We present a schedulable garbage collection for realtime applications in virtual machine environments. The design objective is to make the pause time caused by garbage collection operations controllable, and the invocation of garbage collection predictable. Thus, real-time applications can be schedulable along with garbage collection. We develop a prototype for a schedulable garbage collection in MONO CLI execution environment. A cost model of garbage collection is established based on measured WCET to predict the execution time and overhead of garbage collection operations. A scheduling algorithm of garbage collection and application tasks is presented to illustrate how the time and memory constraints of real-time systems can be met. The experiment result of the scheduling algorithm for a periodic task set on the prototype is included in the paper

E-business organizations commonly trade services together with quality of service (QoS) guarantees that are often dynamically agreed upon prior to service provisioning. Violating agreed QoS levels incurs penalties and hence service providers agree to QoS requests only after assessing the resource availability. Thus the system should, in addition to providing the services: (i) monitor resource availability, (ii) assess the affordability of a requested QoS level, and (iii) adapt autonomically to QoS perturbations which might undermine any assumptions made during assessment. This paper will focus on building such a system for reliably multicasting messages of arbitrary size over a loss-prone network of arbitrary topology such as the Internet. The QoS metrics of interest will be reliability, latency and relative latency. We meet the objectives (i)-(iii) by describing a network monitoring scheme, developing two multicast protocols, and by analytically estimating the achievable latencies and reliability in terms of controllable protocol parameters. Protocol development involves extending in two distinct ways an existing QoS-adaptive protocol designed for a single packet. Analytical estimation makes use of experimentally justified approximations and their impact is evaluated through simulations. As the protocol extension approaches are complementary in nature, so are the application contexts they are found best suited to; e.g., one is suited to small messages while the other to large messages

Many scheduling algorithms have been studied to guarantee the time constraints of real-time processes. Scheduling decision of these algorithms is usually based on parameters which are assumed to be crisp. However, in many circumstances the values of these parameters are vague. The vagueness of parameters suggests that we make use of fuzzy logic to decide in what order the requests should be executed to better utilize the system and as a result reduce the chance of a request being missed. We have proposed a new fuzzy algorithm called highest fuzzy priority first. The performance of this algorithm is compared with the well-known earliest deadline first algorithm through simulation. For both algorithms, tasks are considered to be non-preemptable. Simulation results show that this fuzzy approach outperforms the earliest deadline first has algorithm in that it decreases the number of missed deadlines and serves more important tasks better

This paper tackles the problem of ever changing embedded systems non-functional requirements, specially the architectural ones. It proposes a solution based on features model and MDA standards, which is called features-oriented model-driven architecture (FOMDA). This proposal can be used to help application designer in defining the mappings and transformations of UML models to as many target platforms as wished. This is done by configuring model-to-model and model-to-code transformations over tiers, where every tier represents some target platform properties that the system must be mapped and transformed to. To validate the proposal a case study related to the development of an embedded real-time system is presented, detailing how to transform a generic high-level UML model to a model specific for a given target platform. Obtained results are optimistic and conclude that the FOMDA approach can make designers re-think their current development process to make it more decoupled from a specific target platform

To handle the extreme situation that must manage positional information of a very large volume, at least millions, of moving objects, a cluster-based scalable distributed computing system architecture, called the GALIS, which consists of multiple data processors, each dedicated to keeping records relevant to a different geographical zone and a different time zone, was proposed. In this paper, we propose a valid time management and time-zone shifting scheme, which are essential in realizing the long-term location data subsystem of GALIS, but missed in our previous prototype development. We explain how to manage valid time of moving objects to avoid ambiguity of location information. We also describe time-zone shifting algorithm, with three variations, such as RT-TZS, B-TZS and TPB-TZS. Through experiments related with query processing time and CPU utilization, we show the efficiency of the proposed time-zone shifting schemes

A transactional agent is a mobile agent to manipulate objects distributed on computers with some type of commitment condition. For example, a transactional agent commits only if at least one object could be successfully manipulated in the at-least-one commitment condition. Computers may stop by fault while networks are assumed to be reliable. In the client-server model, servers can be fault-tolerant according to traditional replication and checkpointing technologies. However, an application program cannot be performed if a client computer is faulty. An application program can be performed on another operational computer even if a computer is faulty in the transactional agent model. For example, a transactional agent can move to another operational computer if some destination computer where the agent to move is faulty. There are kinds of faulty computers for a transactional agent, current, destination, and sibling computers where a transactional agent now exist, will move, and has visited, respectively. We discuss how the transactional agent can be tolerant of the types of faults. We show how a program reliably manipulating objects can be realized in a mobile agent in presence of computer faults

This paper describes the high-level execution and communication support provided in JGrid, a service-oriented dynamic grid framework. One of its core services, the compute service, is the key component in creating dynamic computational grid systems that enable the execution of sequential and parallel interactive grid applications. A fundamental set of program execution modes supported by the service is described, then a programming model and its corresponding application programming interface is presented. The execution support of the service architecture is described in detail illustrating how remote evaluation and run-time task spawning are provided. The paper also shows in detail how task spawning and dynamic proxies can be used for a service-oriented communication mechanism for coarse-grain parallel grid applications

Software technology has evolved rapidly to satisfy the demands from the expansion of various applications of information technology. From the applications perspective, the demands for producing high-quality software for real-time systems, distributed computing infrastructure, internet, mobile and ubiquitous (or pervasive) computing systems, etc. are enormous. The quality involved may include not only robustness, high performance and security, but also light weight, composibility and situation awareness. During the last three decades, the phenomenal progress and changes in software technology have been obvious. New paradigms and techniques in developing and maintaining software systems have been introduced, such as object- and aspect-oriented software development, component-based software development, situation-aware and adaptive software, middleware, service-oriented architecture and secure software engineering.
