The paper deals with providing a specification methodology to enable flexible monitoring in large scale distributed information systems (DIS). The goal is to allow the monitoring of compliance to properties deemed as critical for functioning of a DIS. Since information attacks due to external intrusion and/or component failures often manifest as deviations from critical behaviors expected of a DIS, a violation of compliance to a specified critical property can be viewed as symptomatic of information attacks. Based on this principle, users can prescribe critical properties in the form of event predicates, which are Boolean conditions on the externally visible interface state distributed among computation nodes and can be detected by distributed algorithms. Our specification methodology manifests in two facets: i) designing a meta-language which allows the interface behavior of a system to be prescribed through possible occurrences of events in the external environment; and ii) incorporating the specification language into a programming interface that exposes the computation-level states symbolizing the occurrence of events. Any target application can then plugged-in to the generic monitor tool to test for its compliance to critical functionality requirements. The realization of monitor in distributed object-oriented programming languages (such as JAVA) reduces the software development costs of implementing a DIS: due to the ease of specification, development and maintenance of the DIS.

The scheduling paradigm offers an alternative execution model for services and applications, which is of particular interest for the enterprise domain. Therefore, task scheduling is considered as an integral part of many contemporary information systems and service platforms. In this paper we present, the architectural aspects of an integrated scheduling framework, targeted to the mobile applications market along with an implementation prototype, which was also developed with the purpose of demonstrating its capabilities and identifying its limitations.

This paper presents a framework for generic modeling of distributed embedded applications. An application is decomposed into services and mapped on a set of distributed nodes, whereas each node hosts one or more services. Each service is described by four interfaces: a real-time input/output, a configuration and planning (CP), and a diagnostic and management (DM) interface. The overall application is described by a cluster configuration description that specifies the interaction of services within and across nodes. The application requirements, the service properties of a node, and the interaction of the services as well as the application mapping are described formally with XML descriptions. The XML format allows a language-neutral and extensible semantic description of interfaces supporting the implementation of context-aware tools for modeling, scheduling, monitoring, simulation, and validation. A central concept of the model is the interface file system (IFS) that acts as a distributed shared memory and transparently implements the interfaces to services from other nodes. In principle, the communication system that updates the data in the IFS data is not bound to a specific implementation as long as it fulfills the given timing requirements. The presented concepts are applied in a case study that uses the time-triggered fieldbus protocol TTP/A for the implementation of a small sensor fusion application.

In this paper we propose and evaluate a methodology for run-time fast software component migration for application survivability in distributed real-time systems. For fast migration we focus on the two dominant factors;lightweight migration and proactive resource discovery. The former is to minimize the absolute amount of time required for migration and the latter is to provide a destination host information at the time of migration decision. The run-time software component is implemented as Java object whose class is defined by extending the unicast remote server class. The proactive resource discovery consists of Community protocol and associated algorithms. These two ideas have been implemented as a middleware that also provides a real-time job scheduler in JVM (Java Virtual Machine), and a naming server. Our analysis and simulation in a cluster computing environment show that the proactive resource discovery requires very low communication overhead while maintaining high effectiveness in finding available CPU resources. Our implementation and measurement show that run-time component migration based on our approach takes much less time compared to the approach based on reactive resource discovery.

When trying to find solutions in a problem domain it is a rational step to first explore the limits of the design space. If, during such an endeavor, an impossibility result is encountered, then the further search space can be selectively seeped for solutions to avoid dead-end avenues. With such a perspective, it is the objective of this contribution to outline and discuss the limits of the precise specification of component interfaces in component-based computing systems. Our interest lies in ascertaining limits covers issues of functional composition and verification. Equally importantly, we provide a rationale behind the causes of the limits and impossibility conditions. We define a component as a self-contained subsystem, including software and hardware that provides a specified service across identified interfaces to its users. Without loss of any generality, we assume that all interfaces are message based [1]. According to [2] it is reasonable to distinguish between the following interface types of a component: The service providing linking interfaces (SPLIF, or LIF for short): this interface provides the services of the components to its users. According to Parnas [3] p.330: The specification must provide to the intended user all the information that he will need to use the program (component) correctly and nothing more. For example, a simple smart transducer component for temperature monitoring delivers at its LIF periodically a message containing the measured temperature and nothing more. The service requesting linking interfaces (SRLIF): This interface is used by the component under consideration to request services from other components or the environment in order to accomplish the stated mission at the components LIF. In order to support the principle of information hiding[3], a user of the LIF should not be aware of the existence of the SRLIF. The Experimentation Command and Control Interface (XC21) project has developed an architecture for a Web-service based viewer/controller for use with distributed simulations supporting military experiments. As part of this activity, a capability for Interest Management with three functions is being created. The functions are Role Based Access Control (RBAC), Area of Interest Management (AOIM), and Aggregation Interest Management (AGIM). While the approach is compatible with High Level Architecture (HLA) for Modeling and Simulation, primary information exchange takes place using the Web services, i.e. software-to-software messaging interfaces that operate over Web protocols such as XML/SOAP. This paper presents a Web services Internet Management (WSIM) architecture designed to achieve these capabilities in a way that is compatible with simulations using the HLA. The protocols and information flow structure are described, along with the architecture's design rationale, interest management rules, and plans for its implementation. The paper concludes with a description of potential for future development of WSIM, including adoption of the Command and Control Information Exchange Data Model (C21EDM) and use of Overlay Multicast for data distribution.

Traditionally, real-time requirements are expressed by means of deadlines, which are imposed by the environment on the system. This approach, however, is not well suited for expressing real-time requirements on the interaction between objects; such as found in distributed systems supporting autonomy of objects. This paper presents a coherent framework in which real-time requirements for such interacting objects can be expressed. Two interrelated system layers are considered together: the communication layer and the distributed programming layer that describes how interactions between the objects are organized. In particular, the paper evaluates the relationship between real-time requirements and real-time activities in distributed object-oriented systems

Multimedia objects distributed in networks are concurrently manipulated by multiple transactions in applications like co-authoring systems and distributed gaming systems. Not only state but also quality of service (QoS) of object are changed through methods. We define new types of conflicting and exclusive relations on methods to serialize transactions and to realize exclusive manipulation of an object by taking into account QoS change in addition to state change. We discuss a locking protocol for realizing mutual exclusion on objects and a scheduler for serializing transactions with respect to the QoS-based conflicting and exclusive relations
