To cope with the increasing design complexity of modern embedded real-time systems, Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques are being proposed and applied within the domain of embedded and real-time systems. This paper discusses a design approach that combines MDE and concepts of the Aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) to deal with functional and non-functional requirements in a modularized way using higher abstraction levels. This approach covers activities from requirements engineering to the implementation phases, allowing early verification and simulation of system specifications. The proposed MDE approach is supported by a set of CASE tools. A configurable tool for code generation is capable of creating source code for different target platforms from the models produced in earlier design phases. Besides generating code for functional requirements handling, the tool also weaves aspects' adaptations, which modify the generated code to handle non-functional requirements. Furthermore, a tool to execute automatically a set of test cases is used to simulate and exercise the system behavior already in the specification and modeling phase. This tools allows engineers to verify if the system model is being specified according to the requirements, identifying whether the functional requirements are being fulfilled. The proposed approach has been successfully applied to the development of embedded real-time systems for different real-world applications. Obtained results show an improvement concerning the modularization of system's requirements handling, leading to an increased reuse of previously created artifacts.

Middleware designed for use in distributed real-time and Embedded (DRE) systems enable cost and development time reductions by providing simple communications abstractions and hiding operating system-level networking API details from developers. While current middleware technologies can hide many low-level details, designers must provide a static configuration for the system's underlying network in order to achieve required performance characteristics. This has not been a problem for many types of DRE systems where the configuration of the system is relatively fixed from the factory (e.g., aircraft or naval vessels). However for truly open systems (i.e., systems where end users can add or substract components at runtime) the standard static network configuration approach cannot guarantee that required performance will be met because network resource demands are not fully known a priori. Open systems with stringent performance requirements need middleware that can dynamically manage the underlying network configuration automatically in response to changing demands. Fortunately, recent trends in networking have resulted in a wide variety of networking equipment that expose a standardized low-level interface to their configuration via the OpenFlow protocol. In this paper we discuss how OpenFlow can be leveraged by DRE middleware to automatically provide performance guarantees. In order to make the discussion concrete, we describe the architecture of our prototype middleware MIDAS as well as the details of one example network resource management strategy. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach via performance assesment of a simple DRE application using our MIDAS and commerically available OpenFlow hardware.

Mobile devices performing mission-critical functions at the tactical edge, such as those employed by first responders, military personnel, and law enforcement, operate in environments that are vastly different from enterprise computing environments. In spite of the differences in resource availability, threat models, vulnerabilities, information formats, and communication protocols, there is a great advantage to (and great demand for) enabling information exchange between the tactical edge and enterprise environments. Creating a specialized mobile version of each desired service that incorporates an appropriate level of security protection and quality of service (QoS) for the tactical users is one possibility. Such an approach is not cost effective, however, as the market for a given tactical application is small compared to the commercial user base for mobile applications and services. Furthermore, the need for information or services from the enterprise by tactical users can be too ad hoc and time critical, e.g., during disaster response, to support developing a specialized version. Finally, service specialization for mobile web access covers only one of multiple information dissemination and access patterns that arise in tactical operations. This paper presents the design and a prototype implementation of a gateway solution that provides secure tactical-enterprise information exchange and handles the differences in resource availability, QoS requirements, communication formats, and protocols.

Big data platforms have grown popular for real-time stream processing on distributed clusters and clouds. However, execution of sensitive streaming applications on shared computing resources increases their vulnerabilities, and may lead to data leaks and injection of spurious logic that can compromise these applications. Here, we adopt Moving Target Defense (MTD) techniques into Fast Data platforms, and propose MTD strategies by which we can mitigate these attacks. Our strategies target the platform, application and data layers, which make these reusable, rather than the OS, virtual machine, or hardware layers, which are environment specific. We use Apache Storm as the canonical distributed stream processing platform for designing our MTD strategies, and offer a preliminary evaluation that indicates the feasibility and evaluates the performance overheads.

This paper presents a well-structured, mixed-criticality, system that exhibits rich spatio-temporal behaviors that arise from the interactions of mobile conveying units. The system-level objective is for the collection of decentralized, autonomous, mobile units to transport entities from some input port to an output port when each entity has its own destination, deadline and Quality of service constraints. Entities move by riding on the mobile units and transfer from one unit to another when two units rendezvous. We propose a systematic approach to transform the spatio-temporal patterns of interactions to a graph from which we can obtain the shortest paths that can help to address the system objective. In the future, such systems can be used to investigate a variety of intelligent, embedded, mechatronic systems issues. This system can also be integrated with other models for processes and systems to investigate some of the challenges envisaged in Industry 4.0.

