EarlGray is a component-based Java virtual machine (JVM) that can be configured to satisfy various kinds of requirements for building future information appliances and embedded systems. While the modification and extension on an existing JVM tend to be done in an ad-hoc manner, EarlGray allows developers to customize the JVM in a systematic manner by decomposing it into components and the explicit descriptions of the relationship between the components. We also examine three case studies on the customization of the EarlGray: exchanging a scheduler, memory management, and class file verifier components. These case studies show the benefits and drawbacks of the current component-based technologies.

The component/container paradigm helps to reduce the complexity and enhance the scalability of software development for plain desktop or enterprise systems. However, the frameworks enabling this approach are often not suitable for systems with limited processing power and memory sizes, and are not dedicated to real-time requirements. As part of the European IST project COMPARE, we study a possible projection from a high-level component model (CORBA component model) towards a low-level RT/E platform (OSEK). Preliminary results from this study are accounted in this paper. In the first part, the main features of CCM and OSEK are examined. Then we propose execution and communication models using an API for OSEK that is as similar as possible to that in the CCM framework.

Java's popularity, facilities and platform independence have made it an interesting language for the real time community. The RTSJ (real-time specification for Java) is a Java extension to allow the development of real-time systems. RTSJ does not supply any support for the development of real-time distributed systems. The goal of this work is to define support for this type of systems, based on RMI (remote method invocation). However, the high diversity of real-time systems implies that there is not a single RT-RMI definition that satisfies their requirements. This article presents the basics of two real-time RMI approaches: safety critical RMI, to support hard real-time and high integrity requirements, and quality of service RMI for soft real-time systems, which is based on resource reservation to provide some minimal required quality.

Dynamic software reconfiguration is a useful tool to adapt and maintain software systems. In most approaches, the system has to be stopped while the reconfiguration is in progress. This is not suitable for real-time systems, even on small-embedded systems. Timing constraints must be met even while the system is reconfiguring. Our approach is based on the real-time middleware OSA+. Our main objective is to be able to reconfigure services during run-time, with a predictable and predefined blackout time (the time the systems does not react due to the reconfiguration). Three different approaches concerning the blocking or non-blocking state of a service are presented. These approaches can be used to realize a tradeoff between the reconfiguration time and the blackout time.

Multimedia objects are distributed on peer computers (peers) in peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay networks. An application has to find target peers which can support enough quality of service (QoS) of multimedia objects. We discuss types of acquaintance relations of peers with respect to what objects each peer holds, can manipulate, and can grant access rights. We discuss a new type of flooding algorithm to find target peers based on charge and acquaintance concepts so that areas in networks where target peers are expected to exist are more deeply searched. We evaluate the charge-based flooding algorithm compared with a TTL-based flooding algorithm in terms of the number of messages transmitted in networks.

distributed real-time embedded systems (DRE) increasingly rely on COTS middleware to meet their distribution needs. Yet, there is a technology gap between the design of COTS middleware and the high-integrity constraints of real-time engineering. This puts a limit on the adoption of middleware by system families such as space or avionics. In this paper, we present our current work on the "schizophrenic middleware architecture", a highly tailorable middleware architecture, and its implementation PolyORB. We illustrate how it allows for support of real-time engineering guidelines, enforces determinism, allows for modeling and verification.

These recent years, a lot of real-time applications are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their data needs, resulting in a greater demand for real-time data services. real-time database systems (RTDBS) can manage these applications, but the workload in these systems is unpredictable, then RTDBS may become overloaded. A lot of work dealing with quality of service (QoS) has been done to control the transient overshoot. They are based on feedback control real-time scheduling theory. In this paper, we propose a work which allows to execute transactions before their deadlines while using the fresh data. We have extended the feedback-based miss ratio control, by using a multi versions data architecture to guarantee a set of requirements on the behavior of RTDBS and we have considered two data management policies. In the first policy, we have limited the maximum number of data versions and this number is the same for all the data items. In the second policy, the number is dynamically adjusted for each data item.

service-orientation has been proposed as a way of facilitating the development and integration of increasingly complex and heterogeneous system components. However, there are many new challenges to the dependability community in this new paradigm, such as how individual channels within fault-tolerant systems may invoke common services as part of their workflow, thus increasing the potential for common-mode failure. We propose a scheme that - for the first time - links the technique of provenance with that of multi-version fault tolerance. We implement a large test system and perform experiments with a single-version system, a traditional MVD system, and a provenance-aware MVD system, and compare their results. We show that for this experiment, our provenance-aware scheme results in a much more dependable system than either of the other systems tested, whilst imposing a negligible timing overhead.

Adaptation to changing environmental conditions is a major challenge for most distributed applications. The service-oriented programming paradigm leads to an increasing number of applications that are not only meant to provide services through standard user-interfaces hosted on desktop computers, but are to be accessible from small mobile devices as well. The integration of the different programming environments on desktop (i.e.; Windows) and mobile computers (i.e.; Java Micro Editions - J2ME) puts an extra burden on the programmer of this kind of applications. In addition, unstable conditions caused by modern infrastructures for mobile applications and varying properties of computational devices have to be considered during runtime of the application. Dynamic reconfiguration provides a powerful mechanism for adaptive computing. Within this paper, we elaborate on the extension of our previously developed *** framework towards CORBA and Java. With the introduction of new connector types, our framework is able to provide seamless support for adaptive, heterogeneous applications based on .Net, Java, and CORBA. In context of our framework, applications consist of components which interact via so-called connectors. The component/connector model allows for mediating between component frameworks (Java, .Net) as well as between communication protocols (CORBA, .Net Remoting, sockets, etc.). Within the paper we give an overview of our adaptation framework ***, that includes a monitoring infrastructure, a reconfiguration platform and tools for building adaptive applications. Using a proof-of-concept application, we experimentally evaluate our connector architecture and study interoperability of Java, CORBA, and .Net objects.

This paper defines a precise conceptual model of a software platform and the relationship that exists between platforms and software applications that use them. One of the key features of this model is that it allows formal verification of deployment specifications. The paper also describes how the proposed conceptual model can be represented directly using some of the new modeling features of the industry-standard UML 2.0 language. Finally, we briefly describe how this model can be used to support platform-independent design while still accounting for the potentially fundamental impact that platform characteristics can have on key design decisions.
