Many critical application systems require reconfigurability in order to adapt under changing environment. To achieve system reconfigurability, it is possible to use adaptation mechanisms that are external to components or to use parameterized components. This paper focuses on making components reconfigurable in terms of QoS tradeoffs. We propose a new component parameterization technique which can transform individual components to reconfigurable ones such that they can support various QoS tradeoffs to achieve overall system QoS requirements. The parameterized components can be used to develop both statically and dynamically reconfigurable systems. The proposed technique is rule based, which provides flexibility and extensibility to enhance and improve the technique. A tool set has been developed based on the proposed technique to achieve semi-automated component parameterization.

Ad hoc wireless sensor networks have the potential to become a major component of the Information Technology space. Due to the characteristics of sensor devices links and communications. The existing protocols for the traditional ad hoc networks affect the performance of the system in wireless sensor network. In this paper, multipath disjoint (MPD) routing algorithm is proposed. We compare MPD with two on-demand protocols, DSR and AODV. The simulation results show that MPD improves the packet delivery ratio, saves power and reduces the end-to-end delay. As a result, MPD releases the network congestion quite well. The system does not bring paralysis because of the routing breakdown.

Web services emerge as a new paradigm for distributed computing. Model checking is an important verification method to ensure the trustworthiness of composite WS. Boolean abstraction and counterexample driven refinement are major techniques for model checking software and WS. In most of the literature, the refinement is governed by the precision of the abstraction. In this paper, we present an innovative technique to distribute the precision information among proof slices, which can be selectively reused by future proofs and hence improve the performance by reducing excessive invocations of theorem provers. Moreover, the reuse approach is flexible for virtually arbitrary future extension. Our theoretical framework subsumes several existing abstraction-based model checking techniques, e.g., lazy abstraction. Besides the correctness and termination proofs, we also conducted theoretical analysis on the performance of the proof slicing algorithm.

service-oriented systems are distributed systems which have the major advantage of enabling rapid composition of distributed applications, regardless of the programming languages and platforms used in developing and running different components of the applications. In these systems, various capabilities are provided by different organizations as services interconnected by various types of networks. The services can be integrated following a specific workflow to achieve a mission goal for users. For large-scale service-based systems involving multiple organizations, high confidence and adaptability are of prime concern in order to ensure that users can use these systems anywhere, anytime with various devices, knowing that their confidentiality and privacy are well protected and the systems will adapt to satisfy their needs in various situations. Hence, these systems must be adaptable, situation-aware and secure. In this paper, an approach to rapid development of adaptable situation-aware secure service-based (AS/sup 3/) systems is presented. Our approach enables users to rapidly generate, discover, compose services into processes to achieve their goals based on the situation and adapt these processes when situation changes.

real-time CORBA is a middleware standard that has demonstrated successes in developing distributed, realtime, and embedded (DRE) systems. Customizing real-time CORBA for an application can considerably reduce the size of the middleware and improve its performance. However, customizing middleware is an error-prone task and requires deep knowledge of the CORBA standard as well as the middleware design. This paper presents ZEN-kit, a graphical tool for customizing RTZen (an RTSJ-based implementation of real-time CORBA). This customization is achieved through modularizing the middleware so that features may be inserted or removed based on the DRE application requirements. This paper presents three main contributions: 1) it describes how real-time CORBA features can be modularized and configured in RTZen using components and aspects, 2) it provides a configuration strategy to customize real-time middleware to achieve low-footprint ORBs, and 3) it presents ZEN-kit, a graphical tool for composing customized real-time middleware.

A flight-tested product line open system software architecture developed under the Boeing Bold Stroke initiative has been previously described and presented (DC. Sharp, 2001). This architecture enables a reusable component-based development process for avionics systems to achieve product goals of improved affordability, quality, and system timeliness. For large-scale systems, one very challenging portion of this process is the integration of common and project specific software components into systems that respect cross-cutting embedded system requirements such as hard and soft real-time deadlines, fault tolerance, and distribution. Significant advances in current approaches would result from an integrated approach to explicit modeling of functional behaviors and coupled physical embedded system properties, analysis of these models to ensure that they meet requirements prior to coding, and automated component configuration code generation. How these challenges, requirements and end-state visions for avionics systems are being developed within the DARPA Model-Based Integration of Embedded Software (MoBIES) program has also been previously described and presented (W. Roll, 2002). This presentation expand on those initial experiment descriptions by delineating the experimental process that was used, by providing examples of the MoBIES-enabled development process in practice, the role of domain-specific models, and by presenting initial qualitative and quantitative results.

Location based services are becoming essential feature of context-awareness in ubiquitous computing. Reflective distribute component programming model is proposed to systematically provide location to location based services (LBS). We integrate distributed component technology and reflection to develop localization capability as middleware service. Concept of meta object protocols (Reflection) is used in different way than traditional reflective mechanisms. It deals with the state of the component that is not inside the component rather resides outside of it, namely extrinsic. This component model provides the basis for middleware architecture to support location providing service at design, implementation and run time. We describe the methodology we used to build location-awareness as middleware service based upon our reflective component model.

A DVE system provides a computer-generated virtual world where individuals located at different places could interact with each other. In this paper, we present the design of a grid-enabled service oriented framework for facilitating the building of DVE systems on Grid. A service component named "gamelet" is proposed. Each gamelet is characterized by its load awareness, high mobility, and embedded synchronization. Based on gamelet, we show how to re-design the existing monopolistic model of a DVE system into an open and service-oriented system that can fit into current Grid/OGSA framework. We also demonstrate an adaptive gamelet load-balancing (AGL) algorithm that helps the DVE system achieve better performance. We evaluate the performance through a multiplayer online game prototype implemented on Globus Toolkit. Results show that our approach can achieve faster response time and higher throughput. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Process-control systems usually deal with changeable environments so that high adaptability of these systems is required. After a process-control system has been implemented and deployed, it is not an easy task to adapt the system to satisfy new requirements. Considering this problem, we propose the use of relational program architectures to design process-control systems for high adaptability. With the relational program architecture, a process-control system is designed to be the composition of several Independently Developable End-user Assessable Logical (IDEAL) components through pre-defined composition patterns. Each IDEAL component is associated with several end-user visible properties and can be solved and validated in its restricted "view" of the system, i.e., it can be designed and implemented independently, and can be tested or verified by the end-user independently. In addition, the system level properties (safety, stability, and reliability) can be inferred from the individual IDEAL components mathematically. The relational program architecture can provide not only the ultra-high dependability assurance of a process-control system, but can also make the system highly adaptable. We propose several principles, by which we can accurately determine which components of the system need to be adapted and how to adapt them after the system's requirement has changed. These principles can be evolved to automated tool support.