Autonomous adaptation in self-adapting embedded real-time systems introduces novel risks as it may lead to unforeseen system behavior. An anomaly detection framework integrated in a real-time operating system can ease the identification of such suspicious novel behavior and, thereby, offers the potential to enhance the reliability of the considered self-x system. However, anomaly detection is based on knowledge about normal behavior. When dealing with self-reconfiguring applications, normal behavior changes so that the knowledge base requires adaptation or even (re-)construction at runtime. The stringent restrictions of real-time systems in terms of runtime and memory consumption assign this task to be a really challenging problem. In this paper, we present our idea for online construction of application behavior knowledge that does not rely on any training phase. The applications' behavior is defined by the application's system call invocations. For the knowledge base, we exploit Suffix Trees as they offer potentials to represent application behavior patterns and their associated information in a compact manner. We apply the online algorithm provided by Suffix Trees as a basis to construct the knowledge base with low computational effort. However, we integrate anomaly detection and classification into the online construction method. We ensure thereby that new behavioral patterns do not unconditionally update the behavior knowledge base, but beforehand, have been evaluated in a context-related manner inspired by Danger Theory, a special discipline of Artificial Immune Systems.

component-based infrastructures provide support for the development and execution of component-based si,stems. However they have limitations in their application in real-time and reliable systems, because they do not integrate facilities to support these types of problems and include limitations of predictability and dependability. These infrastructures are designed to provide support to financial and e-commerce applications;they integrate as basic services the transaction, persistence, security and events. These are useful services in real-time and telecom applications, but these applications require other types of services to provide predictability and reliability. Me introduce some practical solutions to integrate OoS (Quality of service) services in the component infrastructures and the results that their business components can expect.

Although distributed real-time (RT) systems are intrinsically complex to develop and maintain, the use of certain object-oriented (OO) technologies such as CORBA and CORBA-RT facilitates those tasks. This is the main reason why these technologies are becoming increasingly popular. Moreover, CORBA is complemented with additional services that solve specific requirements for some applications, so developers may concentrate on the application functionality. Following this approach, this paper presents a new service that allows the synchronous scheduling of different activities in a distributed RT system in a simple and flexible way. This paper also explains how this service can be used for optimizing that access to shared resources in a distributed system and presents several experimental data that show the service performance.

The vision of the 'Smart Grid' assumes a distributed real-time embedded system that implements various monitoring and control functions. As the reliability of the power grid is critical to modern society, the software supporting the grid must support fault tolerance and resilience in the resulting cyber-physical system. This paper describes the fault-tolerance features of a software framework called Resilient Information Architecture Platform for Smart Grid (RIAPS). The framework supports various mechanisms for fault detection and mitigation and works in concert with the applications that implement the grid-specific functions. The paper discusses the design philosophy for and the implementation of the fault tolerance features and presents an application example to show how it can be used to build highly resilient systems.

component-based programming models are well-suited to the design of large-scale, distributed applications because of the ease with which distributed functionality can be developed, deployed, and validated using the models' compositional properties. Existing component models supported by standardized technologies, such as the OMG's CORBA component Model (CCM), however, incur a number of limitations in the context of cyber physical systems (CPS) that operate in highly dynamic, resource-constrained, and uncertain environments, such as space environments, yet require multiple quality of service (QoS) assurances, such as timeliness, reliability, and security. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents the design of a novel component model called F6COM that is developed for applications operating in the context of a cluster of fractionated spacecraft. Although F6COM leverages the compositional capabilities and port abstractions of existing component models, it provides several new features. Specifically, F6COM abstracts the component operations as tasks, which are scheduled sequentially based on a specified scheduling policy. The infrastructure ensures that at any time at most one task of a component can be active -eliminating race conditions and deadlocks without requiring complicated and error-prone synchronization logic to be written by the component developer. These tasks can be initiated due to (a) interactions with other components, (b) expiration of timers, both sporadic and periodic, and (c) interactions with input/output devices. Interactions with other components are facilitated by ports. To ensure secure information flows, every port of an F6COM component is associated with a security label such that all interactions are executed within a security context. Thus, all component interactions can be subjected to Mandatory Access Control checks by a Trusted computing Base that facilitates the interactions.
