analytical derivation approaches and testing-based statistical derivation approaches in a symbiotic form for meeting this challenge was presented in recent years. However, concrete practical hybrid approaches are still in early stages of development. One such approach pursued by the authors and their collaborators is presented here. This paper focuses on the cases of deriving tight execution time bounds of the segments of object methods which do not involve calls for services from the operating system kernel and middleware. A case-study that demonstrates how the adopted approach works in handling a simple practical application is also presented

This paper proposes a rule-based expert system model to assist developers in enhancing the quality of embedded software. The expert system supports semi-automated source code enhancements from multiple perspectives including optimization, reconfiguration to achieve quality of service (QoS) trade-offs, conformance to coding standards, etc., by defining a rule base that is composed of modularized and extensible rule sets. The rule sets are composed of re-usable rules; the rules capture the in-depth knowledge of different software experts. The expert system also adopts a technique to support automated fact generation. This allows the expert system to support processing programs developed in different programming languages

The network connectivity is a basic requirement while implementing fundamental communication and storage abstractions in P2P networks, featuring scalability and fault-tolerance. The quality of services of abstractions like for example multicast, publish/subscribe, group membership or persistent storage is strongly related to the connectivity degree of the underlying overlay. Intuitively, a higher overlay connectivity ensures a reinforced reliability and consequently, the deployment of distributed applications with real-time constraints on top of these overlays becomes feasible even in environments characterized by a high dynamicity, i.e., nodes arriving and departing at a high rate. Our paper proposes a novel delta-connected DHT-free P2P overlay. Our overlay offers strong connectivity guarantees despite the system dynamicity. The construction and the maintenance of our overlay is completely decentralized and handled strictly locally, through deterministic algorithms whose correctness is rigorously proved

distributed real-time computing is one of the enabling technologies in establishing a team of autonomous robots. A team of soccer playing robots, Paderkicker, contains many computing nodes handling environment perception, artificial intelligence, team coordination, autonomous actuation, and interactions with external entities such as a remote server. Robots must act with varying degrees of autonomy in real-time. The time-triggered message-triggered object (TMO) programming scheme offers a high-level high-precision approach to programming of distributed real-time computing operations. The TMO programmer can apply deadlines to method executions and result-arrivals in a straightforward way. He is thus relieved from dealing with low-level resource allocation details and can show considerably increased productivity. This paper describes a TMO structuring approach for constructing teams of autonomous robots. A TMO network architecture is described for the Paderkicker team

This paper presents the evaluation of a multithread distributed real-time object-oriented platform. A communication API was developed to increase functionalities of an API that implements the real-time specification for Java standard, extending it to cover embedded distributed applications. real-time restrictions of the communication are ensured by a time-out mechanism. The API can be adapted to be used with different underlying network and physical mediums. The development focused on restrictive embedded platforms with low performance and small memory. An evaluation in terms of the fulfillment of timing constraints, and memory footprint is presented for a CAN-bus network. The results also demonstrate the timely correctness provided by the communication API running over an RTSJ implementation

The architecture of SOA-based applications is different from traditional software architecture where the architecture is mainly static. The architecture of an SOA-based application is dynamic, i.e., the application may be composed at runtime using existing services. Thus SOA has provided a new direction for software architecture study, where the architecture is determined at runtime and architecture can be dynamically changed at runtime to meet the new software requirements. This paper proposes an architecture classification scheme for SOA-based applications. Using this classification, several well-known SOA-based applications are reviewed including the architectures proposed and adopted by major computer companies and standard organizations. The architecture classification provides a unified way to evaluate a variety of architectures for SOA-based applications

To communicate between heterogeneous computer systems, mechanisms for data conversion are necessary. In this paper we present a portable, asymmetric data conversion method that is suitable for remote testing frameworks in embedded systems development. The described method takes the resource limitations of embedded systems into account by doing the data conversion at the testing host. The method can be implemented as platform-independent source code and it avoids the need of recompiling the code of a communication partner if the code of the other communication partner is migrated to a different platform

UML through its profiling mechanism is well adapted for the modeling of real-time software requirements and designs. It is becoming the de facto standard. On the other hand, several real-time schedulability analysis techniques have been proposed in the literature. One of the current research challenges is in bridging the gap between the UML/SPT models and the well-established real-time schedulability analysis techniques. In this paper, we propose an MDA-compliant approach addressing this issue. We develop an UML metamodel for a well-established schedulability analysis technique. We propose a rule-based transformation between the UML/SPT schedulability analysis sub-profile metamodel and this metamodel. We illustrate our approach with an example

For distributed real-time systems, adequate profiling tools are exceedingly rare. The sheer variety and low-level nature of these systems impede the adoption of standard, general-purpose tools for performance analysis and visualization. Although much research has been devoted to profiling parallel clusters and supercomputers, the literature virtually ignores the real-time domain. Correspondingly, a handful of commercial tools is available for profiling realtime software, but they invariably make a single-node assumption and are unable to cope with distributed environments. We examine the state of performance analysis and discuss why profilers are conspicuously absent in the field of distributed real-time systems. We then explore how developers of these systems could benefit from graphical profiling tools with automatic instrumentation and data collection. Toward that end, we demonstrate the prototype of a performance visualization tool called "Bacara", the second addition to our suite of tools for visual analysis of distributed real-time systems, or VADR (vamacr'der)
